Howdy. I was thinking recently that I'd try out an RTS game, to see what they are like, to me they look like a load of fun and i was wanted to ask everyone what RTS games they would suggest to someone with little knowledge of them.
Thankee in advance!

Dawn of War.

It's graphically effective, very fun and a lot more fast-paced than other RTS's. I turned a few of my best mates into RTS addicts with this game.

I suggest you pick up DoW first, then Winter Assault > Dark Crusade > Soulstorm. You can it second hand for about $6.

The following should be simple and familiar enough for most non-RTS players:

Herzog Zwei [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herzog_Zwei] has a player-controlled unit and no building. You capture prebuilt bases that function as income sources and unit spawn points.
Ground Control [http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/groundcontrol/] has no building and no resources. Take what units you're given and fight, fight, fight.

Third on the Dawn of War side. Squad combat is innovative and awesome. The vehicles and weapons are balanced and devastating. And on top of it all, it's a highly entertaining game. The voice acting is comedic, and some of the best I've heard for a PC game.

there is a game called battle realms that is a very good and simple rts. a lot less micromanagement which i gr8 for a first game.

p.s.
i'm surprised no one has mentioned warcraft 3? i think its painfully slow and dull but still though it would be mentioned...

you really cant turtle. this makes it more beautiful than your average RTS, and if you can turtle, than your opponents just aren't imaginative enough (drop pods, orbital bombardment, or my personal favorite, send wave after wave of necrons then mass resurrect them all in their lines)

admittedly, you can turtle against bots, but its usually suicidal, unless you play tau, get enough power resource flooding in (12 generators on tier 3 power production) and you can make a never-ending stream of distraction robots (drones), and then send a team of jump infantry (commander, stealth suits, crisis) to infiltrate and blitz the base. any other race, you get bottled in, and overrun

However, after DoW2 comes out, stop playing, because there will be tyranids, and then there's no point playing, we all know who wins. Bugs4life

what was i saying? oh yeah, DoW, apart from just being pretty, it does'nt suffer from alot of problems that other RTS's have, its fast, fun and futile, because nids will eat you

Faces of War. One hell of a graphically-pleasing, intense, clever and fun WW2 squad-based RTS. A must buy, if i do say so myself!

First of all they aren't even confirmed.Second of all Tyranids = Nerf. From what I heard from some W40K fan on this forum, Tabletop Baneblade could wipe half of the battlefield in a single blast. Now compare it to that piece of crap DoW Baneblade is.

The problem with adding nids is that they'll have to boost up all the other races to match the onslaught of the nids, and it just gives someone the chance of making the necrons more stronger!
But Space Marines through and through Just spam the battle feild with orbital bombardment all the way,
"cleanse and purify"

I add my votes to the rest of the Dawn of War's. I will mention Homeworld 2 and the 'Crafts (Blizzard's franchises) as decent choices, especially Starcraft (though the ripoff of the Warhammer universe by Blizzard is astonishing).

The ex-Westwood C&C games now suck, largely, save for Generals and Emperor. So, I will recommend every C&C game from C&C1 till Tiberian Sun/Firestorm, Generals, and Emperor. Play Generals if graphics matter to you, as the other C&C games I mentioned have outdated eye-candy. I played the latest installment, Tiberian Wars, and I really didn't like it, so I can't recommend it.

Ah, the lovely operator "could". It's amazing how a single word can turn fact into fiction. While the Baneblade is a nasty piece of equipment on the tabletop, it's still restrained by the laws of reality. For example, Carnifexes. Yeah, the Baneblade drops a massive template with a single shot, but they only lose one wound if they're in synapse range. Also, baneblades are subject to the possibility of missing their target altogether.

lol comparing the tabletop game to Dawn of War is pointless; they both use different rule system. The Baneblade had to be hit by a nerf stick in order to make it fair...a fully powered baneblade is stronger than a Land Raider by far. On the flip side, the Bloodthirster got a major boost in power; It's strong, but not that strong!

It's true, the 'Nids haven't been confirmed yet, but it's pretty well certain. There's only one other army that hasn't been added yet, so barring any extremely unlikely circumstances (i.e the Squats returning for some strange reason) the 'Nids are a fair shoe-in.

In summary, WAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

If you can find it, they sell Age of Empires I and II (along with their expansions) in one disk now. Cost about $10. Really fun.
