Hello,

Although I identify as a "hardcore gamer", RPGs do not interest me.
My boyfriend, on the other hand, loves them, especially of the turn-based variety.
I am willing to give them a try. Please suggest a few RPGs, preferably co-op, on the PC.

Thank you.

You can play Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 co-op though only the main player gets to control movement and conversation outside combat. Neverwinter Nights also has a similar co-op mode. Neither of these are turn based though, and off hand I can't think of a co-op RPG with turn based combat. Indeed very few RPG's have co-op at all, most that do are of the action RPG "Hack, slash, loot, rinse, repeat" variety.

I'm gonna go ahead and say Dark Souls.
You could also try Dark Souls.
Dark Souls is another one I'd recommend. It also has co-op of sorts
Have I recommended Dark Souls yet?

Persona 4, best JRPG, and probably best RPG in general ever made. You can get it pretty cheap nowadays since it was a PS2 game but there's a remake coming out for the PS Vita if you happened to buy one of those.

Lunar Silver star story complete. While a single player game if each person picks one or two characters and switch off control it can be a very fun game.

Torchlight II is a great ARPG with good co-op. It gets really hard if you have more than two people, though. At least in my opinion. I might just suck, though.

Yeah, I probably suck.

But RPGs have typically been loner time for me, so I don't know much co-op.

The first rpg that I played(other than baldur's gate dark alliance which was also a great co-op diablo clone) was Dragon Age: Origins, and I loved it. It really turned me onto rpgs, I am not sure if it is turn based. If it is, it is like Kotor where it is not apparent unless you look for it. It has a great story(though a very cliche plot) and it isn't all that complicated if you go on easy or normal difficulty. I can't think of co-op RPGs other than the previously mentioned Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (2? I was like 6 when I played I can't remember which one). It is a Diablo clone (no the rest is a very foggy memory) you could play 3 races and chose from 3 classes and you could play together though it was for ps2.

edit: just read prefferably for pc. BA:DA 2 is only for ps3 and original xbox, though I did just think of Lord of the Rings: War in the North. I would consider it predominantly an action game but it has rpg elements and might be a good starter. It is multiplayer as well.

Persona 4, Persona 4, annnnnd....

Persona 4.

Please, just get it. It's perfect.

Play it and you will see for yourself just how perfect it is.
[small][sub][sub][sub][sub][sub]I guess if I had to suggest anything else, it would be Borderlands 2. It's good, I guess. Not Persona 4 good.[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub][/small]

So yeah...

I wouldn't consider Borderlands an rpg.

Also, Seeing how many people are gushing over P4 I am putting on my (way to long) to-buy list. Is the full name of the game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4?

If he doesn't care to pull up an SNES emulator, tell him to grab Chrono Trigger. And I second the notion of playing Dark Souls, just tell him to use a controller and to grab the Durante mod.

Hope I helped, and have fun! :)

That's correct. :D

And just a heads up, you're going to want to put P4 on the tippy top of your to-buy list.

Because, ya know, Persona 4 is perfect.

[small][sub]I know it's subjective. Shut up.[/sub][/small]

Some good picks have already been chosen, so I'll go ahead and toss in Final Fantasy 12.

Great story, great visuals, great voice acting, and the combat was innovative for its time.

Just ignore the guy you start out as, and everything will be fine.

Yup, to answer the question most people have next, you do not need to have played any of the previous titles (Though 3 is really good as well) and it really is a stunning game

On PC, huh?

Try Recettear or Fortune Summoners. If you're more into the WRPGs, go with TES: Oblivion (or Skyrim), Fallout 3, Mass Effect or Dragon Age: Origins. I've also heard good things about Dark Souls, if you want a challenge.

Now, if you're looking for non-PC RPGs (including strategy RPGs):
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy (4, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, particularly)
Pokémon
Disgaea
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters
Fire Emblem
Shin Megami Tensei (specifically Nocturne, Devil Survivor, and ESPECIALLY Persona 3 and Persona 4)
Kingdom Hearts
Tales of Symphonia/the Abyss/Graces
The Last Story

There aren't too many RPGs with co-op play. Probably the closest in this entire post would be the Tales games and The Last Story, although The Last Story is a Wii game that doesn't support local multiplayer.

Demon souls was better the whole pose system ruined Dark Souls IMO. But both are dungeon crawlers so if the OP is looking for story he's not going to find it.

Even though Atlus has been really douchey with region locking and its use of region locked consoles,I have to say Persona 4 is without a doubt, a must have.
Best game I ever played, got me into JRPGs when I hated the genre.
But if you can get two games,YOU MUST GET DARK SOULS AS WELL!
This combo is godly! two of the best games ever made but both play differently in their own way and each of them are must plays!
