I'm a huge RPG fan and love the elder scolls series, anything from bioware, and the witcher series.

However, yesterday I was going through the steam list of RPG games and realized just how many RPG games there are out there that I've never even heard of. There has to be some hidden gems in there yeah?

So escapist, any suggestions? Anything with a decent story and gameplay?

I would suggest anything from Bethesda or Bioware.
Or maybe you would like Gothic series. But start with either 1 or 3. 2nd one is hardest (and IMO best) and if you are going to start with 3rd then get all the patches and community patch but as far as I know they are already preinstalled when you buy it from Steam. And also don't bother with Forsaken Gods (G3 stand alone expansion).
All games have rather good story but that is surpassed by great atmoshpere and gameplay that rewards exploration (unless you get torn apart by beasts in process) and has combat system that requires skill and not just stats.

You could try one of the older classic RPGs such as Deus Ex, Fallout 1/2, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Bladurs Gate II and many others.

For some more modern games I would suggest most of Obsidian's game such as KOTOR II, Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas.

fallout 1,2,and new vegas. if your going to play the first 2 then download the patch for the first, and the restoration project for the second.

Drakensang: The Dark Eye and its Addon(prequel), Drakensang: The River of Time, it's based on the pen&paper rpg "The Dark eye". I liked the story and the combat-mechanics, the graphics still look nice although a little bit dated(3 years old). If you never heard or played the P&P you probably will need a little bit of time to get a feeling for the game-mechanics. I only played the German version, so I can't judge how good the translation, or the little bit of voice-acting is. The game should be available on steam.

Here is a little gameplay trailer I found:

Star ocean: the last hope, granted its a jrpg you didnt mention if you liked them or not, but the characters are alot of fun, the combat is pretty hectic, completeing the main story took me around about 75 hours, could mean im slow but i had that much fun with it, to finish the game off i came home from work and played the last 12 hour straight with a bottle and a half of rum. But i digress. post game theres a bunch of multi level dungeons plus arena battles and ridiculous items to craft. give it a shot

If you haven't played Divinity 2 yet, thats pretty good.

It has 3D 3rd person perspective, with a single character. Combat is action oriented. The dialogue and story is very good. The world feels big with lots of things to discover, but still has a bit of maze-like feel to it.

Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga

It's absolutely wonderful. I cannot possibly recommend it enough. The world is stunning, the music just awesome, the character building is deep, the story is compelling, the dialogue absolutely hilarious (yet it never descends into parody), and exploration is really fun and actually meaningful. Divinity II is without a doubt a hidden gem on the Steam list.

Fah, I am currently in the middle of my first playthrough of the game, and I am a Malk. It is entirely doable. I would certainly recommend it.

OT: In addition to the above mentioned Vampire - The Maquearade: Bloodlines, I would also recommend Divine Divinity, Baldur's Gate II, Planescape: Torment, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, Deus Ex, and Bioshock. I also have some JRPGs I would reccomend, but you don't strike me as someone who likes those types of games. :)

Vampire: The masquerade: Bloodlines

It's a an FPS RPG hybrid with a good, original story, and a great way to stop grinding (you get experience only for completing quests/objectives).

As for gameplay, try a demo and make your own opinion, but I found it to be great (combat A.I. feels somewhat lacking, but it's a very old game).

Also, playing as a Malkavian is hilarious, but I wouldn't recommend it until you've the game at least once.
"The reason we exist is because the jellyfish will it so, WHY ELSE?!"

Malkavians are so awesome.

OT: A second third vote for buying Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines! But I strongly recommend getting the unofficial patch if you do. It's a very good game, with more RP than most RPGs have, and Malkavians are an awesomeness you will find in no other game.
