Right so I'm off school this week and all my friends have pissed off around the globe, basically I need an RPG to tear into.

I've played all the obvious ones (Oblivion, Fallout, Dragon age) so maybe somthing obscure and preferably western. Cost isnt really important but obviously cheap is good. Cheers
have you tried MARDEK rpg? its a flash game. there are currently 3 chapters. and the first chapter is short and the other two are longer are longer then the first chapter. i am not sure exactly what type of rpg it is but the first chapter is take should under under a hour so it's is worth a try. the game is on kongregate. even if you dislike it it's still free so you have nothing to lose except time.

Never winter nights. You can grab the diamond edition off of GOG for $10. Alternatively pick up kotor on steam for the same price.

Witcher 2 is a good and challenging RPG that you can tear into. Not fairly cheap, but worth the investment nonetheless.Demon's Souls for the PS3 is worth looking at as well.

Older RPG's that I also recommend are Gothic(1&2),Arcanum.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines: very good for a modern context and makes vampires look human with that little sense that "yeah, we're all killers"

Baldur's Gate 1, 2, ToB: I know you've probably played it before but I could recommend playing BG 1 with TuTu and play as a half-orc barbarian all the way through.

Neverwinter Nights 1: Very much in the same flow of BG, very interesting set of possible mods and campaigns. It's very similar to playing a single player session of D&D (Do Not play the sequel!).

Sid Meier's Pirates!: Definitely one of those RPGs that I go back to every once and a while. It's not great for customization but you'll have a lot of fun sinking ships, finding treasure, and stealing governor's daughters.

I'm fairly sure I could think of others but let me know if any of these suit your fancy.

If you're ok with playing a 10-year old game, Baldur's Gate 2. It's still one of the deepest rpgs around.

Alpha Protocol if you haven't already. It isn't beautiful but it's a nice break from your average RPG and it's fun!
It's AMAZING i love every part of that game.

Neverwinter Nights 2. You can get it on Steam for $20.

If you can look past a few bugs and a UI issue or two, it truly is great. The expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, is even better.

I like it because the way you chose to level your character can allow you to play the game in differnet ways.

The Divine Divinity series...Beyond Divinity wasn't as great but it was still an amusing experience.

How obscure are we talking about? Did you play the classics (Arcanum, Vampire, BG, Icewind, Planescape) or not?
This and these. The Divinity series is amazing and Divine Divinity is IMHO one of the finest slightly old school RPGs out there (although it was 2002, I believe, so not too retro).

i know you said no JRPGs, but try kingdom hearts. i spent so much time on that game.
To be fair KH does and doesn't count as JRPG. It counts because it's Japanese but its nothing like the Final Fantasy's, Dragon Quests, Breath of Fire etc.

Outright amazing game. One of the best and the reason I'm oddly stoked for SW:TOR (usually I don't really do MMOs although I enjoyed Galaxies <-yes I thought it was a good game and I had fun so ;p to all you haters out there) :)

I'd suggest Mount & Blade: Warband. It isn't really a typical RPG, but I've had a lot of fun with it.
Seconded. That game is downright addicting. It also has excellent mod support.
Edit: Also: Fallout 1 and 2... wait, you said recent games... How recent are we talking? This console generation or last console generation?

This. Bug-ridden and a bit ugly, but the atmosphere and plot are great. Plus it has a lot of replay value.

Just get the latest fanmade patch before you give it a go.

Witcher 2. It's what Dragon Age wants to be.

And The Spirit Engine 2. Better than average writing and aesthetics, stellar tactical depth and music. And it's free.

Almost all of the good old ones were already named, but give Deus Ex a try. It has enough RPG elements to be considered I think. Dungeon Siege isn't half-bad if you like it your RPG a bit more on the Hack&Slay side of things. Of course then you also have to get Diablo because you can't get any better Hack&Slay RPG. Sacred is quite fun in that regard as well. Icewind Dale seems like a good follow-up to Baldurs Gate.

