What you are talking about is an incredibly small minority of dangerously deluded recluses. This is not some trend or fad, it's a condition... stemming from extreme self-esteem issues.
To each their own, is what I subscribe to, but some of these people are extremely vulnerable and potentially traumatised from poor social experiences. When you have withdrawn so far from society and general social interaction, to the point your only area of comparison is animated fantasy, delusions become a real possibility.
Persecuting them does nothing other then making you feel better cause you can claim to be more normal in comparison. Considering the types who visit these forums, I'd say that's massively hypocritical.
Simply put, these people don't willingly subscribe to this line of thought, they withdraw there in self-defence. Putting up barriers against them, no matter how bizarre or outright offensive their opinions are, only inflates the issue.
