Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Haha, okay, sorry for the obnoxious title, but at least it got you here and I promise you, there's a logical reason for that onomatopoeia.

Hello fellows Escapists,

Currently, I've picked up the idea of buying a motorcycle in the near future, as I'm looking to go cheap for ground-transportation as the bike itself is cheaper than a car, and of course, it's got better mpg. I've done some research, and I'm looking at buying one in the Touring/Sports-Touring category because of the performance, design, comfort of it. (So I've seen.)

I still don't know much about how it's worked out for people who ride them, however, and I'm looking for some input on the whole aspect.

So I ask you, my friends:
~Do you agree with my choice of bike-type, or should I go with something else?
~What's your experience with motorcycles?
~Any specific brand name or model I should look out for?
~Any genuine import is also desired and welcomed!

Thank you!

at least go with a chopper, though my opinion is some what swayed by owning one, I've been riding for about 4 years now and enjoy it enormously, Triumph are great bikes (saying that having owned one) but i've been looking at Harleys lately and they seem ok, good luck with your bike quest, any bike should be able to make you happy so just get out and ride!

I don't have any experience with motorcycles, but my dad used to say they were a fun and

efficient way of getting around.

My neighbor also cracked his skull while riding a motorcycle.

My input is simply to be cautious (as if you haven't heard that already).

Get one of those motorcycles from WW2 with the side car and the MG34 on it. Would be so awesome going around town with one of those :D

I used to ride dirt bikes, but no other experience.

I would recommened a car over a bike due to 1 major thing, weather. Anything but a warm day with clear skies is not good for a bike rider. Be it rain, cold, etc.

Touring bikes are optimised for comfortable long-distance travel. If you're going to be doing a lot of this, go for it. If most of your riding is urban, you may want to get a cheap buzz-around-town bike instead, or as well.

I rode dirt/racing bikes for a while, I was spectacularly unsuccessful at it. Be mindful that 80% of motor-vehicle related hospitalisations involve a motorbike - a scary statistic when you consider the ratio of motorbike riders to drivers. Sometimes you'll really wish for that big metal cage between you and everything else that a car provides.

Everyone has their favourites but it doesn't really matter. Japanese bikes are excellent quality, as are the American and European bikes, but they all ride very differently. Try before you buy to see what you prefer, and remember almost all bike riders are ridiculously, irrationally one-eyed about brands, that's all I can say.

A bit off subject :
You know, there's a French film called "RRRrrrr!!!" Directed by Alain Chabat (Napoleon in Night At The Museum 2).
