I have never been much of an RPG fan. The closest I have ever got to playing a serious RPG would either be Paper Mario or Mass Effect 2 (which I just played through as a soldier). I've just been reading the reviews of Skyrim and it looks like an absolutely spectacular game. I was just wondering If it might be too much for someone like me.

It might be. I would say it's pretty noob friendly in the beginning but I can't say much beyond that as I haven't played it a lot myself. However, if you're looking for something that's gonna give you countless hours of stuff to do, this is the game for you. You might wanna get a strategy guide though. So you don't get lost and such.

It probably will be, but then again, even for a seasoned RPG player, it is, at times, too much, but that is part of the appeal, it gives you a feel for the size of the game, and emphasizes the weight of every decision you make. Pick it up, you won't regret it (at least, I don't think you will. . .).

it has a lot to do with what qualities you enjoy in a game, it just being a good game doesn't mean you will enjoy it. I, as many likely do, enjoy Skyrim and similar games because you can interact with the whole of an expansive world open for you to explore and experience. It is more meaningful when you put careful consideration and time into building a character that you use to delve into a detailed environment. I think its far more enjoyable when you can accept a game where you cant get perfect completion and just keep playing out of interest in the world and story, not to beat that last quest or get item x.

Indeed, getting lost is part of the package.

I would say that you need to start somewhere, and Skyrim isn't your worst choice. If you want you can pm me if you're in need of advice.

Thanks for the advice. Now I'm just worried about having the self control to pull myself away! I am going to University and I usually just play games in smaller chunks but I figure I'll do all the starting crap over these next few weeks and then really delve into it over my Christmas break.

I'm on the same boat as you, I've never really played a "big RPG" like this, I think I'l give it a go though, it looks spectacular.

I'd say yes but wait til the price goes down first if you're not sure you'll like it.

Yep. It's noob friendlier than the other games in the series.

See, in every game in the Elder Scrolls you start as a prisoner, then get released or escape somehow, usually leading you to be thrown into the world with no idea where to go or what to do. THIS TIME, they actually give you someone to tag along with... if you want to. It's a very small change, but it gives you more to invest in and a lot more of a sense of direction starting out, and that makes all the difference for people who are usually uncomfortable with this kind of game.
