Nintendo: We'll make it better, stronger, faster, but we don't have enough left for the graphics proccessor after the controller, so we'll go with something outdated.

In Nintendo's defense, it may have weak graphics when compared to the "PS4" and "XBox 720", but the Wii was weaker then the Xbox and PS3 and it look how that turned out.

It just needs to ride a good gimmic and good price, and it'll probably hold its own, despite sub-par graphics when compared to Microsoft and Sony's 8th gen console.

Not to mention it'll have a year or two of no comeptition, except from the 360 and PS3.

And what makes you think it can compete with them?
By 2012, it's gone to be a rare site to see someone who wants a 360/PS3 and has the money to get them, not owning one.

Now then, add that and the fact that it's a new game console, "new" tends to draw in attention more then 6 years old game consoles.

Adding in that it's Nintendo and they have a huge fandom, who'll probably drool over the concept of a Zelda game that makes Twilight Princess look really outdated, thrown in with the gimmic of the console might be good enough to get some heads turned. Bam~

Yeah, people will have a Ps3 or a 360 already, so why would they want or need to get a n ew home console? Whats the new Nintendo console do our Ps3 and 360's haven't been doing for years?

Not to mention that the Ps3 and 360 will have their current install bases, while the new console doesn't have one. What third party's gonna wanna deveop for that?
You know, you're right. No wonder the PS3 could sale a single version, the PS2 was obviously owned by plenty, so why would they need another console?

I'm sure no one owns a PS3. (sarcasam)

What's will it do? Only God and Nintendo knows.

Will it do something amazing and pull a Wii and crush its competition in sales? Maybe, maybe not. Who can say at this early a stage.

But here's the thing. Take away a the 3D and what's the 3DS? A DS with better graphics. And yet, it sold very well, despite plenty of people already owning a DS.

Now you can argue that the ''3D'' did that, but then... why can't Nintendo's new console have a gimmic with the same results?

It's why we all buy new consoles, because new graphics, new games and new capabilities will soon make older consoles obsolete.

Why did the SNES sale? Everyone already owned an NES. Because it had a more powerful graphics proccessor.

Right now, it's still speculation with no true evidence. Hell, the thing could come out making the XBox 360 look like a joke, graphics wise.

Great. More Mario, Sonic and Wiisports with slightly nicer graphics to look forward to
This.

Why is Nintendo so afraid to grow up and get into the serious hardware?

Oh wait...

Geeze. Why is the escapist reporting completely unverifiable rumours that exist without the slightest bit of evidence?

For that matter, why are we even bothering to discuss it?

Real news, please.

Ah, there's a difference. With the Ps2, as opposed to this, there was a jump in quality, not Nintendo finally catching up to where the Ps3 and 360 have been all this time. This is offering the same thing (same level of power, not a higher one) we've already got with the Ps3 and 360, but with a higher price, no library and less install base.

This also isn't *new*. This is *5 years old, but new for Nintendo*. These are old graphics, old games and old capabilities, just new for Nintendo.

You know what? I don't give a damn. I merely stated that there's a chance it might sale.

Really, this has been a waste of time. Nothing I say or do will change your mind, and I don't care who's right or wrong.

Fine, Nintendo's console will fail, Nintendo will go bankrupt, you win. Happy? I shouldn't need to have to keep responding to why I think a console from Nintendo could still sale, despite the existence of PS3 and Xbox 360.

Regarding the controller:

Because this was Nintendo: OM GIMMICK NINTENDO SUCKS AND IS FOR CASUALS!

If this was Son/Microsoft: You know what, that sounds pretty cool, I might try it!

If it was somehow for the PC: OMG VISIONARIES! THEY'RE GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZE GAMING!
No, it is stupid anyway you look at it. I'm mad that a new controller this gen runs me 50$. What will this behemoth cost me? 100$? No thanks. And a touchscreen on a controller sounds very stupid. I like Sony's. It slowly evolved over the years, but is still something I can easily use. The 360 controller is hit and miss with me. Please don't put opinions in my mouth.

Ok, two things: 1, I agree, controllers are too damn expensive.

2: The main point I was making is that if this were for any other console, or the PC, people would have been a little more speculative, or willing, at least going "well, we can still wait until we see a picture" or something along those lines. Since it's Nintendo, the automatic response is "BOO! HISS! GIMMICK!", which is bad considering

A: We don't know what it would look like. Go back ten years, and would people think two analog sticks, four face buttons, a start and select, a d-pad, four shoulder buttons and a button in the center sounds like a good controller without seeing it?
B: All things considered, this wounds like a fake leak anyway. I will keep speculating until I actually see a picture, leaving the Escapist community to cry "GIMMICK!" all the way to E3...

In other news studies suggest grass is predominately green, and water is wet? Stay tuned.

But yeah this is like saying that the PS3 will be more powerful than the original Xbox, as if we're going to be shocked about it.

Project Cafe sounds like a group of modders who gather to create Hot Coffee-esque mods.

Anyone else think a six-inch HD screen is kind of pointless? Not in function, it's the small details that HD presents are kind of lost on a small screen anyway. Chances are a six inch SD screen would work just as well for lower cost and minimal loss of quality due to screen size.

My first post!! Wow, I was a bit taken aback by how much hate there was towards Nintendo on this site!
Anyway, there have been many comments on this thread about the lack of power the Wii 2 will have (according to rumours).
My thoughts:

1.CPU
The specs say triple core IBM CPU. The 360 had heavily scaled down PPC970 cores, the Wii 2 could have 970 cores that are scaled down far less or not scaled down at all. Throw in the less restricted clock speed (3.5ghz as opposed to 3.2ghz) and you could quite easily be talking about a CPU that is more than twice as fast/powerful.

2. GPU
The rumoured figures would already put the Wii2 GPU ahead of the competition, but that is based on off the shelf performance figures. Chances are that if the Wii 2 does indeed carry an R700 it will incorporate features from the R800 much like the XBOX 360 R500 based processor had features from the 600 range. Expect the Wii 2 processor to be closer to the R800 (R750 perhaps).

3.RAM
A massive bitching point!! Most threads I've read have had huge opposites of opinion: 512mg is fine vs Nintendo are crap because they are only putting 512mg ram in.
The way I read the leaked specs was "triple core IBM CPU, R700 based GPU with 512mg of ram. That would suggest to me that the GPU alone carries 512mg ram and the overall system ram is yet to be leaked.

That doesn't sound too bad to me, and would be a huge step over the PS3 and 360.

By the way, great thread despite the obvious Nintendo haters and the dude who keeps trying to argue that the PS3 can match a high end PC on graphics!

I think it would be more dignified to call it the Gamecube 2 and keep the Wii as its own thing.

It may be pointless in relating to the console's capability itself but a good name can give it a good image. For me calling it a successor to the Gamecube would just make it look better.
