Death is when you've stopped twitching. [Evil slow laugh]

Alright, alright...
I think you're dead when your body can't function anymore.

Around the time the body has shut down most of its functions, such as heart beats, breathing, and thinking.

I'm going to have to come in here and say that it's because life doesn't really exist and it's just an illusion created by its own subjects (i.e. us). That may not make any sense, but it's my opinion on it.

Basically, nothing matters, and anything important is only important because humans have decided it should be. Life is one of those things.

Interesting viewpoint, but surely you acknowledge death as the cessation of the illusion?

Hang on... that's hard.

The best reason I can understand is that the illusion can't really be said to have existed at all. Thus, it can't end.

Another thing to consider is that if a personal illusion ended, and another instance of the same illusion was created at random somewhere else (in another thing that humans could call a lifeform), what would define that as different, and would the original have suddenly ceased its cessation?

Why is it so hard for me to understand this concept? All I can do is write down what sounds like it makes the point I'm trying to, because anything I think I understand about it is within my mind and difficult to translate.

That's what I try to do here. No "Right" answers, just lots of opinions. :)

These are great threads! When I see a 'fairly interesting topic', it makes me happy :)

[sub]They're better than the 'favourite XXXX' threads.[/sub]

can we really pinpoint the time where life ceases?
Yes, about the time when her ex-professional-rugby-player dad comes home early and is standing at the bottom of the stairs between her bedroom and the front door...

[sub]If you didn't think it was possible to get out of that first story bedroom window and jump into the garden before... Well I guess it's time for an education.[/sub]

The time when someone truly dies - at least, the way I see it - is when said person's thoughts cease, the brain stops functioning, dissipating that particular personality forever.

Death? When you're body ceases to function.
Subjectively? Any form of memory loss is death.

I suppose I would say that death as we understand it happens when the brain ceases to function for a certain amount of time. Whether or not this is really death, or even as some suggest, birth, is a matter that can't really be discovered without dying. And since no one has actually come back from brain death to tell us, we'll just have to wait and see.

Also, all hail Rutger Hauer!!
