Hello and welcome to another RWBY review where our tonal whiplashes are so strong, they set gas on fire [http://youtu.be/ry6w4-pBnUI?t=6m10s] in Field Trip [http://roosterteeth.com/archive/?id=9728]

Anyway we start with a mellow scene where Ironwood, Ozpin, and Glenda bring Ruby up to talk about the night before when she confronted Cinder. She basically confirms that it was the same person Glenda and Ruby fought in the first episode and Ruby also lets slip that Torchwick has a hideout in the Southeast of the kinddom. After that, The three teachers start talking and we get an establishment between Ozpin and Ironwood: Ironwood is blunt and militaristic, wanting to end the issue with a massive force while Ozpin wants to take it slow and send a scout first.

Now I mentioned a tonal whiplash. Well, Ruby meets back up with the team and Yang says that they got a package from home. It turns out to be their dog and we get overexcitment and even Weiss succumbs to cuteness proximity [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CutenessProximity]; Blake for the record is basically hiding on a top "bunk", posed like a scared cat(first lasers, now this. you do realize some cats are actually fine with dogs). Ruby then decides, in a masterstroke of planning, to bring the dog with her by shoving it into her backpack.

I,I,I, what, I, what on, who the,

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS, WHY ARE WE ADDING AN ANIMAL MASCOT THAT LOOKS LIKE A MONOCHROME VERSION OF EIN FROM COWBOY BEBOP, HOW DO YOU SEND A DOG THROUGH THE MAIL.

Okay, calming down and time to discuss. This is stupid on so many levels. One, why do we need a dog in the show: is it for cheap drama and suspense or cheap cuteness. Two, who thought it was a good idea to take a dog with you on a field trip that will likely be dangerous; for that matter, how do you even send a dog through the mail.

This is stupid, stupid stupid stupid

Okay, so, we are informed that the field trip involves the teams shadowing another huntsmen to learn about their duties. Team RWBY decides to take a mission in the southeast but they are denied due to "excessive grimm concentrations" right as Ozpin walks in. Ozpin starts questining the team about why they want the southeast (cue the rest of the team glaring at Ruby and Ruby herself doing the hahhahah, thing). Ozpin plays coy about the whole thing in a sequence that is admittedly rather amusing and hacks the system to let them go on the mission to the southeast all the while stating that they will be put to the test and sent back to Beacon if they are not good enough. anyway Team CFVY appears in a pointless bit part to scare the team further; what a waste of a design contest. To add to team RWBY's issues, it turns out the huntsman they are shadowing is the green haired professor from the start of the bully arc and their reactions range from shocked looks to anime wide white eyes to depressed blue lines. I already used the nostalgia critic clip, I didn't think I had to use it again.

Also, another reappearing clip

THIS EPISODE SUUUUUUUUUUCKS, NO, EVEN WORSE THAN THAT. ITS LIKE EVERY BIT OF INCOMPETENT WRITING POSSIBLE HAPPENED IN 10 MINUTES.

The tonal whiplash between serious and goofy comes right across the face like a bullet, the set up for how dangerous it is is somewhat trite and wasteful of CFVY's admittedly interesting designs. the whole thing was one of the most wasteful bits of data I've ever seen and I've heard the goddamn Anaconda song

P.S. if it sounds too much like a web show script, it's because I watch too much Linkara and Nostalgia Critic so my apologies but this thing just broke me.

edit: Oh dear lord, JesuOtaku's tweets about RWBY at this point are wow, just wow

Now I got it! Thanks for the help Iza! Sorry for getting sidetracked there everyone. Now I finally talk about this episode.

This episode was a fucking insult to everyone! There was no rhyme or reason for adding a dog to the whole mix! I understand if they were trying to shoot for comedy and drama, sure! But in a show that is supposed to be and is about to get serious, having a dog for cute moments is unacceptable! You don't put random cute objects or animals in a time where things are about to get serious!

Now, instead of eagerly anticipated some epic battles against the creatures of Grimm for the first time in the future we're going to be forced to endure painfully written cute moments with a dog for God knows how long! Thanks a whole fucking bunch Miles and Kerry! You destroyed whatever hopes I had left for this series! I only hope now that you make Zwei--which is a GOD AWFUL NAME!(Seriously, who the hell names their dog Zwei? And are they seriously trying to rip off Soul Calibur?)--useful instead of just being there for cute moments.

