Ronaldo quits (not the young metrosexual one).

Ronaldo held a press conference where he told the press that he's quitting. I think it's about time, but I also feel kind of sad.

Ronaldo is easily one of the biggest footballers of all time. He was a favourite of mine in the 90s along Kluivert, Baggio and the like. Probably the most well rounded strikers of all time (could play both quick and strong roles, head the ball great technique, lethal finishing).

So anyone care? Are there football fans on this site at all? Was he the best the 90's had to offer?

PS: He also said that he had a disease that slowed his metabolism, which is why he was so heavy. He would have had to get it treated with hormones, bur couldn't because that's considered doping in football. Eh...always thought all brazilian fottball players get fat naturally, makes me feel kind of bad for making fun of him in retrospect.

AH well, even when fat he was still world class.

The original Ronaldo? #9 from Brazil's WC94 squad? Isn't he older than Brett Favre?

He's old. In terms of football that is. It's the normal quitting age. Also, that disease (tyroid problems) doesn't suddenly turn up, as far as I know. So that's not the main issue I think.

Overall, I don't really care since I never liked the guy. He was a decent (fine, good) football player, but there are others that I like more.

He was scary before the weight gain. Extremely fast, and refused to be knocked down, he could really ride a tackle...you don't see too much of that.

I guess it's sad that his career is over, but his move to Brazil was the end to me. There was no hearing of him after that.

see ya later Ronaldo, thanks for the memories. saying that he was just a good striker is an understatement, that man could destroy teams. An absolute pleasure to watch that man play.

Top quality player in his day, I hope things go well for despite him having one of the siliiest hair cuts ever! You know the one...

People still say 'metrosexual'? Really? I thought we'd got over that.

Ronaldo was an absolute joy to watch when he was at his peak. Even when he was on the decline, he could still teach damn near everyone a lesson. Great memories of watching him rip teams apart.

Well, he said he's had it all the way since his Milan days, but didn't want to make it public until now. I don't know how much of that I buy but he seems like an honest guy. Still feel bad for all the fat jokes I made over the years.

Who's Brett Favre? From an American sport I assume?

I think he never really played for Brazil in 94, but by the 98 WC he was already a star. Damn, Brazilian football players really blossom and decline quickly.

Well, he has two world cups and three POTY Awards, and he's only 34. So not a bad life in my eyes. Goodbye Ronaldo, you're name is now laughed at and made fun of.

He was the first football idol I ever had, and the last of the truly legendary strikers
he will be missed

One of the greatest forwards to ever play football. Sad to see him go, but it's time.

Brett Favre is an (American) Football player who's pretty much ancient in terms of any sport and constantly said he would retire, then decided to play even though it was clearly hurting his team for him wanting to trying and get one more ring (the loser).

Anyway, ronaldo... Ronaldo. Hmm... Sorry, I dont watch much Soccer, but I remember his name being as big as Beckham in the states and all the soccer playing kids hear saying they wanted to be like him.

the same way every hockey playing kid wanted to say he was gonna be like Gretzky (though being like Lemieux is clearly better).

That's what I love most about him. He played the good old football, where jumping over or riding a tackle was considered the norm. I mean, the way he got tackled was just absurd. Some of his best youtube moments have him shrugging off multiple red card like tackles in a row, often from behind as a sign of desperation from the outclassed defenders. Can't keep him down man. He was too honest and proud to fall down like a few wimps we have today. Class act.

Certainly one of them, at the international stage he was unrived, at club level I'd put Eric Cantona up there for contension though... the late 90's were the best time to watch football I reckons. Full of players of Ronaldo's calibre and mindset, nowadays you have... Well Christiano Ronaldo, whose face is probably the one I would derive the most satisfaction from punching repeatedly...

Ps, I don't even like football and I'm commenting on it. Shows just how much respect I have for the guy...
