Holy shit that is awesome. I'm going to need some cash to drop the $140 or so it'll cost for the guitar, but I think it'll better me at the instrument anyway.

Well $150 for the button one. No price on the actual guitar with sensors in it...

I say no. There are too many music games, they should just release new songs as expansions. That keyboard looks crazy though, I must admit.

I don't get some of the comments though. The strings and such are optional; it won't affect the game as is unless you wish it to. For people whose first guitar they ever picked up was a plastic one with buttons, the transition changes could be exciting. It's giving extra while taking nothing away. Why would this be bad?

About the limitations of songs...there's like over a bloody thousand out there to download right now, with more coming out all the time. I sincerely doubt you can't put together lists of the kind of music you enjoy. Again, I don't see why adding extra necessarily means detracting from what exists in some people's minds.

And people play these kinds of games for the same reasons we play any other kinds of games: they're fun. I'd never be caught dead playing the multitude of generic brown space marine shooters out there, but many people do because they're fun to them. And so more power to them. The up-turned nose fervour some people have towards Rock Band and the like has always confused me. It's on the same level as console fanboyism to me. "My toy is good and yours is stupid!" Childish.

Why play COD, go join the army.
Why play Skate 3, go get a real skate board.
Why play Assassins Creed, go assassinate real people.
Why play Rock band, go join a real band.
Why play Final Fantasy, form a group of friends and defeat an entity that you see as evil.
Why play Peggle, go play real Pinball.
Why play Blur, go race people for real.

You see how foolish it sounds grouped in with all those others?

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are a lot closer to playing Guitar then CoD is to joining the Army, this is why people rage against it. If it was a game with an abstract concept just using a controler then I wager it wouldn't attact any negitive attention. Playing music is also a lot more accessable then going to war or assassination, another reason for all the rage. But really, we all know that it's silly; the only thing Guitar Hero has is common with playing guitar is.. well.. nothing. They are totally different, but they are close enough for people to ***** about.

This "Rock Band Pro" however, is crossing into the world of actually playing guitar, and in that case the rage is valid. Seriously, if you want to learn guitar just learn guitar.

Harmonix has said many times they want people to learn instruments, and part of the reason for this is to drive people to learn more and possible even learn to play an instrument.

It 100% invalidates that argument.

There are "Pro Guitars" one with a matrix consisting of 102 buttons and 6 strings to strum, and one that is a actual Guitar with Sensors in the Frets and near the base of the strings to tell when its been strummed, it can tell where you are placing your hands on the guitar. The game in Pro mode then has 6 lanes, and notes come down with a number on them, depending on the lane they're in and the number that tells you what button to press or where to play on the guitar.

Maybe this is just me, but I'm really turned-off by this idea of trying to make the little plastic guitars more "realistic" - I, more than anybody, hate it when people bring up the old "go play real guitar, noob" adage, but seriously.... I play Rock Band because I enjoy pressing plastic buttons and rocking out to songs that would otherwise take me months to learn. But this notion of introducing stringed plastic guitars just sounds so profoundly..... stupid.

No, I think most people feel that way, too. I certainly do, as it seems to kill the entire point of the game. I get where they're going with it, but it seems kind of dumb.

Also, I'm probably the only one who's gonna care about this, but why the hell did they pick Dead End Friends as the Them Crooked Vultures song to put in the game? I mean, it's a good song and all, but with this new keyboard innovation, it seems like the obvious choice would've been Scumbag Blues, or maybe Elephants just for the unprecedented epicness. Dead End Friends, while a catchy song, is repetitive and simple one to play. Again, I realize I'm more likely than not the only person to care about this, but still...

I guess I am saying, if someone actually has got interest in playing guitar/drums/keyboard, then spend the money on actually doing that, not fannying about in front of a TV

With just the normal button guitar fair enough I see the "game" element in that it's still removed enough from the actual thing so, that's fair enough.
But if you're gonna go buy the kit with actual strings on it... then really, just go buy a real one and learn that, go to jam sessions in your town, have fun with some real people, make a real band maybe. It just doesn't compute to me.

I own a real bass, and it certainly won't stop me from enjoying it, but honestly I'm more excited for the Pro mode than I have been for a music game, or game in general in a long time.

And who knows, what I think, and I think Harmonix thinks this too, is that it will drive people to actually do those sorts of things. I mean, heavens, the pro controller actually does plug into an amp and work as a guitar.

Honestly, I think this will be the best training tool yet to learn how to play your favorite songs on guitar. I know that's what I'll be using it for.