Team CFVY appearing for only thirty seconds just so Scarlet can say a few lines is a fucking SLAP IN THE FACE TO ALL FANS WHO PARTICIPATED IN HER OUTFIT COMPETITION! That better not be the only time Team CFVY appears in this volume because if it is I will literally go down to Austin and do this Monty, Miles, Kerry, and just about everyone else at Rooster Teeth.

Oh, my God! This series is going to kill me. I swear to God it's going to kill me. I don't know if I'll even last to the end of this volume.

you have to express the time is seconds not min and sec

so it would be 60*8 plus 20 for ?start=500

you think the name is bad. Ein is German for 1, guess what Zwei is German for?

if you guess two, congratulations, you know basic german.

This is a sodding god damn mess. Expect more crazed rants in the future

Sooo it's going to be like this every week then eh?

Episode was alright I guess. I'm having a feeling there is something more to the dog than meets the eyes well cuteness or is the whole point of it being stuck in the mail alongside with the can and can openning suppose to be an anime funny gag?

As for them to take on a dangerous mission is a trope I guess (Naruto first mission was above the rank they originall were in and in Fairy Tail they took on an A rank mission that only elite wizards are allow to take) since I'm not suprised that it's all dangerous and such.

Also it explain where Team Coffee were all this time since I did find it weird that they didn't show up until now (so they're second years students?). I'm hoping we see more of them in the future than that one scene only, now if only the rest of Sun and Neptune teammates show up aswell.

How do I explain my point?

Two weeks ago, I was eh. A week ago, I was bored. THIS WEEK, I WAS FURIOUS.

When I saw the dog, a feeling of dread came over me because I knew that they would be using cheap gags to amuse us with a cute animal. It wasn't helped by the reactions: Ruby with the weird little scene with the floating heads and Weiss going all gooey over it just were there to hammer the point of how cute it is. The in world explanation makes no sense; oh you are going out to a mission and need someone to take care of the dog. Why not hire someone to watch over it or put it into a shelter for it to be taken care of.

This ultimately seems like very stupid setup either way. if it's for something other than just a cute gag I bet it will seem pulled out of the ass

Pretty much what I thought from day 1. The terrible animation is bad enough (fuck off before you come at me with a "it's a fan project stop judging it so hard!"), and writing that was cribbed from the most rote, mundane and generic anime you could find.

Seriously, Swei? That's not clever.

Honestly, I didn't hate this episode.

BUT.

It was boring. Dull. Uneventful. The reality is that this show is going to have moments like these, but usually good writers can make up for this by making the character conversations interesting and a build up for the fight to follow. Honestly I wouldn't even mind the humor if it was well done.

Anyway, again, the details of the villain's actions is excluded from the serious conversation scene. Not knowing what your villains are planning can be done well. But we have to know WHAT it is they have ACTUALLY DONE. You present half the mystery so the viewers can speculate and piece the other half together. If they said "she did this to the computer" we'd know what she did, but then WE AS VIEWERS WOULD GO 'WHY?' From there, we would be able to start guessing at or speculating what they plan to do. They are trying to set things up for a twist without providing the first half OF the twist. But hey, fuck villain motives and hints at the full scope of the evil plan, right?

Lemme guess Miles; you don't want to make them actually HAVE an evil plan hinted at, but rather have them doing stuff under the ILLUSION of a grand master plan, because you couldn't actually be arsed to put together a plan that has all the pieces fall together. I guess you just haven't watched Death Note yet.

Let's start with the serious bits. They're not bad. Now, I'm kind of confused as to why Ruby lets it slip about the hideout down southeast. Initially I thought it was a misdirection tactic, trying to draw them away from wherever their actual base was. That made me question why the hell lying to their faces was a good idea. Lying to authority can have serious repercussions.

But then later it turns out Ruby wasn't lying, and they want to go southeast. So what exactly motivated Ruby to tell them about it? I could understand if she was kind of torn between wanting to do it and wanting the responsible adults to help, but at no point has it shown the implication that Ruby thought they were in over their heads. Ruby has defeated ToadLick like, 2 times (I don't count the fight where Penny intervened), and I know that's not a huge deal, but considering they were basically kids going up against a violent and dangerous criminal, I don't see where her lack of confidence is coming from, since nothing stopped them from doing personal investigations before without telling anyone. I can only guess that she just didn't feel right about not telling the truth.

