It's a decent campy 80's action movie. But there were way better sci-fi films in the 80s. It hasn't aged too well. Top 100 maybe.
Outta here.

The best sci-fi movie of all time was Iron Sky.
You'll get my thumbs up for that one.

The Terminator and Alien are my favorite but Robocop would be a good third. It's more a clever satire I think disguised as a great sci-fi action movie. All the things the movie made a mockery about are probably even more relevant today(corporate control, public deception, rogue technology etc.)

I also really enjoyed Robocop 2(replaced Verhoeven's satire with Frank Miller's 'Hardboiled' style) but the third one was pretty crap.

It's not the best sci-fi movie ever, but RC is still a great action/satire movie. Robocop 1 is one of my personal favorites, because it takes place in my hometown. Also, it was as close as you could get a Judge Dredd movie back then. In fact, originally it was supposed to be a Dredd movie, but they could not secure the rights so they based Murphy off of Dredd. Eventually we got a proper Dredd movie in 2011, which ironically enough, was a better Robocop remake than the actual PG-13 remake.

I wouldn't call it the best sci-fi movie, but it's up there with all the "cult classics" and i can see how it can be the favorite one for some. Might be the best of Verhoeven's too.

Hyperbolic as in "you can't just claim a movie is the best ever" or for some other reason?
Odd that you say this after you said this to another poster -

You live up to your name.
Seems a bit...hypocritical to me. But maybe that's the point?

I dunno. Opinions are a dime a dozen, and I'd buy mine for a dollar.

The first one was an honest question, believe it or not. Though I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Most people in the thread just say they like RoboCop, but that it's not the best. Nature Guardian called out the hyperbolic nature of the thread, and so I wanted to ask if his comment was more about this thread or the movie in question.

Small nitpick, it wasn't his first day as a cop. Previously he had worked in a much more peaceful area, and then he was transferred to a much more dangerous one. THAT is why he died.

I'll agree with most people that it's a good movie. Out of Verhoeven's movies, though? Starship Troopers just feels better.

I was actually trying to be cheeky but accidentally posted the first time before finishing.

Go back to my original comment and you'll see what I mean. :p

I grew up with the original and loved it back in the day - but I actually prefer the newer remake. Yeah, go ahead and hate me.

Fifth Element is the best.
I don't understand why that movie is hated by some people. Great action, great comedy, great editing and cuts away to other characters during the scenes. One of my favorites.

I call it the Jar Jar Bings effect: when the annoying comic relief overstays their welcome. Personally I don't mind the movie; I'm kinda into the tongue-in-cheek humor.

Good? Sure, but best? Not really.

Verhoven was best taken with a grain of salt as he tended toward cutting satire with a slightly deeper meaning. In this case as with many of his flicks the emphasis was on over the top violence which clashed with any deeper meaning you might pull from the corpse of the script. looks like shit compared to more modern films.

The Terminator was not unlike Robocop in tone but in my opinion just a better view and less unpleasant to watch. Alien and Aliens also in the same vein, but gave us that nice "used sci fi future" we are more used to seeing. they hold up great even today. They also gave some good social commentary without beating us half to death with it. A perennial sin of Verhoven's.

2001 a Space Odyssey is a classic for good reason. But at teh end of the day it was just piggy backing on the whole "evil AI " story that we have been beaten half to death with.

My vote however goes to Gattica. It does what good sci fi should do. Asks an interesting question, builds a great story around it, gives us a warning if we are not careful about how we answer it in the future and most importantly,we are going straight down the path that that movie lays out for us. It does the whole thing without showing us a gore fest, which frankly I think is Verhoven's way of being condescending to us. It's like he thinks that we won't pay attention without an excess of blood and guts or some shit. it does not hurt at all that the acting in it was pretty fucking fantastic.
