Yes, again! Another rumour about HL3. At least now we know that it probably has been through a few iterations and probably that's the reason of the delay.

It's probably going to be an open world game, which is not that surprising considering HL2 - Ep. 2 Already had some open world exploration gameplay on it.

Here is the story:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/09/20/is-half-life-3-open-world-and-coming-after-2013

What is your opinion? I know that every Half-Life 3 seems like a bad joke now, but this could have some truth to it.

I hate ninjas. I really do.
Seriously, where's a can of ninja spray when you need one?

OT: I have conflicting feelings over this news. First, it's likely to be just another hoax; we've got so many false leads relating to Half Life 3 that any news relating to it that's NOT official is probably hogwash.

But if the news is legit (and probably not), I'm still going to be cautiously optimistic. Yeah, it's Valve, the most trustworthy game company I know so far, but I don't know how Half Life can be pulled off as an RPG-style sandbox game. It was always a linear shooter with a formula that's been proven to work, and while I guess the development time may mean more drastic changes to the formula, it's hard to picture the game with the same mechanics as Skyrim and the like; especially when Gordon Freeman's a silent character.

Then again, it's Valve.

Would be very surprised if HL3 was open world, considering it would be deviating from what has made the series so great for so long. I don't want any Skyrim in my Half Life.

Well, it has to be released at some point... Doesn't it?? What better timing than when next-gen consoles are released? So 2014 sounds likely.

About it being open world it seems likely, but the whole quest stuff is strange. Well, I guess we have to wait as ever... And keep on waiting...

Ya that's totally believable, apart from the fact Source doesn't support open world and it's a complete 180° from all the games Valve makes, especially Half Life.
I bet it will also be a free to play MMO and iOS exclusive, oh oh and Gordon will be voiced by JayZ and instead of shooting you will be doing turn based QTE rap battles.

Wow... that was like being told by a doctor you have uncurable cancer of the AIDS on your prostate from Super-Mega herpes.

OT: As already said there's just so much wrong with this... (first being this is coming from IGN) and even if it was true... ahhh screw it, it's not going to happen.

Newell and his legion wouldn't allow it.

Who spreads these stupid rumours i will never know. Half Life with open world gameplay? In a series that has come to be known by its strong narrative structure? In a sequal that is supposed to have an urgent conflict that is supposed t be resolved fast? Only people that would believe in this are the ones that haven't played the games in the first place and that is not a very profitable demographic. It doesn't make sense in so many levels.

Episode 2 didn't have any open world exploration. Some slightly larger, less linear areas than usual for HL, but nothing that qualifies as open world.

As for this rumour: it's about as useful as any other. Have a good laugh then move on, because I would bet money that none of it is true.

"Rumour: Half-Life 3 coming in the next few years?" I laughed a bit.
Also I don't believe the rumors and think it is always a bad idea to change core principles of gameplay in a series.

I think there's something we can all take away from here... And that's "Valve cannot count to 3".

Marc Laidlaw:
"Keep in mind that there are people on the internet claiming to be me, and a number of posts purportedly by sources at Valve (including emails such as this one) are forged and propagated for someone's amusement. This is what I refer to as the community trolling itself."

Nothing to see here IMO.

Something tells me this is appropriate. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/9818-The-Anonymous-Source]

But yeah, this is just more hype building up over nothing, yet again. Of course Half Life 3 will come out within "the next few years". That doesn't exactly narrow it down much. That is of course assuming HL3 is actually coming. I think it's kind of common sense that if it is coming it'll be coming within "the next few years".

As for the open world part, I doubt it. That's not what Half Life is about. And even if it is true then it'll just be a coincidence. This isn't a real source.

Half life open world? that would be STUPID! so stupid it would blow my mind and become smart and be a day one purchase for me because I would charge the local gamestore so fast frothing at the mouth running on all fours when I forget I could just drive there but am too far gone in my quest to get HL3 to realize that.

This is where the rumor lost credibility. I don't know what parts of HL2 Episode 2 you seem to think were "open world," but linearity is the bread and butter of the Half-Life series, ever since the first game. Yes there are little side-paths and nooks and crannies you can explore, but that doesn't make it open-world. That is just Valve giving you as a player some little maguffins to find along the way, and slowing down the pace when it's appropriate. Because that is one of the big things that make the Half-Life games so great--pace. A fully open-world setup would ruin that sense of dramatic pace that made the series famous and that keeps bringing players back.

I have no doubt Valve is working on HL3, they have no reason not to be. It's their flagship franchise, and they're not in any sort of financial trouble like the people who were working on Duke Nukem for so long. And I feel like it is coming sooner rather than later, but I don't think this rumor deserves any credit.

There have been thousands of rumors regarding it coming out, and they've all been false.
Do you have a credible source?

^Yep. Move along.

Noone ever left the Episode 3 team. The current story arc must first be finished before HL3. And a hl2 or better quality game being released in the next few years? (Let's say 2-3 years from now?) Hell naw.

Baseless rumors don't really make a great thread.
When people refer to HL3, they are talking about the same game you are. HL2 Episode 3. Nobody is asking for or expecting a game that doesn't finish the current story arc. They've just moved on to calling it HL3 because after so many years, Valve had better give us more than a measly 6-8 hour episode.
