He should have stayed and done the job for less money than he deserves? And what is with people insisting he needs a starring role, and a ton of screen time. I, for on, didn't even realize he was in Kingdom of Heaven until I saw the credit. He's played plenty of smaller roles.
Yes; he's being paid to act. If he wanted more money, he could go on to do another project after this that pays more. It's not like the guy is blacklisted, or anything (as far as I know, that is). No one is forcing him to be in movies against his will. As for the matter of small roles; the guy is an exceptional actor who knows how to choose a good script. And I'm not convinced that he tries to edit the movies for more screen time. I may call him a primadonna, but that's just stupid.

Have you also considered the possibility that Marvel wanted Norton to have a starring role in the Avengers but didn't want to give him starring pay? Because I would think that's a definite possibility. Bruce Banner usually plays a pretty significant role especially if they are going to draw from The Ultimates story line, which I think would be a good bet.
If it were a monetary reason, then it would have been stated as such. I won't try to debate that the Avengers is going the Ultimates route. But I will say that I highly believe it will reflect more of the mainstream Avengers than the Ultimates. Everything that Marvel Studios has done shows that their aiming more toward the mainstream way, with the exception of the rebooting-Hulk-origins.

There is also the possibility he just didn't have confidence in the film. No doubt it will be successful, but Joss Whedon is directing it so... yeah.
So, we blame the director, huh? The same guy who has a successful run in comics and television? While I'm not really familiar with Whedon, other than Firefly and Serenity, I'm confident he won't mess up The Avengers. And it would just prove to everyone what a primadonna Norton is for not wanting work with a director he feels isn't up to par.
