Looking for a new RPG to start playing, but one without heading into the future / space and without too much in the way of magic.

I've done Oblivion / Fallouts, Stalker, and have lately been all about Mount and Blade with some mods, but finding them going a touch stale.

Any suggestions on a halfway decent RPG that doesn't have me shooting laser weapons or mixing spells to cast at the dreaded Dragon-God of Mount Gadgmaldkga (Oblivion type magic is alright I guess, but even then it's pushing it for me) ?

Well, I'm not sure how much story, graphics and gameplay weigh individually, but as so many times before I'd like to suggest Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, preferably with Tutu mod, Dragon Age: Origins, a spiritual succuessor to the BG games, great fun and story, and good preperation for DA2.

And last, but not least, Planescape: Torment. One of my top three games of all times, absolutely fantastic story, pretty such unrivaled, even today. While the combat isn't really all that great, the story, setting and characters more than makes up for that.

Hope it helps, but with graphics are very important to you, wait for other suggestions.

Are you down with JRPGS as well?

Cause in that case, Persona 3 and Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne are really good games.

1. Planescape Torment. it's tricky to get it to run on win7, but IMO it has the second best game storyline of all time. An absolute must.
2. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. the original game was...decent, but this expansion is the closest you're going to get to the feeling Planescape gives you. wonderful story, original characters, and one of the best pack of endings out there.
3. the original Fallouts (1&2) thought the story shows it's age now, the atmosphere and humour are amazing.
Others: anything Bioware released. period. specializing in RPG's, they have created many great titles, like Knights of the Old Republic, or Mass Effect.

ps: might wonder why no Baldur's Gate there, I have only played like two hours of it.

So it sounds like Dragon Age: Origins is a no go for you. There are mages (you don't have to be a mage, but you'll want to have at least one in your party) and a bunch of dragons. Oh well, not everyone likes the same things.

Mass Effect is in space, but the guns don't shoot lasers...

You kind of canceled out a lot of RPGs with

that statement.

Alpha Protocol is a spy RPG. It has its fair share of issues, but plays much better since it received a patch.

There is Fallout: New Vegas. No magic there. There are lasers, though...

Preaching to the converted.
Times are tough for guys seeking a "realistic" RPG approach.

Thanks for the tip of Alpha Protocol though, I'm looking into it.

.... and I accepted Fallout lasers because I refused to use them, and once 21st Century Weapons is installed the Lasers go the way of the dodo.

I just need something to keep me occupied until Stronghold 3 comes out this year

Fallout New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, and The Witcher.

I can't recommend those 3 games hard enough.

New Vegas does have laser weapons though, but you don't have to specialize, or use, them.
The Witcher does have magic, but not much. Mainly just force push and fire blast. There's others, but they're not too important. I rarely, if ever used 'em.

But yeah, those 3 games. Those ones I recommend.

Recent:
Dragon Age: Origins
If you don't mind FPS elements, Bioshock. It is only mildly RPGish, but it's good.
Persona 3 and Persona 4.

Older:
Can't recommend Planescape Torment enough.
Balder's Gate 1&2 are quite good too.

You could try Divine Divinity series. Divine Divinity 2 is like the love child of Baldur and Oblivion. You don't have to play a mage either. It's easier as a warrior. Also, you'll be a dragon.

The rest have been said. The Witcher. No spells, just signs and not even those major.

Alpha Protocol.

What RPG these doesn't have you shooting laser weapons or mixing spells? You're one tough cookie.

You should try Baldur's Gate 2, the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. They started making a spiritual successor to that too, but it got canned.

If you don't mind older games, Neverwinter Nights is made of win, especially Hordes of Underdark expansion (enjoyed it much more than original campaign and Shadows of Undrentide) Some of the Premium modules are also awesome (Pirates of the Sword Coast). Also Arcanum but beware that graphics were outdated even when it was released.

older, I'd suggest you try Sweet Home on the NES/Famicom

it's the most unique RPG I've seen, and the second best movie-to-game adaptation

though it's japanese only, but there is a canadian guy who can get it on a NES cartridge for you, and I heard it is legal

as for newer, Dragon Age says my folks

Bioware has some of the best story driven RPG's out there but be aware that they are very different from the Oblivion style open world ones. There isn't much outside of Bethesda that is totally open world unless you feel like diving into an MMO.

Heh, I think it's pretty safe to say that Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn is more than a spiritual successor seeing is it's the same company, setting, characters, title and all. We call those sequels.
