Regardless if the Wii U turns out to smash more hardware barriers than the 360 and PS3 combined and offers players everything functionality-wise from the PC to a home theater system and ushers in a new order of world peace, playing Zelda, Super Mario and Metroid in Hi-definition ain't going to move me from my PC throne.

Good for Nintendo, but I really fear that the Wii U is shaping up to become the Dreamcast of this generation - start off with a great bang, with shiny specs, cool games and first on the shelves, but then clobbered to death by late-coming but significantly more powerful and more capable machines designed for the next generation.

Nintendo shouldn't be looking to beat the current generation of consoles - they've already done that. Squarely. Theres no denying that, in terms of consoles shifted, the Wii has obliterated its competition.

What they should be doing, instead of saying "hey look we have HD graphics like the PS3/360 now!" is producing a console thats specifically designed to combat the PS4/Xbox720. Its a next gen console taking on current gen consoles - and it'll lose later on badly for it, unless it turns out the Wii U is merely a stop gap to properly contend with the current generation and theres already a new console in the works to take on the next generation of consoles (in which case Nintendo has taken an unprecedented move and risk in such a method, and I highly doubt this is the case!)
Risk is Nintendo's middle name.
Its also been its downfall on more than one occasion.
Virtua Boy and Gamecube?
Amongst others that I'm sure Nintendo would rather we forgot...

If yes: No surprise considering the PS3 is 5 years old.

If no: No surprise, it is Nintendo we're talking about here.

Seriously though, I hope it is to be honest, with the sheer scale of advancement in processing power made between 2006 and now, the Wii U MUST be more powerful.

I'm glad to see the Wii U uses HD. I hope this rumour is true, and the Wii U isn't just a Wii with a different case, functions and port, like the Gamecube to the Wii.

EDIT: Darn, forgot to do research like I usually do.

Well yea, but it stagnates if no risks are taken.
I'm sure sony and microsoft would be content with taking no risks if nintendo was out of the picture.

I call bullshit. Granted, it's been 5 years since, but more than a PS3 CELL processor?

Technically it's been more than five years. Do you really think that hardware wasn't created until right before they actually released it? It was probably being developed for at least a year, probably two or three, before the PS3 was actually released.

EDIT: According to Wikipedia (However credible that can be considered), the Cell microprocessor architecture that was eventually used in the PS3 began development in 2001. So...the base technology for the PS3 processor is apparently ten years old.

I think that it can only be proved later down the road when the wii u reaches it's full potential. If what were getting from the demonstrations is true then were getting something that looks as good as the competition right away then we won't see if this is true until maybe a year or two into it's life cycle. If you look at the early games of this generation you can see how far we've come from then.

Modern gaming PCs are anywhere between four to eight times more powerful than the PS3, so it's no surprise that Nintendo could release a console slightly more powerful than the PS3 at a low cost.

But if they were looking to reclaim the gamer base they lost with the casualness of the Wii, then they're way late. Microsoft is likely to announce their next console with DirectX 11-level hardware at next year's E3, and Sony surely won't be far behind.
Direct X 11?
I'm still using Direct X 8 on my 2006 PC.

well this might sound good, but if the rumours of microsoft and sony preparing for e3 3012 with their new consoles, i think the wiiu might have some problems, but then again with the wiis sales almost double that of the xbox or the ps3 maybe they wont. i bet if the wiiu comes out before e3 than sony and microsoft are planning to showcase their new models.

And still way less powerful then an average PC. I do hope this forces Microsoft and Sony to speed up their production of their new Consoles. One can only hope.
According to a kotaku article (which I can't be arsed to find) there are rumors that microsoft will announce the new xbox at next year's E3. Of course this doesn't mean it'll be released any time soon, but it would mean that they're at least partially done making it.

Eh we don't know it would be probably for the better.
Graphics are plateauing after all and it's more about the style after all.

Game Watchreports that the Wii U's GPU is based on the AMD Radeon HD 4000 family line of products, which are designed around the RV770 foundation chip. This family of AMD processors saw commercial release in the PC market in 2008 and 2009. The GPU that AMD supplied for the XBox 360 has similarities to the Radeon HD 2000 line of computer graphics cards.

Assuming that none of the Radeon HD 4000 functionality was removed from the custom Wii U chip, the Wii U GPU may support Shader Model 4.1. In comparison, the XBox 360 and PS3 capabilities are at the Shader Model 3.0 level. AMD currently manufactures the Radeon HD 6000 line, featuring Shader Model 5.0.

The Wii U GPU could feature integrated Hardware tessellation that will help it smooth out rough edges on 3D models. Game Watch noted the sharp polygon edges in Nintendo's "Japanese Garden Demo" and therefore doubted the use of a tessellation stage in the tech demo.

While there is plenty of speculation on the features that the Wii U graphics chip might have, AMD has not yet released information on the GPU's clock speed, number of shader units, memory bandwidth, and other specs. These details, and other as-of-yet unknown customizations to the Wii U GPU, are also important factors in the GPU's overall performance.

Ty for telling me this, at least it means they are moving forward, even if it is slow xD
