I'd have to say your an idiot...

The Wii is revolutionary - it has the best controls (in terms of movement) out of all current systems, and is designed for more casual players to enjoy - that doesn't make it last-gen - especially when Sony tried and failed to copy their idea with Six-Axis's.
I play on the Xbox 360 console, though also own a Wii. PS3's Six-Axis doesn't work very well, and neither does Wii motion detection. You play a game and it takes something like 1 second to recognise you've swung the Wii remote in a random fashion before it realises you're trying to do something. Sometimes you'll be jabbing the Wii remote forwards in Wii Boxing and other similar games, and your avatar will swing his arm right round to the right in a massive hook. It just doesnt work quite like you'd expect. Also, its not revolutionary if its not neccessary. They're trying to be the missing link between current-gen and virtual reality, but it just replaces the odd button press with a ussually irrelevant wrist rotation.

Now, the Wii IS last gen in every other way. Its graphics are last-gen, its processor is last-gen, to the point where products that were intended for it i.e. Dead Rising, were moved to another system (the Xbox 360) due to the fact that they couldnt fit many more than 10 zombies on-screen at the same time. So for these reasons and many more for which I don't care, the Wii is last-gen, trying to be something special in order to compete with current-gen without the large production costs.

The sales figures sure do support the Wii, because it is so appealing and 'cool' to little children. I have 2 younger brothers, and they saw an advert for Sonic Unleashed, and immediately assumed it would be a really good game. They bought it, played it for a day or two, and when they got frustrated with the poor gameplay they just went straight back to LEGO Star Wars. This is the kind of thing that makes the Wii sell so well. My brothers' most played game by far is Star Wars Battlefront 2 on the original Xbox, and this is because its got a 'cool' theme, as well as genuinely really good gameplay. And you know what? No random stick waggling, and the same graphics and AI, released 3 and a half years ago.

The fact that my fellow Escapists are on this forum makes me assume that they are fairly serious about gaming. How can an Escapist be seriously gaming on a console based on marketing poor games aimed at children? There are some genuinely good games on the Wii, like there were games I'd still enjoy on last-gen consoles. But anyway, I digress. The point of this rant was to make it clear to you that the Wii IS a heavily last-gen console. Kudos to Nintendo for the sales, but not to you for defending it in such an ill-informed way on a fairly serious gaming forum.

I beleive the appropriate qoute would be "Rock out with your block out"

Anyway I think this is Harmonix targeting a younger demographic and just going through the stages of stagnating it's franchise with side game after side games. think about Rock band:AC-DC, Track Packs, Rock band: Unplugged.

Another day another incredibly ignorant Wii-hater who thinks that graphics are the most important part of gameplay and that Nintendo are to blame for the lack of proper usage of motion controls. Twilight Princess may have appeared to some to be just 'stick waggling' but the fact is, if you can get into it its incredibly immersive to swing your arm in order to hack at that giant skeletal knight. Okami is another example, in this case motion control is certainly somewhat repetitive, but the fact is, when it comes to drawing symbols on a screen, I can't imagine how other consoles hope to compete with the IR pointer.
FPS games would go great on the Wii if someone would get off their arse and make them, its got a built in lightgun-esque controller for pete's sake.

Yes the motion control isn't perfect, its hardly as bad a you claim, but I can see where you're coming from. Hence the motion-plus thingie they're coming out with, assumedly this should make things better, not that they're in dire need of improvement in my opinion, but if it sways designers to make more games for the Wii then I'll happily buy it.

You don't seem to have grasped the actual point of my argument. No, I don't think graphics are the most important part of gameplay, hence how Star Wars Battlefront 2 was a really good game, as with many other, and how I said that there'd be -I quote- 'genuinely good games on the Wii, like there were games I'd still enjoy on last-gen consoles.'

Firstly, I don't want to draw symbols on a screen, I don't find it to constitute 'fun'.

Secondly, let's think about FPS's for a second. Online play. Not even going to detail the problem there. Okay so single player. Now, lets say we keep the crosshair central to the screen. Now, how do we turn move the crosshair? Do we use the motion sensor? Well no, because turning around 180 degrees with the Wii remote means the sensor no longer recognises it, and you're not looking at the screen, so does simply turning it a little left mean it continously turns to the left? You try aiming like skilled Xbox, Playstation and PC gamers when you're doing that, especially with how inaccurate the Wii motion sensor can be at times, like on the Wii main menu where it shakes everywhere.

So, do we use the nunchuk stick to aim? Well, no. It has that annoying hexagonal (or something similar) holster, making it awkward to aim exactly where you want. And if you were to do that how do you move, using the motion sensor? Okay no, so we use the D-Pad. Nice way to use the motion controls, might as well use a standard controller with two thumbsticks.

Okay, so maybe you could put the crosshair loose around the screen, like a rail-shooter but where you control the movement and screen rotation too. But that means: D-pad and nunchuk for moving and rotating the screen around, then the motion sensor for controlling where the crosshair is, but I for one think that will be both confusing, and still inaccurate. There's a reason FPS developers don't pick the worlds most purchased this-gen console.

Yeah, maybe this 'motion-plus thingie' I haven't heard of will make things better, but to be honest game developers for FPS's, which have the player very up-close and personal with the surrounding scenery, like to use the detail and graphics supplied by the other current-gen competitors. Imagine the lack of detail and load distance you would have trying to put a game as huge as the popular Fallout 3 on the Wii console. The little things that really give atmosphere like the dynamic lighting, the little detailed bullet holes in walls that mean there has been violence where you are stood. The realistic blood stain leading to a closed door that makes you apprehensive to open it. Let's face it, Goldeneye was good in it's day, but if introduced to both it and COD4 at the same time today, there's no question which would be far superior in my mind. This is why good graphics and animation make a game better.

For some reason Lego games do very well. I actually enjoy them a bit, plus: IT HAS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN! IT CANNOT FAIL!

Nah. That's not gimmicky enough. The touch screen's been done. More mic usage is the only way to keep the gimmicks flowing.
