Rumor: Contract Dispute Halted Prey 2 Development

Word on the street is that Human Head hasn't worked on Prey 2 since November.

Yesterday's announcement of a Prey 2 delay [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116849-Prey-2-Lives-On] was interesting because it was essentially an admission that the game, as it stands, really sucks. "Development has not progressed satisfactorily" may be politically smooth but the sentiment behind it is unmistakable: this ain't good. But how did the situation become so dire in the first place?

The rumor is that Human Head Studios actually put the brakes on development all the way back in November 2011. An anonymous Shacknews [http://www.shacknews.com/article/73417/source-human-head-hasnt-worked-on-prey-2-since-november] source says the studio effectively went on strike to try to force a renegotiation of its contract with ZeniMax; developers were laid off with the assumption that they'd be rehired if and when Human Head got better contract terms and resumed work on the game, which seemed to be where things were headed until January, when responses from ZeniMax suddenly dried up.

Things had apparently progressed a little bit as of March 1 but then "quickly soured the following day," although the source has no first-hand details about what exactly what down or what's happened since. ZeniMax, naturally, declined comment, but it's hard to miss the fact that nowhere in the statement about the delay is Human Head mentioned by name.

If development really has been dead in the water for the past six months, it's no wonder the game hasn't progressed to satisfactory levels. It also seems quite possible, given the heavy-handed statement, that Human Head overplayed its hand and ZeniMax is now looking for another studio to take over the game as it did with Rogue Warrior, but if so, we can only hope that the results will be better. The redone Rogue Warrior was nothing short of a disaster [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/rogue-warrior] when it finally came out.

Ouch. Well, here's hoping things smooth out between Human Head and ZeniMax so that Prey 2 doesn't suffer the same way Rogue Warrior did. The last thing anyone wants is for Prey 2 to end up sucking, not with what's been shown so far...

I really hope all this gets cleared up and the game doesn't get handed off to another studio. From what Human Head has shown, this game looks like it'll be pretty sweet. It'd be a damn shame if it ended up getting the Rouge Warrior treatment.

Well, lets see.

The dev team began by taking the ONLY non-racist native american character in video game history and writing him out of a story that was literally all about him, destroying the cliffhanger epilogue at the end of the last game, replacing him with Generic White Male Space Mareeen in an attempt to rip off, from all indications, Boba Fett.

I suspect that the spirit of the last game is reaching out into This World and strangling this project for the good of mankind.

Either that or everyone associated with this project has their head up their own ass.

Quelle.
Haha, merci! Keeping track of my masculine/feminine accords was never my strong point in highschool French. With Google Translate I've really got no excuse though >_<

Still they have a few more years of delays before it gets nearly close to Prey's develpment problems.

US Marshals are space marines now? I'm going to have to watch The Fugitive again.

Hmm, I was actually quite excited when news of this first game first broke, aspects reminded me of Judge Dredd. Well here's hoping it gets mopped up soon. I'd rather they got the original team back, spent another year on it and made a good game than the more likely alternate where this just gets passed on to a bunch of ass-backwards mouth breathers who fuck up the whole project and fart it back at us within five months.

I'm saddened too. I was looking forward to finding out what happens to Tommy. That game was great and the story had me wanting to know what happens next. Once they changed it I was all aboard the hate this game train. If it ain't broke....

My brother works of Human Head, and I knew this news a long time ago. There is a lot bad blood between ZeniMax and Human Head, what I hear is that the publisher is trying to squeeze the developer, keep moving the goal post to find ways to say that Human Head is falling behind so they can refuse payment. Then ZeniMax tries to go to the cash strapped owners individually and offer to buy out the company from them.

Of course this is the only one side's story, maybe the game does suck and ZeniMax was right to do what they did, but since it's my brother saying these things I will believe him.

Tommy is still in the game; in fact he's central character just not the player character. Check some of the dev videos. Someone actually asked about Tommy and they said he'd was in the game.
