I'm surprised no one has brought up the Templars from AC. They're by far the most well developed "order vs freedom" faction apart from deus ex's illuminati.

Neo Zeon in Zeta and Unicorn.
the space colonies are supposed to be independent of the EFSF.
on the other hand they wanted to destroy life on earth in CCA to push humans to evolve further although it,s a noble cause committing genocide isn't a ethical way to reach this.

All the time; usually, the villain is the only character in the whole story who has any kind of plan, and who has bothered to get their shit together and get something done with their life...

[sup]Besides, their motives are far more believable...[/sup]

Yeah, I'm suprised too, especially when you throw in the fact that almost every major victory for the Assassins ended with some form of catastrophe, for instance, China's complete stagnation for several centuries, ooh, and a Rise of Great Assassins in Europe ushered in an era of little to no technological progress, yep, that's right, the Assassin Order accidentily started the Dark Ages.

Whenever Angelus turned up in Buffy/Angel everyone else became meaningless. It was all about the psycho incarnate of vampire evilness. That dude was awesome.

Spike was also pretty interesting until his heel face turn as well.

David Xanatos from Gargoyles always had me rooting for him too, thouhg he usually won anyway so maybe he doesn't count here.

Did you ever root for the bad guys when you were watching/playing a movie/show/game. If so, why did you root for them? Personally I always went for the bad guys when I was a kid. I think it was because of just how powerful they were compared to the protagonist.
Killzone, no question.

The "Bad Guys" of the setting are the Helghast, who were ripped off by the Terrans, fought back, lost and were banished to the barely-inhabitable world of Helghast. Their former homeworld of Vekta was occupied, and when they try to reclaim it the 'Vektans' retaliate by invading Helghast. All of this makes the Helghast a tragic, downtrodden people who spend at least half the series fighting to defend their homeland, and the other half trying to retake their FORMER homeland.

By contrast, the "Good Guys", the ISA, are a bunch of gung-ho assholes who don't give two shits about all this history; Vekta is 'their' world because they say it is, and they'll happily shoot anyone who says otherwise. They spend the whole game spouting racist slurs and slapping each other's dicks together in celebration of how full of themselves they are.

I have no idea how ANYONE can sympathise with the ISA in Killzone.

I usually rooted for Tom, because Jerry was such a prick. Okay, in the cases Tom went out of his way to be a prick to Jerry (which weren't few, admittedly), I rooted for Jerry. But in general, Jerry was the bigger prick, so I, in general rooted for Tom.

See, black vs. white in fiction is simply about the lowest common denominator BS. People simply have too much of a hard time thinking about things and prefer the decisions on who has a "better" cause is made for them.

If the villain is a Magnificent Bastard, I'll often end up rooting for them and I get annoyed when they go and fuck with characterization completely in the end because "the hero had to win". Seriously, Anthony Hopkins in Fracture, Tom Cruise in Collateral...they only ended up losing because of a completely retarded ass pull, having their characters broken. Basically, the way their characters were maintained throughout the movie make it completely unbelievable they could have slipped on something like they slipped on.

I wanted the humans to win in Avatar, though that might just have been because Stephen Lang was the only interesting character in the whole movie.

That and I never like Harry Potter in the books or films. Found myself rooting for the people around him, or Snape usually. All of whom were far more competent and interesting characters. Instead of Harry who had the problem of having so-many-solvable-problems to brood and be angsty about.

I mean, hell, Bruce Wayne broods about his parents from time to time, but he also became The Goddamn Batman to deal with his issues. Harry just never stopped complaining about things until he needed to be stoic or useful.

Avatar - first thing I thought about, like the rest of the community it seems

V for Vendetta - I mean the world is obviously fucked and the government is making the best out of a bad situation, I just resent how they have to make them especially evil just so we can side with the psychotic anarchist. Also that guy blew up Westminster,so fuck that guy.

Rise of the planet of the apes - just no.

Patriot - Being a Briton I take offence to the propaganda bullshit spewed out from that film. Please if you're gonna make us evil, at least give us a top hat, cane and dastardly mustache.

bad guys are cooler (unless they're doing evil because they're evil because... uhm... well...) than these goody two shoes

*thinking*
although... there are some pretty cool good guys, too (Sledge Hammer and his beloved revolver for example :D )
... i guess i root for the cool guys, i don't mind if they happen to be the good or bad guys - i hate over the top evil for evil's sake as much as rainbow puking heeeey we gotta be gooooood douchebags

...does that make douchebags the bad guys, for not having any kind of real personality? ^^

And becoming a terrorist to your ENTIRE SPECIES for a piece of ass is a dick move, no matter how you try to defend it.
Ummmmmm, He wasn't really a terrorist he was fighting in a battle, that would be like saying every solder was a terrorist, and it wasn't his entire species just a small number that pulling a colossal "dick move" of attacking indigenous people for profit.

Now semantics aside, I always wanted the dark side in star wars to win, at least from the prequels, the jedi showed they where pretty much incompitant at keeping peace and one unified empire would have probably done allot better.
Also Loki, while I love Thor he was a dick.

Bleach. Specificly Ichigo's hollow alter ego. It would be so much better if he had he had taken over just for a few episodes (in a normal form not just as a monster). Ichigo is whiny ***** at times.

WHY?! WHY! Escapist you deleted my extremely detailed response! I wrote out multiple paragraphs explaining my point of view and then I accidentally pressed backspace which sent me back to the last page. I lost everything, that is an extremely flawed posting system.

Well to state things plainly: The Colonel from Avatar, Darth Vader from Star Wars, and Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid series.

I always personally rooted for Organization XIII in Kingdom Hearts, especially after playing 358/2 Days.

I wanted the humans in Avatar to win so badly. Mainly because I was sick of the "white guilt" stuff and Stephen Lang was hilariously badass.
Don't worry... with the massive amount of money to be made from Pandora the humans will be back with more than just a handful of mercenaries. The blue monkeys will get bombarded from orbit ;)
I actually hated that it is getting a sequel. That was my own ending I made for it. The humans come back with an army and blow them to hell from orbit, the end.
Really, I was pissed that the Navi won the battle. Firstly, this makes avatar nothing more than Dances with Wolves... IN SPACE. Secondly, though I geuss still the first one, it would have been one hell of a shock to the audience. Okay, not that good of reason.

Anyways, yeah, I rooted for the humans in Avatar, if that wasnt already obvious. I think its pretty telling of just how much a plot sucks when people have already guessed the endgame before the movie even hits the theaters.

Eh, quite a bit. I usually scratch that urge by watching shows with villain protagonists though, like Sweeny Todd...oh dear, now I've got the Sweeny Todd music in my head, thanks. :p
