Dawn of war

you really cant turtle. this makes it more beautiful than your average RTS, and if you can turtle, than your opponents just aren't imaginative enough (drop pods, orbital bombardment, or my personal favorite, send wave after wave of necrons then mass resurrect them all in their lines)

admittedly, you can turtle against bots, but its usually suicidal, unless you play tau, get enough power resource flooding in (12 generators on tier 3 power production) and you can make a never-ending stream of distraction robots (drones), and then send a team of jump infantry (commander, stealth suits, crisis) to infiltrate and blitz the base. any other race, you get bottled in, and overrun

However, after DoW2 comes out, stop playing, because there will be tyranids, and then there's no point playing, we all know who wins. Bugs4life

what was i saying? oh yeah, DoW, apart from just being pretty, it does'nt suffer from alot of problems that other RTS's have, its fast, fun and futile, because nids will eat you
Ahh, Almightyjoe. How your words please me. A fellow Hive Mind at heart. I can't wait to start Ripper-Rushing everything!
First of all they aren't even confirmed.Second of all Tyranids = Nerf. From what I heard from some W40K fan on this forum, Tabletop Baneblade could wipe half of the battlefield in a single blast. Now compare it to that piece of crap DoW Baneblade is.
you hurt me sir, you do indeed.

of course nids will be nerfed, but so has everything else, it is possible to deploy an entire company of space marines, and, in truth, thats about as much pwn as it is possible to get without a titan. yet warp spiders can shred lone squads in seconds.

i just love the fact that soon it will be possible to have some poor sod watching his base become overrun by a living tide of gribbly lag-out death.

also, the tabletop bane-blade is not as awesome as people imagine, it costs a bunch, and with some clever moves, cover and the right weapons, you can wipe out half an armies points without losing more than 100 or so yourself. (or, always fun, in apocalpse you borrow everyones spore models and take 50 deep-striking spore clusters, dump the acids on the blade and the frags on the guard... good times)
Almightyjoe, you have my sympathies. His hurtful anti-Nid words scarred me deep too.

My favourite is flank-marching an assault squad into the rear armor of the bugger. Melta bombs and a powerfist into armor 13 = dead baneblade. Shrike's Wing excels at this. Scout + Stealth + free melta bombs = deader baneblade!

Sunage is a recent but retro looking game which you Cannot!..turtle on.
There isn't an unlimited supply of resources either which can cause a stalemate to those who don't know strategy and decide to send hordes or one thing at the enemy.
Everything can be countered which makes the game so much fun!..
The Power System is what I love best about the game, it definitely a game worth playing.

Everything made by Relic: Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Homeworld <-Best games period.

The Star/Warcraft both classic games that are fun to play even if their 5+(I think)years old

Battle for Middle Earth is good, not mind-blowing, but you can have some fun with it.

Command & Conquer, I?ve only played it at friends houses, but I think it's good

The Total War Series (Rome, Medieval, Shogun) are excellent if you want a deep single player game and/or if you are a big history buff, like me

World in Conflict is not a true RTS but it's similar and pretty damn fun

Universe at War, haven't played but have heard lots and lots of positive reviews about.

Rise of Legends, a game that never got popular, which saddens me because it's a great game with great potential

Sorry, I was so out of it and was responding to another thread, several threads after I had moved on from it.

Please delete.

But then in tabletop you can only practicably use Baneblades in Epic or Apocalypse, so you have equivalent size armies to stand up to the firepower.

DoW is god... but yeah heavy bolter turrets and some good old flamers and yer nids are royally fecked. As for the RTS comment which started all this, i suggest Settlers 3, its so much fun to play and focuses on economy without getting boring, Empire Earth, Any Command and Conquer, Warcraft 1-3....
As for the baneblade argument... Mr. Baneblade, meet Mr. Land Raider Terminus. Now bend over and get ready to recieve :)

If there is one game that defines the RTS genre. its Warcraft 3

Any and every self-respecting tournament has to include it by default

It's amazing how easily DoW takes over conversation. I love it too but still...
Anywho, from my completely biased point of view of absolutely loathing fiddly micromanagement and base-building I can recommend Defcon. You're given your units, you deploy them and off you go, preparing to wage nuclear war on everyone around you. This game is played in a completely different mindset to typical games because of three factors.
1)Everything is extremely powerful. This game involves nukes.
2)Everything is very slow relative to its destructive power.
3)Everything is very fragile.
So the game becomes a doublethink of move and counter-move and co-ordinating massive strikes in secret and searching for your opponent's before Defcon 1. The provisos are that the community is relatively small so getting a 6 player game can be instaneous or take 10-20 minutes at worst. It's cheap though.

you must remember that flamers aren't anywhere near as powerful as they are in the tabletop game. They're only good at lowering morale. Keep the 'Nids in synapse range and their morale shouldn't drop (if they try and emulate that feature of the game, anyways). Yeah, my 'nids would be fecked if you got a lot of heavy bolters....IF being the operative word there :p

As for the Baneblade, I'd like to offer the nid-friendly solution; two lovely little words called Mycetic Assault. 5 deep-striking Carnifexes...as a SQUAD! That Baneblade's about to feel the Warhammer 40k equivalent of prison gang rape.

OMG I had completely overlooked Defcon! Yeah, it's frigging awesome too! I loved the movie WarGames, and so this game reminds me of it every time I blow up something. Who wants to play a game...called Global Thermonuclear War?!

Well, it seems all the good strats have been given the nod. Bah. So I'll throw my sticks down with the rest of the DoW crowd (only played the Sisters on SS; Tau are still my fave) and add honorable mention to Defcon. Such a good little game, as dark as it is.

Universe at War is *GREAT* and is coming out for the 360. The big worry about a console RTS is the control scheme ... the controls are (IMHO) the best controls of any console RTS yet.

you are very correct about the DoW flamers, but that lovely hellhound would just have so much fun with Nid swarms...
besides everythings fecked against a bloodthirster....

Ok not technically RTS, but for its pure scale of battles, Rome total war....
