Disclaimer themed absurdity: I literally just joined this site, so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong by posting this (Like if I'm just repeating a thread or making an blatantly uninteresting one) via a gentle pat on the head and sending me on my naive little way instead of repetitive flaming with countless verbal groin kicks...

Odd random rant out of the way, here's the story:

I was bored the other day and decided to pick up my copy of RPG Maker 3 and take a stab at making a new fun creative story, which I think is coming along fairly well, then I had one of those sudden realizations that went somewhat like this; 'HEY! I should see how the interwebs reacts to a thread built upon sharing creative ideas for the game!' Well as it turns out...not so well. I made the mistake of trying to post a similar thread in an anime themed forum. Admittedly not the smartest idea, but I thought if I posted it in the 'general discussion' section I would have fair luck, but apparently they just like bashing Twilight and talking about anime in anything but the anime section (The bashing Twilight part was fun, I hate that series) So now I figured I'd try it in a new forum one related to, this may sound crazy but bear with me... Video Games!

Anywho, now that my big rant is over, does anyone else enjoy the game? do you have any ideas that you want to share?

If you're up for more reading, or just skipped all the insane ranting to get to the point then here's the storyline I'm working on right now, keep in mind it's not fully formed yet so there are some holes and some tweaking to be done:

The story starts off with a man named 'Calypso' as the main character, he is in a town called 'Valio' in the land of 'Argentos' and it soon becomes apparent that he is the general for the troops that defend the town. You also quickly discover that he had a mentor by the name of 'Chibara' who passed away for unknown reasons. While the town still mourns his loss they also have accepted Calypso as their general due to his ties with Chibara and have placed their faith in him.

Soon after being appointed general of the troops of Valio the town is attacked by a neighboring town named 'Norle' It doesn't take long at all for Calypso to realize that something doesn't sit right with the attacking army, they appear soulless and 'empty'. He gathers some of his troops as quickly as he can and leads an attack against the invading army, after a long fight through the night Calypso hurries to the leader of his town and requests permission for an immediate counterattack against the strange forces of Norle to gather some more information on why the attacking forces seemed so 'otherworldly', when his request is denied the general gathers what little troops will fall behind him and decides to lead somewhat of a suicide mission to gain the intelligence he desires. He leads what little forces he can straight into the country, where he gather the necessary information but is soon defeated by an opposing general. Luckily he survives the attack, but finds he has somehow returned to his own town, now shunned by the leader and the townspeople for sacrificing the lives of his followers for such a rash decision...

...Sorry my fingers are starting to cramp from all the typing so I'll cut it off there, but I would appreciate opinions on this tidbit of what I have so far, positive and negative, like I said there's quite a bit more though that I'll probably type later...

Sounds like interesting, if straightforward JRPG fare.
What is your opinion of that game overall? I have personally played both of the other RPG Maker games to come out in America and found that the first one is easier and more fun to use, though both could use greater flexibility in regards to battle systems (both ape Dragon Warrior/Quest's style, even though the latter is supposed to be cutting-edge graphics).

That said, there's some incredible mods and such that are much more varied. I can't name the exact tools involved, but look up 'Tales of the Ocean' on Youtube. I'm sure an RPG Maker game was used in some steps of the proces.

I have one still sitting around on RPG Maker '1', involving humans being caught in a war between demons and angels (changed the names and characteristics slightly). It has a bookish protagonist who only takes up the sword a fair ways into the game. Some day I might finish it, but there's no game quite as demanding of your PS1/2 memory cards- the winner of EGM's RPG Maker contest used SIX memory cards!

I used RMXP to create Potato back in the day. Basically standard "evil empire" RPG fare with what I like to believe is a good and innovative party system.

I can't say I'm a die hard fan of the series since I've only really played the third one, my stepbrother couldn't make heads or tails of the game and just threw it in my lap, so I picked it up and liked it so I held onto it. A few of my games I created I gave up on, since I either couldn't follow through with the story or found myself stuck due to certain other features, my most disappointing failure is probably a comedic RPG I was working on that had to do with the main character being a bunny creature who was kicked out of his homeland for being too creepy looking...

I was annoyed with some of the restriction initially, but once i was shown how to overcome the one that annoyed me most I've been more interested in the game, I didn't like the weapon restrictions to certain classes, but I found an FAQ on Gamefaqs.com that told me how to equip any weapon to anyone, so in my current game I will have a fighter who can duel wield Katanas. My current RPG will definitely get more elaborate though, I've been working on creating the sense that there's two plains of existence in the game, and I plan to kill of the main character during gameplay, only to have him awaken in the alternate plain, at different intervals in the game (If I can manage it as well as I'd like) the player will be switching between the character who was killed off, and an alternate party that is entwined into the main character's disappearance somehow...

Six memory cards!?! holy crap! That must have taken forever to build! I heard there were contests to send your data to, but I was never told if they're still going on or not (I always assumed that an event like that would already be over, and that I missed my chance.)

I never even new a game like this existed. A shame I don't own a PS2 though. Does anybody if there's game's like these for the PC? As for the story you've written so far, it seems okay. If it were to follow a normal JRPG formula, that Calypso would now find himself in prison only to be freed by someone who had ties to his old mentor who knows more about this village of Norle and what it has become. Of course this is just an example you can go whatever way you like with the story!

Hmm...I dunno about sending him to jail, I was thinking more along the lines of having the town exile him until a certain mission is completed, on his way through this mission he discovers what was going on with the people of Norle, only to be killed and sent to the alternate plain of existence that I mentioned when I quoted Whitefangofwar, but again these ideas are still a little rough...

I believe the game was made for PC before a PS2 adaption came along, you might have some luck finding a copy on Amazon

RPG Maker VX is actually the most recent entry in the series, and it's for the PC. There's a trial out and the program itself is $60. The PC versions offer a lot more possibilities than the console ones, although the only console version I've played was the first one that came out forever ago. You download and buy it through the Enterbrain website.

Yeah you can go wherever you like with the story, it was just one of those ideas that popped in my head(not the most original though). Anyway thanks for the heads up, I've always been a fan of the rpg genre and have always wanted to make my own one day.
