Oblivion stands as my favorite game of all time... I wouldn't mind some private online action like fable II has, but not a mmo.

This is really disappointing. I loved Oblivion - easily one of my favorite games of the gen and of all time - and a lot of that stemmed from the world I totally immersed myself into. An MMO is not what I'd want from this.

Really, just make ES V. The only multiplayer I ever wanted was maybe PvP in the arena (you can go there and look for 1v1 fights) or being able to go dungeon crawling with a friend. Either of those things could be fun and enough multiplayer...

I agree - MMO profits look nice, but nobody wants another one.

EDIT: Well I really only recently jumped aboard the ES ship, so I suppose if this happens I'll just go back and play Morrowind. I've been wanting to play that and allow myself to put that soundtrack on my iPod along with the Oblivion one.

Guess Oblivion was so terrible that they decided to just go ahead, take the next step, and ruin the Elder Scrolls series forever.
This. I suppose they still have the 'oh, that looks pretty' aspect to go off of, oh crap...

Elder Scrolls 6... in 3D!!!!

Sigh. I was really hoping Bethesda would stick to singleplayer, rather than hopping on to the MMO bandwagon.
Ah well, looks like I'll just have to wait until TES VI then.

Nononononononononononononononooooooooooooooooooo! Nobody wants an Elder Scrolls MMO, It will ruin it!
I love those games because they have a fantastic singleplayer, I don't want any group of kids to come and destroy my atmospheric dungeon-adventurer mood.

Of all the studios making an MMO, I wouldn't touch a Bethesda one with a stick.

I hope this is just a rumour and nothing more, or at least a separate product from other games. Fallout 3 showed they're capable of making very good games and supporting them with great post-release content, and I hope they're going to capitalise on that rather than squander it.

To everyone complaining about how much the MMO will ruin the franchise: THIS WILL NOT BE ES:V! ZENIMAX MEDIA ONLINE MAKE MMOS! BETHESDA GAME STUDIOS MAKE SINGLE PLAYER RPGS! THESE ARE DIFFERENT BRANCHES OF THE COMPANY! For the record, the only reason I went all caps was to try to help my chances of this being seen.

Well, I was hoping the normally intelligent Escapist wasn't going to participate in this GI-sanctioned whitewash, but alas. No, the MMO would be handled by ZOS, not BGS. That is assured. Don't mislead people with this stuff; we know that BGS will not make an MMO, that's ZOS's job. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! (Did I get my point across?)

Also, 2012 FO4 release? Wow, you guys are slipping on content checking and assumptions. The consensus at the Bethesda forums is that we will have TESV by holiday 2011, and FO4 by holiday 2013 to mid-2014

If it allows mods then it could make for quite an interesting MMO. On the other hand it could just mean they might be doing something like Demon Souls or Fable II with the pseudo multiplayer. That wouldn't be so bad.

I'm really glad everyone thinks this is a terrible idea. Bethesda, your fanbase loves huge single player RPG's. Do you really think this audience wants a WOW clone?

MMO's and classic RPG's may seem related, but in fact they are precise opposites, with the former containing herd people herding, and the later containing rugged individualists living out their narcissistic fantasies.

Oh well, there's still NetHack I guess :)

Very disappointing if this turns out to be true.

Though in the unlikely event they follow an MMO format akin to Guild Wars where the entire game can be played single player and for no monthly fee...then I'll buy it.
