How difficult is it? I mean that in a strictly technical sense. I'd like to set one up (nothing amazing, just messing about with a few friends), but my computer's pretty shit. Would this be a major issue? How good would one's PC have to be for it to be feasible?

I am beginning to wonder this too as I have wanted to run MP with a friend, possibly two but I don't want to play on a server with a whole buttload of other people. However, like you, my computer isn't getting along too well these days. If it doesn't require much for just a couple of people, then I am good. But if it does, it is best not to.

It took no effort for me to make it work, but my computer runs quite well. Run the server executable, forward the necessary ports, and you're done.

I think it is 1GB of ram for 12 (or 24) people, the rest is up to your ping and upload speed.

www.speedtest.net (You want about 50-60ms ping and Mb's of upload speed). If you want about 100 people on a server, you will need a REALLY stable connection, if you want 24 people on your server, not so much trouble.

I have 1GB of RAM, but that's all. 34ms ping and 1.02 Mb/s upload speed. Looks barely acceptable from here (bearing in mind I'm looking at about four people at most).

The only difficult thing in getting a server running is figuring out port forwarding (assuming you're using a router with your internet connection).

It is really quite simple.
The biggest problem I had was forwarding the ports >.>
But then, that turned out to be really easy, and I was just panicking >.>
Although, not sure how the... specifications... of your computer would stand up to running a server.
And your internet connection/speed will also be important.

If you want a small group, you won't need too much RAM. However to try to run the server on a different computer you are playing on, or else you could easily get memory usage issues between running the server and running the game and cause an immense amount of lag.

That connection is fine for four people. Get the minecraft server exe file and you can run it fine :)

You need to get your friends to connect to you, either set up a static IP and port forward or get a program called "Hamachi" and have you friends connect to that IP instead.

Depends. If you have a good computer, you shouldn't have a problem. If you have a shit computer, try to have a different shit computer run the server for you. (Like if you have a family computer nobody uses or something have that run the server, and use your lame one to play it.) It'll work on your computer even if its bad, but for best quality its best not to try both running the server and playing it on the same machine if you can avoid it.

Try this guide, I know it says Alpha, but it works for Beta too. I followed this guide and had my server up in a matter of hours.

I run a server for 4-5 people on my computer while I play on it as well, and the server only makes it a little laggier. My computer runs Windows 7, 4GB RAM, 2.00Ghz, with an intergrated (crappy) graphics card. I'm amazed by how low the server requirements are. I would recommend running the server on a separate, older computer, but if you can't, and your computer is under 1-2 years old, you should be fine.
