I've never really been much of a gamer, the last game I spent any real time with was Ocarina of time, but Oblivion sucked several hundred hours of my life away. That's basically my experience with the genre, what else should I play?

Mass Effect's very good if you like lots of dialogue. I've played it for nearly a hundred hours.

If you don't mind last-gen graphics then I highly recommend both Knights of the Old Republic games.

I hear enormous praise for Diablo 2 although I've never played it.

Fallout 3 and Too Human are coming out soon, those look pretty good.

And Twilight Princess, if you like Ocarina of Time.

If you like the openness of Oblivion, maybe look into Morrowind (The Elder Scrolls 3) if you don't mind super retro gaming). As far as plot and ambiance, Morrowind is much better. but that requires more time investment than Oblivion. Probably for more fervent gamers

Other ridiculously excellent RPGs are the ones made by Bioware like Jade Empire, Kights of the Old Republic (see my review in the competition) and stuff. That's much less open-world but 100% better plot than Oblivion.

Then there's JRPGs, which can be very good if you're into that sort of thing. Right now I'm playing Lost Odyssey (new and currently available) and I really like it. I didn't and wouldn't spend 60 US dollars on it though. The Final Fantasy series is your JRPG staple.

Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction blew me away when I first started RPGs. The graphics are a bit dated, but it's still a lot of fun. Definitely check them out. Super dark story-telling.

that's the exact same rig I have.. plays anything i throw at it, so i'd say fairly capable is an understatement.

that said, the Gothic series of games might interest you. I'd say start with the first or second one, if you don't mind retro gaming a bit, but if not.. just pick up 3. It's not as polished as Oblivion and you need to make sure you patch it up to date.. but it's the same idea as Oblivion. Open-ended RPG with beautiful graphics.

I'd really have to know what you liked out of Oblivion and why you're bored of it.

Unfortunately, there's really not many games like it. Morrowind isn't as good, Oblivion basically refined a lot of the "suck" out of it. There is Two Worlds, which is a game that gets better as you get further into it and used to its quirks - it's probably the most Oblivion-like game out there... but it's overall not as good Oblivion.

I forgot about those, good advice. They're kinda quirky in the way Two Worlds is, though.

What systems do you have?
Xbox 360, PS3, A fairly capable PC (Q6600/GTS8800)
Pick up the top five Star Wars box. You'll get Knights of the Old Republic (played it quite a few times) and some other great games.
If you want to try MMOs, get the test trial of World of Warcraft, or wait for Warhammer Online like me. I put more when I think of it.

"I'd really have to know what you liked out of Oblivion and why you're bored of it."

You know, what I really liked about Oblivion was the character creation, the openness, the immersion, I even liked the level scaling.Mostly I liked the character creation and the mechanics of the character development, and how there was a dozen different ways to play the game.

I'm bored with those same things, I really played the heck out of this game on PS3 and then PC running FCOM.

I appreciate the suggestions, I need a game to get me through until FO3 releases, oh yeah I played the fallout games too.

Oblivion was a sick looking game with a nice, meaty, deep storyline with a ton of action that will keep you interested for hours. But any game that looks similar to it probably isn't as much as, say... GTA?

All your missions have you following a radar blip on your HUD and there's literally zero difference in combat difficulty from the beginning to the end. It's also a sandbox game.

I love Oblivion and I love GTA, and I'd call them far more similar in mechanics than KOTOR or Mass effect. the other 2 games are simply their own RPG genre. Gothic, Silverfall, NWN2, are all similar concepts to Oblivion, but if you want to throw Oblivion down to play any of those games, you're only going to frustrate yourself.

Fallout 1, Fallout 2. Must plays if you can still find them.
Mass Effect is hours of fun, attempting to get the many different endings.

Honestly, though, the only game listed here that I think is exactly what you're looking for to pass the time before the next big seller is Twilight Princess. You... just need a WII :(

MGS4 is a good time consumer, especially for '100% complete freaks'... got a PS3?

And then on 360 there's Obliv... shit.

Oddly enough, computers (once thought to be the last stronghold of good RPGs) are really weak in the post-Oblivion world of RPG gaming.

Go pirate Baldur's Gate 2 or something.

Baldur's Gate 2. Best RPG ever made imo, if you dont mind some really ugly graphics. Don't believe me? It's the 6th highest rated PC game of all time.

I would reccomend fallout 2 for you, if you don't mind dated graphics. if graphics are a problem, just wait a few months for fallout 3, Bethesda is making it. (Same people that made Oblivion). Snag a PS3 copy and enjoy.
It's not an RPG, but since you have a computer, I would totally recommend STALKER. It's an atmospheric, more mature FPS.

If you like Atmosphere, pick up Bioshock, and Call of Cthulhu.

I so want to love that game, but I can only take so much loudspeaker yelling in russia in english in a russian accent. Seriously, did that issue never ONCE get mentioned in the beta testing?

Morrowind, the old Fallouts, anything by Spiderweb Software, Mass Effect if you don't make more than one game...

But never, ever play the Xbox port of Dark Messiah.

Did you ever play the console version? I stopped playing after I died for no reason the second time around.

I would suggest Fable The lost chapters.

It's not as much a freeroaming game as Oblivion is but the character creation is god and the storyline is great to say the least.

The graphics are a bit out of date but they aren't that bad for xbox original game.

I liked the game a lot and i still play it.