I guess STALKER doesn't quite count, but it's a great game once it's patched enough so I'll just throw it in here. Looks amazing with the right mods to aid the XRay engine.

Maybe you'll find Avadon - The Black Fortress entertaining, you should be able to find it on steam.
Then you could also attempt the original Fallouts (1 and 2, maybe Tactics, but don't expect much there) for some isometric, story-heavy goodness.
Kings Bounty has a lot of RPG Elements but plays more like Heroes of Might and Magic, so maybe it's not perfectly suited.
Fable is an RPG, but it's only worth playing once, really.

I think that should be enough for a few summers.

either go for a classic you missed, like diablo II or kotor, get through some mass effect or maybe a crossover like Borderlands, which I personally really enjoyed. Alternatively, go for one of the under-the-radar classics like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. That was a great game, actually, and it's on GOG so go grab it. Hours and hours of fun to be had in there.

Loved this game. Wish I could get it running on my new PC. I didn't get around to finishing it :(

This one too. Awesome game. Second one isn't too bad either.

I really enjoyed this game. Sure, it's got a few bugs, but it's really different from the standard "get sword, kill dragon" sort of thing.

I second this and also check out the second one they are both good by themselves but add mod's and they become 2 of the best game's I have ever played. Also if you want something short and sweet check out Jade empire. It is a asian inspired RPG by the same company but not a JRPG in any sense. You can get it cheap for the pc, it's not that long but it's long enough to be fun without outstaying it's welcome or decending into time wasting.
This is true. Jade Empire is more like a kung-fu movie than a JRPG. And it's got a fairly good story and interesting combat mechanics as well.

NWN was LOOOOooooonnnnggggg. I've never managed to finish it yet. I keep getting bored after 2/3 chapters and by the time I come back I can't remember what I'm supposed to be doing or how to play and have to restart.

It wasn't on your list, so I don't know whether you've done it or not yet, but MASS EFFECT!!

Wow... I read the title and I immediately knew I had to recommend this game, only to find out that the first person posting here already recommended it.

But at least let me add some extra information.

The game is ancient but it's still looking better than anything else released 12 years ago (and many years after). Still, the low resolution of the game really bothers me now. So if you are gonna try out Planescape: Torment, install the new graphic mod which allows you to play at high resolution. I've tried it myself and after all that time the game still looks gorgeous.

Incidentally, the site also mentions a few gameplay mods. But I'll leave that up to you whether or not thats an improvement.

PC: Witcher 2
Difficulty: Kinda Hard to Ball Aching
Price: $50

PS3: Nier (I know it's got bad reviews, but it's underrated to me)
Difficulty: Medium to Kinda Hard
Price: Dirt cheap
Barring that you could always put money down on SKYRIM 8D

Xbox 360: I don't know. Copy/paste Nier here. *shrug*

PS2: Persona 4
Difficulty: Easy to Kinda Hard
Price: $40 bucks I think

PSP: Persona 1, Persona 3 Portable (P3P) or God Eater Burst (more a hunting game, really)
Difficulty: Persona 1= BALL ACHING, P3P = Medium to BALL ACHING, God Eater Burst = Medium to Kinda Hard
Price: Persona 1 is pretty cheap, but has to be downloaded from PSN which is...kinda...yeah >_>
God Eater Burst is about $30
Persona 3 Portable: Cheap. Been out for some time

DS: Devil Survivor (part RTS) or Golden Sun
Difficulty: Devil Survivor = Kinda Hard to BALL ACHING, Golden Sun I haven't played yet
Price: Both are cheap

If you'd be willing to look at another genre I'd recommend:
Looking for an interesting game that's creepy, kinda funny, and CREEPY: Alice: Madness Returns (June 14)
Looking for a long game filled with action (and don't mind subtitles): Yakuza 4 (out now)
Looking for a fighting game with an interesting plot but doesn't take itself too seriously: Mortal Kombat 9/2011 (out now)

Hope that helps! ...Son of a ***** am I excited for Alice: Madness Returns *bounces in seat*
