Western. I don't like the style of Japanese characters with their silly hair and all that.

Also, turn based combat sucks.

WRPGs or JRPGs?

That's like asking me to choose between Cookie Dough and Chocolate Fudge Brownie.

Except there's no Half Baked option.

Oh, yes, how turn based combat sucks.

Especially in Fallout and all the other WRPGs in that style, right?

Western for gameplay.

Japanese for story.

I like both, though. Turn based is fine, when the animations are short, or if there is a variety of them. *glares at Lost Odyssey*

My favorite RPG is Oblivion, but the rest of my top five are all JRPGs.

Western RPGs mostly because there are only a few JRPGs out for PC. Also every character in a JRPG looks like their hair is made of concrete or something similarly though.

I hate the turn-based style of Western RPGs, the whole dice rolls and watching as my warrior consistently swing his weapon aimlessly, I hate Western RPGs turn based system. I hope it will be somehow fixed with the "action" focus of Dragon Age (or at least, they way it looks it will be).

Even Fallout 3 displayed how despite it got the RP right, the First Person Shooter aspect was shitty, and killing almost every monster with one lazer beeeeam, can get old, really fast.

I love both styles of RPG, but I tend to gravitate more so towards Japanese. I think that comes from my being an anime fan, and the similarities one sees between Japanese RPGs and anime. However, most Western RPGs are non-linear. I love being able to customize my game world and character to my liking, and I would love to see a Japanese style RPG with Western customization ability.

The creator of this forum should have made it a poll just to show how much Japanese games suck.

WRPG fans couldn't keep themselves from flaming for one page... again. Seriously, why the hell are these people so elitistic? Does it come automatically with a PC?

JRPGs might have their own fair share of clichés, but at least they made their own instead going straight for Tolkien-mimics.

Also, the whole linearity thing comes with much stronger storytelling.

Aleast I don't feel like I'm working in JRPGs. The whole offline MMO style is unnecessarily clumsy and slow for a single player game.

And oh please, stop basing the entire WRPG genre on Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. Two good and progressive (progressive here meaning making a shooter and hastily pasting some RPG on it) games and suddenly the genre is light years ahead its Japanese counterpart?

It really depends on my mood, I've kinda outgrown JRPGs and some of the themes in the genre seem to get old pretty quick but then again there are some interesting ones. I liked the Dark Cloud and Kingdom Hearts series and a few of the ones on XBOX 360 have me interested. JRPGs tend to have more linear stories and progression but sometimes that's just what I want from a game. Turn based combat can be good, if done right, I liked the combat in Enchanted Arms (the only good part of that slop of a game) but the active time battle system from the FF games gets really annoying really fast.

I play more Western RPGs nowadays, infact its a western RPG that is one of my favorite games of all time, KotOR II: TSL. You are often given more ability to personalize your character and they are more open ended more often than not. I also like that quite a few WRPGs also allow you to choose dialogue or actions that have definite impact on the game's story and/or gameplay. However these games are just as easy to screw up as JRPGs, or did you people not hear of the little game called TWO WORLDS? How about Too Human? Not to mention that while slaying orcs, aliens, or government agents is fun you get tired of them when it seems like every game has them, just under a different name.

So really, both genres have thier merits it just depends on what you're in the mood for and how well the game is executed. sorry about the load of text, I tend to ramble often. Like this one time, I tell you, I couldve taled the head off a ploitician , imean total... (trails off into the distance with various yarns, axioms, jokes and phrases)

Hmmm.. I'm quite torn on this one.

I've always loved final fantasy games and JRPGs tend to have a better story line, more interesting characters and much cooler settings. WRPGs have a lot of freedom (or the illusion of freedom at least) and are more manly.

I'm going to choose both.

Having said that, no RPG, east or west, can stand up to the might of Dungeons and Dragons. Muhuhahahah!

Morrowind is my perfect RPG. Don't have much taste for JRPGs, I'm afraid. Make me another game like ESIII, Beth!

Both!

Western RPG's often have better "Roleplaying" and better plots but JRPG's have better characters with more interesting personalities.

Frankly I couldn't live without either and I'm only an avid defender of JRPG's because of all the mindless Yahtzee driven agression on this site.

Note: The only "RPG" subgenre's I don't like (but won't insult) are MMORPG's and Hack and Slashers (like Diablo)

Western, TES.
I used to prefer JRPGs alot, but only on gameboy, which I had tons of. Console ones tend to lose me after a bit.

Time waster that makes me feel good at the end JRPG
When I don't have that much time and want to smack stuff for a hour or two and level up, Western.

I'll play whichever comes my way. I really, really don't care, as long as it's an RPG, I'm happy.