Okay, so that's questionable plot point 1.

Next is "Zwei." Hey, we managed to hit one of those anime tropes! I think it's number 130: Gratuitous German! Anyways, introducing the Corgi? Eh, it's not like the writers really give a damn anyway, might as well let it slide. Why did the dog come in the mail? Never explained. How does Ruby and Yang's father expect them to take care of him while they are staying at a battle school? Haha, you WISH for an explanation *cue M & K's patented "laugh of derision"*. Why did he send them Zwei now, of all times, rather than sooner or later? Pfft, gotta toss in a scene of Weiss using babby talk somehow.

Honestly I did get a chuckle out of Weiss loving dogs despite being a faunus hater. I guess her nose can't detect the stench of blunt force irony.

Now, lemme just take a moment to talk about characters this episode. Zwei is a cutesie animal sidekick thing. If I were to guess, the little bugger can probably take on grimm (which would be hilarious). However if we're going by Western cliches, the next episode will consist of the gang trying to hide the thing from the teacher for throwaway gags.

Weiss is of course fawning (heh, get it) over the thing. I guess just because you hate animal people doesn't mean you have to hate animals.

Yang is kind of there.

Blake is fitting in to the stereotype of "cat" more than "person." Yeah, we're going to be getting these gags a lot, aren't we, Miles? *Cue the M & K Laugh of Derision*

Ozpin is pretty much the best thing in this episode, doing his usual coy 'wise mentor' schtick, quite well, I might add. Velvet was a waste of time, just there to clumsily deliver lines in borderline monotone. I feel bad for the artist who put all that effort into giving her battle gear when she's probably not going to fight that much in the series. But eh, when you like a show and they agree to take your design, you're probably riding more on the high of the moment than thinking about the long term.

And of course the stinger of the episode, in which their hunter mentor is...the faunus teacher from the Jaune arc. Kinda random, but I'd be willing to humor it. If it turns out he's actually a really capable and baddass fighter, I'd be cool with that. But with the tone it seems to be doing I'm worried the next episode is just going to be comedic filler instead.

I decided not to bother with reviewing this episode. It was just another dull episode and it just wasn't worth putting up another thread for. Better I just share my thoughts here instead.

Despite it being a sort of cheap excuse to throw in gags or explain away sudden, and often handy, item materialization, I do have a weak spot for the "Bag of Holding" trope. That made me chuckle there, I admit. Good one, RWBY.

Overall, I share the same sentiment as everyone here. This episode wasn't "bad", per say, I do like that they addressed previous events, even if it was rather nonchalant. What does it take to get people shocked in Beacon? Still, glad to see circumstances grand enough to affect the general public aren't being forgotten by folks at any rate.

However, the episode was rather dull. Non-fight stuff getting done, but could have been presented better. I can live with that. Team has a dog now, that's something. Too early to tell if the canine companion will be a one-trick gag or an actual actor in the overall scheme of things. Combat school remembers its a combat school and we get to see some kind of system for mission tasking in place. RWBY team, demonstrating sufficient capability, gets the rules bent for them so that their plan can align with what the higher-ups have planned for them.

It was ok. Nothing memorable, besides the dog.

One last thing; I'm not one for nitpicking animation, but the lip-synch for Ozpin when he talks with Ruby in his office was pretty off-putting, enough for me to focus on that rather than what he was saying.

to adress points in order

We know that Cinder uploaded something into communications tower but not anything else. I swaer to god, this show doesn't know anything about plotting or twists.

To call Torchwick a violent and dangerous criminal is like calling Tommy Wiseau a dirctor: it works but only in the most loose and most undescriptive definition possible. Or to put another way, this is a violent and dangerous criminal

Torchwick is just a poor imitation of Alec from A Clockwork Orange.

The irony with Weiss is something I did not notice but I don't care. These characters feel inconsistent most of the time so why would Weiss be any better.

I'm going to dread the field trip so very much. The dog will be used for stupid gags, the teacher will be used for stupid gags and any tension will be destroyed(well, further) if the dog beats any of the Grimm.

