So the word is (and I may be wrong about this) that a new GTA will finally be announced at E3 for launch in Spring 2012. What are you hoping to see/hear about it?

For me, San Andreas was one of my all time favorites and gta4, not so much. So I guess I would like to see another retro outing with a massive sandbox and a ton of toys and customization from clothes down to tats. I wouldn?t mind hearing the return of Master Sounds either. That station rocked.
Oh yea, and it can?t take itself too seriously. Whenever R* tries to make me cry they just end up making me laugh.

I want to see a GTA that's set in the future. Imagine GTA crossed with The Fifth Element. Flying car jacking!

I want Vice City again. Set in the 80's, again. I want a fully realized Miami clone chock full of the same neon atmosphere of the original VC.

Or if not, set in an Asian city like Hong Kong or Tokyo.

Put it in Brazil and make it like San Andreas with a city representing Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo with the country side in between.

I want it to be in a European city. But...just especially not in New York or LA. And switch up the standard sandbox gameplay. The genre really needs some innovation.

That's an awesome idea. It needs to happen!

My idea would have to be London again, they haven't done that since the ol' top down days.
It would be good to see that done properly and in full of the new style and on the new consoles.

If not London, then definitely a non-American city. We need some variety in the series.

More serious and meaningful direction. Option for pacifist playthrough as there's a writing/gameplay dissonance when you've killed hundreds of people and still act like a nice guy. Dialogue options and a more dynamic plot, more of an rpg. More radio station chat shows, music is good but it's not as engaging intellectually. A strong focus on social commentary, particularly more on politics as games rarely do that. Another in game internet but with more of a focus on interactivity than reading. To start a family for once in a serious completing game. Rockstar games usually try to be a bit original. Each one has a unique setting and era. Liberty city gets reused a lot but they change the era. La Noire is 1950s LA, different from san andreas. Bully was a school. Red Dead Redemption early 1900s wild west. Even midnight club and manhunt have interesting cultural settings. I guess they've kinda encapsulated the entire last century of american culture with their game library (a completely unparalleled feat in the game industry), and the next one doesn't really have anywhere to go. I'd hate if they went way in the past. And they're not going to go into the future because their games are all about representing the era and setting artistically. I guess they'll just do another modern one like gtaiv. It's the best era really as you have technology like the mobile phone, radio stations (big miss in RDR & LA Noire), internet, etc. I think there'll be a lot of complaints it's not original enough if they just remake San Andreas, but they can't set it anywhere else. It has to be English speaking because GTA is most popular in English speaking countries. And they have to have legal guns for the crime aspect. Actually, no they don't. They should set it in London and not focus on violence. Go the heavy rain route and make it more narratively engaging, and have nonviolent gameplay in minigames and other things. Time for the industry to mature and move beyond mindless violence. If it's 1/2 as good as GTAIV it will be game of the year, even if it's not in an original setting or era for the first time.

I would be interested in more emphasis on internal custom characterization, like a dialog tree from Mass Effect or Alpha Protocol. Depending on who you're working for at the time, you could alter your discussions to match what that personality type is looking for in a soldier, and thus be granted with more information about each mission. It would be kind of like in Assassin's Creed except it would take place through conversation rather than faffing about for 50 minutes repeating the same three side quests. It would also kind of be like in Indigo Prophecy when interviewing the waitress at the beginning of the game, what questions you choose to ask will garnish you different results, with a proper string of questions that gives you the best ending.

This same mechanic could be used in other areas of the game, like if you were arrested by the cops, you'd be put in an interrogation room and depending on how well you do during the interrogation would alter the repercussions. If you did phenomenally well you were released and all of your items would be returned to you (yes it's not the most realistic depiction, but this is the GTA universe), or if you completely failed you'd be booked and loose a couple of in-game days which could result in mission failures, missed connections, suspicion from bosses, and a whole lot of other consequences that could affect your game.

I was one of the weirdos who actually really enjoyed the character bonding moments in GTA4 where someone would call you up and you'd go out and do something. I felt that it helped with the immersion of the game as well as fleshing out the character's back story and helping them become more memorable. I remember when I had to choose between killing Francis or Gerry McReary and I was actually worried that if I made the wrong choice, that Kate and Packie McReary would not want to have anything to do with me anymore. I found it quite amazing that a game like GTA4 actually had me caring about NPC's, when in most GTA games, the NPC's either die, betray you, or just disappear from your world.

Finally I think one of the big changes that would be interesting for the next GTA installment would be combining the game world during in between mission sandbox mode and mission mode. Blur those lines a little bit to allow players multiple options to completing missions rather than just gunning down everybody in opposition. Perhaps there's a character who needs to be killed and he likes to frequent restaurants in one particular section of town at the same time every day, you could then go around to the various restaurants and either:

A) Survey the place to look for openings
B) Bribe the owner to leave the back door unlocked, allowing you to bypass the target's security.
C) Go in gun's a blazing
D) Create a rapport with the target, convince him to leave (Much like what you could do in GTA4)

Essentially it would be nice to be given a mission, but given a wider time frame in order to accomplish it, to allow the player multiple paths to do it.

Basically all in all I'd like to see more RPG elements attached to the series because I think there is some potential for true greatness that GTA4 hinted at but never really fully delivered. My ideas would definitely drown out a lot of the rampage action, but I think if handled right there could be a lot of depth added to the series and allow it to give the players a more personal experience to the criminal underground, much like how The Wire did for television.

Now this entirely depends on the direction that Rockstar are taking this series. If they're going to deliver more GTAIV then I couldn't give a damn where they set it, I likely won't play it (this isn't flamebait nor an invite to contest me, other games were already doing what GTAIV tried to do and did it better). On the other hand if they're going to return to what they did best; frantic and fun gameplay, nonsense, nonserious stories with unforgettable larger than life characters and constantly poking fun of pop culture of the setting then you can count me in.

They need to revisit Vice City! Not only for the thoroughly beautiful city it was; but also because more 80's is never a bad thing. Plus it would be interesting to see the transition from late 80's to early 90's. Also how can you like Tommy Vercetti?

Quite honestly if Rockstar want to take their games in a serious direction why do they have to do it with Grand Theft Auto? The series that stood as an antithesis of such games? Grand Theft Auto doesn't need convoluted over-arching plots and character twists; it doesn't need complex dialogue trees and mechanics. It was always all about the fun!

Give me a character like Tommy Vercetti again, best leading character they've made, I did like Niko and C.J., but not nearly as much as Tommy.

GTA: Tokyo would be cool. Maybe not the best time in the world right now though.

Make it more accessible? GTA never appealed to me aside from spending 10 minutes going on shooting sprees and then throwing the game out.

I imagine it will be set in Vice City, just think their gonna do what they did with the PS2 ones - LC, VC, then SA.

I would like a bit more whacky fun, Ballad of Gay Tony kind of gave us some more of this. The realism in GTA 4 was cool, but more whacky stuff would be more awesome.
