Hopefully this is faithful to robocop in the best way. I wouldn't watch an average action movie, but I'd definitely watch this movie if it had all the cheesy satire from the original.

Without the visor Robocop just looks like a rip off of Iron Man and when they go for the black armor he looks like some sort of Batman rip off. The only cool thing would be if they put out some sort of ED-209 toy that doesn't cost a load of money. Might watch it one slow weekend on Netflix but if they can't come up with something more compelling I can't say "I'd buy that for a dollar".
For me the visor was the key piece of costume that made the RoboCop look like a heartless robot. When he removes it, it acts as a very powerful symbol of the fact that there really is a human being behind it.

For me the main theme of the movie was that even with all the technology grafted onto him, RoboCop is still Officer Alex Murphy. He knows what is right and what is wrong and you cannot reprogram him to feel otherwise. As we get to know the cyborg better throughout the movie we slowly realize all of this and it sends a powerful message. If the new movie skips all that and starts of as portraying RoboCop as human right away, it will lose a lot of the emotional impact.

I prefer the tone of older movies so I'll probably prefer the original, but I enjoy seeing Detroit in movies so I'll go see it anyways. I really hope Detroit can become a movie-town to improve the economy, though I'd really love to see a post-apocalypse movie take advantage of the ruined buildings there.
Was the new one actually filmed in Detroit? I hadn't heard that. The original was filmed in Dallas, Texas within a few hours drive of me.

The original was brilliant and is still one of my favorite movies of all time. That said this new one certainly looks better than I was expecting. Robo looks better in action than in the still shots from the set, even in the silly black armor. I was afraid they were going to turn him into a full on ninja rather than the walking tank that the original was. Looks like they found something closer to a middle ground. And ED-209 looks amazing!

My only question is still who was particularly clamoring for a Robocop remake?

Well I recognized a few places from the trailer so I assumed part of it at least was.