Once again, rock and hard place only add spikes to each

I'm noticing that people seem to be less angry than I am at this episode.

I honestly wonder why, this episode does not feel like it has any redeeming qualities and just continues the downward spiral of an already idiotic show.

I am constantly perplexed by the frustration people express towards this internet show. I do understand that it isn't for everyone, but it isn't really worth these elaborate displays of anger or criticism. Just...let it go?

For my two cents, this was the weakest episode so far, but it's just going to be what it is. I'm not dissatisfied; I'll just wait for the next one and the inevitable fight scene.

Easy, right?

My overall reaction to the episode is mostly just a resounding 'meh'. Oh sure, it's got its problems, but we've seen a hell of a lot worse from RWBY in terms of writing and animation, plus there were some bits of the episode I actually liked.

Ignoring the vague (read: void of any and all actual content) conversation between Ozpin, Glynda, and Ironwood, I found the bit with Zwei enjoyable. Oh, sure, it's pandering as fuck, but the sheer absurdity of the scene made me laugh, especially when it's implied that the dog's capable of using a can-opener himself. And on top of that, how the hell does Remnant's postal system work? Blake's reaction, though certainly stereotypical, didn't make me cringe like the bit with the laser-pointer, though I was put off by Weiss's sudden submission to the powers of d'awwww. Seriously, just have her like dogs. There was no point to that.

Ozpin is a horrible headmaster. Dumbledore is not the sort of teacher anyone should aspire to be, and it's frankly alarming that people actually trust Ozpin to raise kids.

I'm totally indifferent to CFVY's cameo. Didn't pay attention to anything with them before, so I'm not attached to the team in the slightest. Though I was surprised to find out that they're second years; Cardin's either got balls, bullying someone older than him, or he's even dumber than I thought.

Oh, and I'm looking forward to seeing Professor Oobleck in action. If he's qualified enough to actually teach at Beacon, then he all but has to be at least on Glynda's level. Sure, we're going to get all the forced visual gags about how he's "totally incompetent" at anything outdoors and RWBY having to keep him safe, but once the girls are trapped, injured, and surrounded by Grimm/Torchwick's minions/rabid gerbils, you know he's going to completely the save the day, likely all on his own.

Oh don't misunderstand. This episode was stupid, and the show's on a downward slope (not a spiral though, that would imply the show's making us dizzy). I've just gotten used to the stupid now, so I can't really get mad at it. I prefer to sink my teeth in and tear it apart. And drink its blood.

...what? I can't evicerate stupidity in my own special way?

"Stop hating things I like!"

You can enjoy it. I choose not to, because with how it stands now, I just can't. I want this series to grow and develop. Quite honestly, as it is, it isn't very good. Volume 2 is shaping up to equal volume 1's quality. This is not a compliment.

I WANT to like this show. But I can't because Miles and Kerry are just not very good writers, and they refuse to really put effort into writing this stuff. So they just wanna have fun spewing out a lazy script. Ok, fine. Just don't expect everyone who was hoping for something interesting to blindly accept it.

So then you might ask, "why do you stick with it then?"

I'm not following the show because I want to spew bile at the next stupid thing. I'm following it because I am hoping Miles and Kerry can actually do some good writing at some point. They CAN write if they really try. Remember the whole Weiss/Ruby issues from volume 1? Weiss was actually not bad as a character (albeit a total *****) because she was often projecting her own flaws onto Ruby (the conversation after the boar grimm fight is the best example), Ruby didn't get it, and she feels disillusioned because she wants to see the good in Weiss but can't find it, and thinks there's something wrong with herself rather than Weiss.

Ruby, Weiss? Your character is showing.

You get what I mean? Moments like those, moments where the story does something really well. I want to see MORE of that. I want to see characters with personality, likability, etc. But M&K keep doing things that paint the cast in a negative light. They have made the world little more than a backdrop for their high-school drama, and when you do that, you need to make the characters genuinely likeable.

I'm not the type who'll just let the stupid slide and wait for the next fight to sate my hunger for Oum fight scenes. The fight scenes have no investment if I don't care about the world or the characters.

Maybe he didn't want to spend the money, or he was in a rush and didn't have the time. It's perfectly plausible that there aren't any shelters on that island and he might not have time to go to the mainland and find one.
