Most games like that are almost pure FPS in nature--Mass Effect 1 & 2 are the most recent examples I can think of, although there's no multiplayer or co-op.

OT: Play the games each other really likes, if one of you ends up liking it not only do you have something else in common but you could help the other learn how to play much quicker.

or even explore other genres together, try gettin into some tactical fps game for him, like MAG, Killzone 2, Shadowrun and Battlefield Bad Company 2.
