The wii's screen pointy machanics is decent. Great for pointing and clicking. There are many game types that you would have thought would be great for this system, including shooters, point and click and rts.

Not so long ago i connected my wii remote to my pc for a bit of fun...I played age of empire with the remote and it worked great. OK i had to take some time maping out the controls and I still needed the keyboard to do some things but it esentally worked.

I dont know 100% but i think ther is something like 1 rts game on the wii and it is meh. Why can we not have CnC or something simular on the wii. I am really just thinking i like the idea of playing the old CnC games on the wii with updated graphics and an updated refined for wii gameing system, with all the old films, I recon that would sell but that is me dreaming some what.

They say RTS struggels on consols but the wii's controls could do it nicly, It has been I dont know how many years but i have yet to see any.

edit,
There are plenty of tutorials on connecting your wii remote to your pc...try it, the point and click works great although it does depend on the game...some are better than others it all depends on whether the game resisters the mouse movement or curser position, but still worth a try. all you need is the wii romote, a blue tooth connetor, the sensor bar ontop of your screen (and power for it...you will need your wii on to do it...unless you got one of those wireless ones or if you have some IR LED's lying around) and the relivent software again easy to find then map it all up and off you go.

Hmm that's an interesting thought, treat the Wii as a wireless mouse instead of a motion controller...

Intially I thought "An RTS for a console. I wouldn't work out that well." But now that you mention it the Wii's controller would be very well suited to allow you to play an RTS. The only problem being is that the Wii isn't the most powerful console, so any RTS it would run would have to be a bit simpler than what would play on other consoles.

But you do make a good point, now that I think about it.

It's a good idea. You and control from sitting on a couch. won't need a desk for the mouse. I tried RA3 on the 360, it tried hard to make it's controls easy for the controller but still was annoying. The problem with this is, Wii owners aren't into rts, and the rts made for it would have to be an exclusive(cause it would be designed for the controls and need to work on the wii's limited power). I don't anyone would create a rts game for it.

This is already being implemented in a sense, as some RTSs intend to benefit from the Playstation move's pointer functionality. It's basically the Wii-mote isn't it?

Yes, that would be great if it weren't for the hotkeys. How are you going to quickly move and micro your army around, how are you going to quickly build units and buildings. I mean it could work, but it'd be nowhere as good as the RTSs on the PC.

Actually the point and click interface of most RTS would make it ideal for the Wii. It would not be that difficult to mimic mouse controls on a Wii.

meh I dunno, I personally think it would be a mind fuck. To many bad memories from the old days with RTS console games (red alert... Starcraft for N64...)

At any rate, I might be wrong, maybe I just suck with the wiimote...

I know, I was discussing this this other day...

The main 'against' thing is that you need hotkeys etc. to be good at the game, but I honestly don't think that's the case - I rarely, if ever, use hotkeys, and I could still beat Starcraft 1.
But still are hotkeys really nessisary. You can play an RTS just using the mouse, and then to make it more advance, CTRL to bind units to 1 2 3 etc, alt for camera functions. maybe delete to kill units when you are at full copasity.
When I did Age of empires I set it out A right mouse B left, urrr Z control Y alt, and then auto select 1 2 3 and 4 to the d pad. Now that does not have to be the case, the d pad could be used for buildings, infanty, armour and air, but with a side bar where you select your units to build then it is fine...All that needs to be done is possably bigger buttons to press.
And even then Multiplayer everyone will be at the same level because everyone has the same controls not I new guy still learning the hotkeys vs veteran who knows hotkeys and order to press then for best effect.

So ye there is no reason why it would not work the only changes would be bigger interface buttons for easy selecting, urr graphics modified for optimal playing...If done write there could be no unit limits or if there has to be it could be made into the game play...like dawn of war 2 did sort of.

Units caps is not an issue all the controls you need are there it just needs to be done.

Yeah, that was one of the things talked about before the Wii's release, "it would be really good for RTS's. But none came out...

At least they can port some RTS's to it, that would be cool...

I have played Ruse on the PS3 using the motion controller and i can say that it is an awesome way to interact. kinda weird at first but once you get used to it the controls are very accurate and fun however they don't quite live up to the mouse and keyboard for speed (but pretty close). the only real shortfall is hotkeys but even thats not a big deal considering a die-hard RTS fan that plays at that level already has his beefed up computer and gaming keyboard with extra 20 keys for binding*.

*that is not to say you have to be obsessed to use hotkeys, i quite miss not having unit teams binded to my number keys but i can make due without and so can you unless you actually use them for unit production, map anchors, special abilities, research, etc...
