Legend of Zelda. it's a great series with this sense of charm that never goes away. I'd try the DS ones. the puzzles aren't the hardest, but I personally like the Wind Waker art style the most.

I don't know about recent non-JRPG and non-those-companies, but if you can find a way to score a copy of Skies of Arcadia, you take that game and never let it go.
It looks to be a hack-and-slash, but if you play it like one (ie. button mashing combos...) you will die. The game rewards those who are slower and methodical, as well as rewarding those who pay attention, mainly by not dieing. It's less hack-and-slash than Oblivion and Morrowind were.bussinrounds said:
