Matt chokes back a slight gasp of fear as he began his advance forward. That monster had to be one of the most terrifying things he'd ever beheld, a true engine of death and destruction. There wasn't a single doubt in his mind that he stood nearly no chance against it - at least alone. Hell, even hardened veteran hunters avoided fighting them one-on-one at all costs, if the stories he read were true.

And he was running towards it. Somebody had to, after all. It might as well be him - he'd always joked that the only thing he was good for taking a beating. He just hoped he could withstand this particular beating - he doubted it, but he had to try. Maybe he could distract it long enough for Schwarz and the other to slip by without incident, before running himself? Mentally, he shook his head. That was unlikely - at least the part where he'd be able to get away himself. It could probably outpace him at a trot, let alone a full sprint.

He lands from his prevous perch with a thud, sliding into a practiced defensive stance with staff at the ready. His grip on Irdenkrieg tightens as its three heads swivel around and its malignant gaze comes to rest on him.

It tightens further when each head pulls back into a sneer, baring their fangs loosing a hiss, howl, or roar. Though his trembling had by now steadied, his heart was still racing, kept only in check by his carefully regulated breathing. This was it - sink or swim. Fall or fly. Fight... or die.

"THUNDERING SLASH!"

A streak of blue tears across his vision, striking the wolf head with immense force before disengaging. It looses a mighty screech of rage in response, shaking the very grains of sand at Matt's feet. A tiny trickle of ichor can be seen issue forth from the impact site - but if the head was phased, it didn't show it. Rather, its attention comes to rest at the source of the aggression.

"Hey guys! Having fun?"

"Elva!?" A torrent of emotions flood through him - relief at finding her alive, shock at her sudden appearance. But most of all, a mote of terror - she was here, which meant she faced the same dilemma he did. Fight this monster... or die to the Horde.

And he'd be damned if he let ANYTHING touch a hair on her head. "You need to get out of-" He trails off as the edge of his vision catches the monster rearing back, ready to charge - aiming right for his sister.

His breath catches. Time slows to a crawl.

Unbidden, his body flies to her side with a speed that would have normally shocked him and, with a single motion, he pushes her aside. Just in time, too - he barely has the time to turn about and ready Irdenkrieg before the Tartarus's bull head connects with his braced form, a terrifying roar issuing from its maw. Its horns lock with his staff, and with a mighty grunt, Matt digs in, refusing to give the beast an inch. He hears groans and cracks as his feet are driven deep into the bedrock, a small crater forming from the force of the impact. He dimly registers something he assumes to be pain racing across every joint in his body, but he pushes it aside. He had other things to worry about - namely the other two heads, now eyeing his exposed flanks with a mixture of malice and cruelty.

With another grunt, he pushes the bull head back, barely managing to use the action's recoil to move out of the way of a snap from the wolf head. The snake head, however, seems to account for this movement, as its maneuver loops around to the back, striking with fangs bared. In response, Matt twists his body to the side, and the monster's fangs tear across the side of his armor, the majority of their impact deflected and dulled. Displeased that it failed to outright capture him, the snake head attempts to rear back for another strike...

But unfortunately, Matt had other plans. Lashing out with his free hand, he grips one of the head's massive fangs, before rushing forward, slamming into its cranium with as much force as he could muster. It topples to the ground, stunned, and Matt seizes the opportunity to strike in return with a mighty arc from Irdenkrieg. A crack echoes through the valley as it connects, followed by an enraged hiss as the snake head regains its faculties and it rears back, ready to strike once again.

----ELSEWHERE----

"Come now, Abah. You can't honestly tell me that base couldn't use medical support." Professor duPrince's face contorted into a smug smile, directed at his colleague. "All you need to do is scramble me a Bullhead and I'll be on my merry way - and out of your hair."

Abah shook her head, gripping the bridge of her nose with her still-human hand. "No, DuPrince, and that's final. You will drop this - NOW." He only scoffs in response, turning away with a sneer. "Oh? Last I checked, Miss Abah, Blanc was the Headmaster, not you. I hardly see where you get off ordering me arou-" A cutting glare from his irate coworker cuts him off, and he wisely decides to drop that line of discussion. The sneer, however, remains - perhaps even intensifying. Abah releases an exasperated sigh - must he always be difficult?

"You mean to tell me that you're willing to risk the lives of everyone in that forward outpost by keeping me here, then? And for what? Blanc's ego?" He gives a dramatic flourish with his hands, and they begin to glow an iridescent gold. "I'm only offering to put myself in harm's way for
the wellbeing of my fellow man! Surely, you can-"

If looks could kill, duPrince would be dead many times over from Abah's eyes alone. He stops dead in his speech, his eyes locked to Abah's in silent fear. "I'd have thought you'd know better than to lie to me by now, boy." He trails off for a moment, before responding with a curt nod.

"To answer your question, it wasn't my order. Blanc made it very clear he was going to handle this incident himself - at least out in the field." She turns away, but keeps as sidelong glance in his direction, impassive and cutting. "If you truly have an problem, then, you'd best be willing to justify it to him." Her eyes narrow, their gaze sharpening even further. "In person."

Abah wasn't surprised to see his sneer drop for a fraction of an instant, before being replaced by an impassive frown. DuPrince's arrogance was only surpassed by his cowardice - and if there was one thing Blanc Barca refused to suffer, it was a coward. "...Fine. I suppose my prestigious talents are best put to use elsewhere." He scoffs and strides from the room, trying to keep what little dignity he had left intact. "I'll be in the medbay, if I'm needed. Something tells me we're going to be seeing a rather large influx of injured."

'You should've never left, you moron.' Abah rolled her eyes and went back to sifting through the many video feeds. Shortly after he had departed, Blanc had sent her a message ordering her to keep a particularly close watch over any students stuck in the Horde's path in the wake of the flare - both to monitor their progress and to determine any possible connection between them and the incident. Eight in particular stood out, several of whom she recognized as being troublemakers on the airship.

'They've all demonstrated at least passing competence in fighting the creatures of Grimm... but if mere talent at arms made a Hunter, the Grimm would be extinct by now.' Her eyes sweep over the screens, the gaze cold and judging. 'I suppose we'll see in due time whether they're truly worthy... of...' Her thought trails off as one of her feeds - monitoring one 'Mathias Steele' - panned up to reveal a sight surprising and foreboding in equal measure.

'A... a Tartarus? How did...' She stares dumbly at the screen for an instant, before a shocked gasp pulls her from her stupor. "A Tartarus?! Oh no no no no, this will not do at all! We've been culling the Horde for weeks to prevent exactly this from happening!" Professor Wink pulls at his beard, distress evident in his features. "Blanc must be warned of this immediately! This is much more dire than we feared!"

It takes an instant for Abah to regain her faculties, but once she does, her composure is once again unflappable, the shock in her features replaced with an expression of grim determination. She flips over to her Scroll's messaging function and punches in a quick message - 'Tartarus has manifested. Prospectives in kill zone. Intervene?'

A moment passes before the response comes. 'No. Sink or swim, Abah - you know that as well as I.'

She grits her teeth. At times, even she had a hard time understanding Blanc's adherence to Lodestar's ideology - what good were dead students? It was absurd to assume that even a group of Lodestar candidates could handle a Tartarus on their own.

But, perhaps, the assumption wasn't there at all. Lodestar only accepted the best, after all, and if they could kill or evade a Tartarus, they'd certainly earn that moniker. Still, it made her uneasy, throwing such a patently infeasable challenge their way.

But, alas, Blanc was the Headmaster, and his word was final. She casts a glance at Professor Wink, whose expression seems to deflate when he reads a message from his own Scroll - likely Blanc reaffirming his order to stand down. Their hands were truly tied, as much as they hated to admit it.

Her eyes flit back to the feeds, just in time to see the goat faunus from the airship grab the girl next to her... and throw her with enough force to kill a weaker man, right at the Tartarus. Wink seems to catch that too, as he whoops with joy and shouts something about a 'Fastball special.'

She allows herself a rare smile at the tactic's results - drawing first blood against the beast's wolf head. Impressive for a mere candidate, to say the least. The smile drops, however, when she sees the girl fail to follow up on the strike, instead doubling back to a barely defensible position. 'Bravado is all well and good... but failure to follow up could cost lives.' Her fears are confirmed the beast rears back, ready to charge the exposed girl.

What happens next, however, is most certainly something she did NOT expect - the girl being shoved out of harm's way by the cowardly brute from earlier. But that, on its own, doesn't terribly surprise her - it's the boy's followup. Her mouth opens slightly in shock.

"...Did...did he just stop a Tartarus's charge on a dime?" Her mouth is slightly agape for a moment before she closes it, remembering her composure. Wink whoops again, joy painting his elderly features. "Ooh, good show, lad! Teach that mangy fleabag what for!"

What surprised her the most, she supposed, was not the boy's strength. She had seen plenty of strongmen pass through Lodestar's gates, after all. It was the look in his eyes - glinting with barely restrained terror. If she didn't know any better, she'd expect the owner of such eyes would be running for their life, seeking shelter, avoiding danger. And yet, here Mathias Steele was, facing down one of the most dangerous Grimm in the known world.

She allows herself another rare smile. It wasn't often she was wrong.

It was even rarer she was glad to be wrong.

The wolf head has taken 2 stress damage and the snake head 3. The bull head is unharmed. Matt has taken 4 stress and 2 stress from the bull and snake heads respectively.

(( Amber ))

Amber stood back for a moment and grinned as she saw the streak that was Elva lay into the wolf head with a good swipe of her axe. But things seemed to go sour when she landed. The Tartarus promptly turned to her and began to charge. Even as Matt pushed his sister aside, Amber started to rush forward with an angry yell.

"You hurt my friends and you answer to me, crap-for-brains!" she bellowed as she closed the distance.

Watching Matt closely as she closed the gap between them, she saw as he blocked the bull head and stopped it with nothing more than muscle and determination, before pushing it back to turn to the serpent's head as it reared at him. That was her opportunity.

Flicking a wrist to extend a whip, she pulled back for just a moment before lashing out. Her aim was true, and her whip wrapped around one of the bull head's horns before the high-powered reel pulled her in and quickly closed the gap. Amber thrust up one knee, using the momentum to slam it against the Tartarus' head, then kicking off and landing with a grunt next to Matt.

"Hey Matt, Chesshie! Glad to see you're alright!" she told them with a crooked smile, before raising her fists for another attack.

Diamond sped across the rocky terrain a few seconds behind the two. They did their own initial over-the-top attack to the Grimm and the brother blocked the counter attack from the Grimm.

Impressive strength he's got

She stored that away for later in her mind before looking at the creature blocking her way. Massive, slathering jaws and monstrous heads, attached to a pretty undefended body, and more importantly, legs. Stopping for a moment, she smirked and began on her course of action, sprinting across the expanse to the Grimm's underside.

"COVER ME!,"She yelled out, dividing her attention between the three heads, the uneven ground, and the legs she was aiming for,"I'VE GOT AN IDEA!"

Sliding under the main body, she jumped to her feet and extended her Icarians, shoving them into one foreleg at the same time, before twisting and ripping downwards with all her strength, spinning to the other front leg and doing the exact same thing, Di did what anyone in her current position would do, retracted her weapons, and jumped out from under the now partially crippled beast, somersaulting away to its right flank. She then re-extended both Icarians, breathing heavily from nervousness and quickly considering her next move.

She had partially crippled the Grimm, but she began looking for some way to completely cripple it. It deserved no better if it continued to attack this viciously.

"You need to get out of-"

Matt's reaction to Elva's sudden appearance wasn't quite what she was hoping for. Joy at seeing her alive, pride in her courage, those would have been great. Heck, she'd have been happy with just a smile. Instead she got a trembling plea for her to run away before being pushed to the ground. Irate, she jumped up to find her brother grappling with a giant bull head.

"I'm not going anywhere! I can fight too!" she said, stamping her foot. Demonstrating his tremendous strength Matt pushed the beast back, before cracking the snake head with a crashing blow from Irdenkrieg. Seeing her chance Elva leaped after the serpent, swiping a glancing blow across its face. She'd overextended however and fell gracelessly, left hand taking the brunt of her weight as she crashed into the ground and raised a cloud of ivory dust.

"Owww!" Elva cried, clutching her wrist and rolling to the side as Di swooped out from under the Grimm's body.

"Great, now I've given him another reason for why I shouldn't fight," Elva thought, her wrist throbbing as she stared up at the giant Grimm.

Jade remained hidden from view behind a small rock outcropping, her bow drawn and aimed at the bull's head. While the others kept it busy with incredible skill, Jade fell back into her most comfortable way of fighting. Though she had a melee weapon, her greatest skill was at range with the power of her bow.

She drew breath after breath, finding her rhythm. She watched the movements of the crab grass between her and the Grimm, judging the wind. She kept a close eye on the Grimm and it's movements and even the movements of those fighting down below, waiting for the perfect moment to free her arrow. Or rather, arrows for she had several held in the bow at once; the effective firing of which a trick she'd been working on for years.

Still, each time she saw an opening, she hesitated and the moment was lost. Would she mess up like she had earlier? Certainly things hadn't been going her way for the initiation between the ankle injury and the Bloodmane mauling. It was during the midst of this that she saw it; a lone star shining through the dimming light of the late day. At that moment, the flickering light reminded her of everything. If she had difficulties, it was because the stars demanded it and were testing her.

She believed in her lucky star.

Once more she lined up the shot, but hesitated no more. At exactly the right moment - just as the bull head lunged toward one of her allies. All at once and completely on instinct, she twisted slightly, turned her bow 90 degrees and released. As she fired, the bull's head turned - perhaps suddenly aware of the danger - facing the arrows head on. Less than a second later, the arrows all slammed into the Grimm's face. Explosions followed, drowning out the roars in pain from the bull. When the smoke cleared, the bull's eyes were gone; replaced with bloody spurts. Burns covered it's face and it seemed disoriented in the extreme.

Jade missed all of this however as she quickly dropped and rolled to to escape any immediate backlash. Knowing that her element of surprise was all tapped out, she transformed her weapon and ran off to join the others on the front line. The stars told her they'd vanquish their foe this day and the stars were never wrong.

Chesshie watched as some of the others ran in to fight the beast, doing some heavy damage to it's heads and legs. One of them even addressed them with a smile.

"Hey Matt, Chesshie! Glad to see you're alright!"

"Uh... you too." She replied, and glanced over at the Grimm, who was considerably outnumbered. With everyone's attention on the Grimm, it would be a sinch for her to run.. but... they were all fighting for their lives - including hers - and she couldn't live with herself if she just left them to their fate...

Her eyes narrowed in determination. "Right." Chesshie reactivated her gun function of her Queen's Mallet and took aim at the closest target. "Take this, creep!" She shouted, and fired several rounds into the Grimm's wolf head, making it howl in pain.

Chesshie grinned, reveling in her minor victory.

Jet had to admit he was impressed as the rest of the prospective Lodestar students whaled on the Tartarus. Even Chesshie was doing something. Well, now it was his turn! The Owl Faunus took aim at the bull head, it was thrashing about with pain from a very impressive barrage of arrows. Making sure the Dirge was in the right mode, Jet took aim and fired.

And... missed.

He kept his cool, not point getting angry at himself when there was a giant, menacing Grimm that needed killing. However, there was a feeling of uselessness and powerlessness at the back of Jet's mind. All that happen was the shot had bounced off a horn. He'd been all too trigger happy and should've let the Drige power up for a stronger shot.

'"Could'ves and should'ves are meaningless next to reality, you know.'

The teenager cleared his throat, dusted himself down and made a play of reloading the sniper rifle. Hopefully no one had seen that. Of course anyone observing would've have seen the pathetic failure. Lodestar needed able students, not ones that couldn't even hit a massive, hulking Grimm!

How embarrassing...

Schwarz sized up the Tartarus as the others arrived and threw themselves at it...some literally. He watched it move, saw how it dealt with the first few attacks. Specifically, he focused on the wolf's head, knowing that it could howl at any moment and summon Beowolves from the horde behind them.

Then, he saw a good opening, after some Faunus had smacked it. With a flick of the wrist, Schwarz moved the right crystal into place. Then, he stabbed it into the ground, producing several earthen pillars to rise up beneath the Grimm, causing its already partially damaged legs to momentarily lose their balance.

With the opportunity wide open, Schwarz dashed forward and leaped at the head, aiming for a good slash across the eyes. The beast was able to move far enough away to avoid being blinded, but its snout still took the brunt of the hit.

The strike at least successful in hitting the Tartarus, Schwarz moved back to keep a cushion of distance as he readied for either his next move, or the beast's counterattack.

Prof. Van Wink stared out of a window from the highest tower in Lodestar down at the battle across the bridge. The prospective students were fairing well against the Tatarus though they were a long ways from victory. If some of them survived, they'd make fine additions to the school. Of course, they had to escape the unexpected challenge first. Throughout it all however, Prof. Van Wink didn't think these things. His thoughts were concerned with a single, much more pressing issue. He had but one thought: "I wonder if it tastes like dog, snake, or beef?"

It was, to him, a question for the ages.

So consumed by this question was he, that he almost failed to notice when company arrived. Almost. "Victoria. What brings you up here?" he asked, feigning curiosity. He already already knew the answer. It was why he was here too. Prof. Francis, dressed in a white lab coat, walked over to the window where Van Wink stood and joined him in his watching. "For the view." she offered. after a few moments she added "I wish we could help those students." with a worried look upon her face. "They're not ready for a Tatarus."

Van Wink spoke up while still facing the window. "They're not students yet." Prof. Francis shook her head; "You know very well that's not an answer." Van Wink seemed to just shrug at the statement; it seemed a perfectly reasonable response to him. Still, he supposed he could add a little more. "Blanc gave explicit instructions not to help; you'd have to be mad not to listen to him."

Prof. Francis stared at Van Wink for a long time after that, wondering if he noticed the irony. Van Wink just stared out the window, face stoic and in deep thought. Apparently he didn't, so Prof. Francis returned to the window. The pair stood there for a long while in silence, watching the fight unfold. Eventually Van Wink spoke again. "Do you think the Tatarus would be better with a baked or mashed potatoes?"

Victoria never answered.

[HEADING=2]Across the Bridge[/HEADING]

The Tatarus was injured, but hardly down for the count. Blinded, off balance, and mangled as it was, it still had plenty of fight left in it. Each head unleashed a roar of anger and frustration, though only the Wolf's head had any effect. The wolf head unleashed a terrible, long howl. The sound seemed to echo in the ears of all present, filling them with a sort of primal dread. When the echo's finally faded and they heard the distant callings of other creature's in response, all could understand why the sound was so horrifying.

At the same time, the Snake head seemed to eye it's many options carefully, slowly, and quietly. Their was a cold intelligence behind it's reptilian eyes which exceeded that of both the wolf and the bull. It remained still for a long while before the perfect opportunity arose, then struck like lightning at it's enemy of choice: Matt.

Finally, the Bull's head swung around wildly in both pain and rage. The bull rushed forward, even while it couldn't see and with it's legs twisted and off balance. The attack was wild and unpredictable, but the shear size of the creature all but ensured some level of damage was to be done. Though the strike failed to hit anyone directly, the bull slammed into the hard stone, shattering it and sending rocks out in all directions.

(( Amber ))

About a split-second after she had touched down from her latest attack, Amber could only watch as Elva decided to throw herself at the snake head of the Tartarus with a swipe of her axe, while Di did something similar, sliding underneath the beast and slashing at it's front legs with both swords. Di managed to get away without a problem, but Elva managed to injure herself in her landing.

As Chesshie and the well-dressed human boy worked to punish the Grimm further, Amber started to move to cover Elva. The explosion behind her made her turn back though. The Tartarus was overbalanced by stone pillars that had thrust up from the ground, while the bull head was obscured by smoke. When it cleared, the head was bloodied and blind. But not down for the count yet.

It flailed wildly, ramming itself into the stone thanks to the state it's legs were in, but Amber didn't expect the shower of rock it caused. She lifted her hands to cover her face, but a single stone bounced off of a horn.

Raising her head, and standing straighter, the look on Amber's face was clearly pissed. Without a second thought, she broke into a run, heading straight for the offending head and leapt, leaving a delayed crater in her wake. As soon as she was level with the Grimm, she reared back and slammed her forehead right between the beast's ruined eyes with a loud crack. Amber could actually feel it's skull fracturing.

She landed with a thud, then glared up at the Grimm through her bangs.

"Don't. Touch. My horns." she murmured in a low growl.

Elva flinched as the three-headed beast roared and renewed its assault on the party. Ignoring the pain in her wrist she charged forward as the bull head smashed into the rock, sending chunks of stone flying in every direction. Ducking and weaving Elva dodged the worst of the spray, her aura protecting her from the one small fragment that did make contact.

As the snake head reared back and lunged at Matt, Elva jumped to meet it.

"Leave my brother alone!"

Unfortunately Elva's wrist flared with pain as she jumped and lost its grip on her axe. Swinging one-handed, the blade glanced off the beast's scales unscathed.

"Damn it!," the diminutive girl thought as she hit the ground, rolling up beside Amber and grimacing. "This is NOT going according to plan!"

The Grimm flailed about wildly, so Chesshie hurriedly began to move out of the way... only to stumble and fall to the ground. As she looked up, she could see the monster come ever closer.

Panic flooded her veins, even as a voice in her mind snapped, You are not going to die here like some coward, so MOVE!

With a burst of adrenaline, Chesshie took to her feet, managing to run a short distance away while preparing herself for the next attack.

A hail of stones rained over Matt as he righted his balance after striking at the snake head. Most shot harmlessly off his armor, but the ocassional errant chip found its way into one of the open seams. Much like before, he registered something he associated with pain, but it was a distant feeling - muted and irrelevant. With a mighty shrug, he finishes righting himself, Irdenkrieg at the ready.

Just in time, too - the snake head, now fully recovered from the assaults arrayed against it, eyed him with malice, displeased that he had so far eluded its grasp. Striking out again, Matt manages to once again twist to the the side, redirecting the brunt of the blow away from his person.

He grits his teeth in mounting fear and frustration - two or three more hits like that, or even just one clean one, and he'd be in serious trouble. He had to finish this fight now, or everyone here would be in serious danger without him to distract this monstrosity. He casts a glance Schwarz's way - having just finished following through on an attack of his own against the wolf head.

Matt takes in a deep breath, trying to steady his wavering resolve. 'In and out. Just like Brynn said.' His heartrate returns to normal, and the haze of fear clouding his thoughts lifts ever so slightly. 'We're splitting our efforts across several fronts... at this rate, there's no way we'll kill this thing before one of us ends up seriously injured.' He tightens his grip on Irdenkrieg, sliding into a defensive stance. He had an idea... but he'd need Schwarz's cooperation to see it through.

And then, as his sister tries to follow through on another attack against the beast, she's rebuked, scoring only a glancing hit as she lands against her side - hard.

For an instant, time stops. And when it resumes, Matt's glare, now cold and resolute, is affixed very firmly on the offending beast.

"Schwarz." He surprises even himself with how authoritative he sounds, given the terror still ravaging his gut. But, much like his pain, the feeling is muted, distant, easily put aside, almost as though it were happening to some other, weaker Matt. Gone are any audible traces of doubt, of fear. "We're killing this thing. NOW."

'Fate can cause me all the harm it pleases... but nothing - not the Grimm, not the world, not ANYTHING - will touch a hair on her head. Not while I can help it.'

"My sentiments exactly!" Schwarz gave a short smirk before he reminded himself of their trip down the cliff. "So long as a crackpot plan isn't behind this."

"Launch me at it as hard as you can, then hit it with everything you've got."

"Oh lord..." Schwarz rolled his eyes with a shrug before bringing Blooming Anemone to bear. Another flick, moving the right things into the right place before sending the sword back into the ground.

An instant later, a pillar of stone rose up beneath Matt, angled to launch him towards the Tartarus. To help guide the brute of a student, a tempest rose up around him as well and the pillar at the same time. The gusts worked to propel Matt off the pillar and straight towards the Tartarus' snake head. With a heave, Matt jumps - wind roaring as he rockets forward.

He slams into the snake head with a sickening crack. The impact alone looks to be seriously damaging, the monster reeling back with a pained hiss, but Matt lashes out with his free hand, gripping the beast by one of its fangs. His momentum carries him forward, and he streaks over to the Tartarus's back, the snake head in tow.

'This is for Elva, you soulless monster!' Wasting no time, Matt angles the fang against the beast's hide... then brings Irdenkrieg down with terrible force, driving it in like a nail into a board. Black ichor spews from the wound as the other heads howl in pain - especially as the now-dazed snake head lashes impotently about, trying to free itself.

After Matt pinned the snake head, Schwarz switched his weapon to its ranged form. Quickly, he took aim at at the head, flailing about in Matt's grasp. Holding his breath, Schwarz leveled the shot, tracing the head's movement as he waited for the perfect moment.

"You want everything I got? Let me just show you how much that is..." Just before his lungs would force him to breathe, Schwarz fired. Like his last shot at the Arachnae Queen, the glowing round gathered whatever loose stones and dust it could and coalesced them into a diamond spike. It then made contact with the snake head, practically obliterating it on contact.

Adding insult to injury, Matt grabbed the spike, slowed by its passage through what remained of the skull, and rammed it down the snake's throat. The head thrashed about, what little it could do, until the spike could no longer be seen. It then stopped flailing and flopped down limp, dead from the neck up.

The Nevermore's feather was entrancing. Or, rather, the very tip of it was. Lugging a six-foot tall feather around a massive desert, surrounded on all sides by countless Grimm, while trying desperately to make it to Lodestar's safe zone wasn't the best of ideas; even Claire would admit that. Still, there was no reason she couldn't take just a little souviner from her latest battle, and the few inches of pitch-black keratin were more than enough to satisfy the Faunus, what with its curious scent and structure. One of her eyes scanned the surrounding desert as she ran, watching out for anymore threats, while the other was fully absorbed in studying her trophy. At least, it was until the scarlet flare tore upwards towards the sky.

Unconsciously storing the feather in her belt, Claire stared at the strange, pulsing light. Whatever it was, it clearly wasn't normal; the nausea roiling in her gut was more than enough to confirm that. Even as the flare faded away, the uncomfortable feeling remained, setting the girl's senses on edge. Something bad was going to happen, she could just feel it.

...Wait, was the ground starting to tremble a bit?
"Students! Prepare yourselves for launch." As Professor Francis's last words echoed through the hanger, Claire braced herself for the burst of wind that would send her flying. A half-smile dancing across her lips, the girl couldn't help but watch the Huntress's hand as she flicked more and more Dust crystals at the prospective students, sending them flying out into the open air. Before she knew it, one of the crystals was heading her way, and then-She was hurtling towards the ground, towards the pristine deathtrap that was the Ivory Wastes.

Though the wind roaring past her ears made sure that she couldn't hear anything other than her own thoughts, Claire reflexively noted the reactions of those blasted out with her. Some were clearly struggling not to panic, while others weren't even bothering to hide their sheer exuberance. Most, however, simply looked like they were deep in thought, likely figuring out their landing strategies.

But hey, there wasn't really an urgent need to rush. Easily a few kilometers from the ground, the Faunus figured that taking a few moments to just enjoy the view couldn't hurt.

...But then again, the ground would probably hurt A LOT if she hit it while going straight down. Breaking a leg on impact probably wasn't the best way to start the day.

"C'mon guys!" Claire shouted as she drew her weapons, slapping together so that they shifted and clicked into place. "Let's kick it off with a bang!"

Reorienting herself so that her head pointed downwards, she pressed Naga and Oroborus against her shoulder, aimed approximately south and, making sure that none of the other students were in her line of fire:
KA-BLAM!

Now that she had some horizontal momentum, as well as vertical, the landing would be that much easier to handle. Claire fired off a few more shots, building her speed until she was satisfied. Now it was just a matter of waiting until she was 10 or 15 meters off the ground, aiming straight down, and- "HaHAAAAAAAAA!"

Her shotgun kicking into her shoulder one last time, the girl reduced her downwards inertia vastly. Then, all she had to do was let her heels dig into the white sand and tuck her body into a roll, in order to convert the rest of her momentum. Which would have gone perfectly, had not her left foot caught on a poorly placed rock, tipping her forward and dragging her face across several meters.

"Ow."

Luckily, aside from a bruised ego and some minor scrapes, it looked like Claire had managed to land unharmed. After allowing herself a moment to soothe her pride, the Faunus was back on her feet and moving, her weapon disassembled and stored on her back and hip. Orienting herself north, she set off at a slow run; she could go faster if she went all out, sure, but conserving stamina and strength was probably going to be important for this test. How had Professor Blanc phrased it? She couldn't just survive, she had to
thrive. This pace was easy to maintain, and by activating her aura for a few minutes every now and then she could keep it for nearly a day.

Lodestar was less than a day's travel away. It was time to start the next chapter of her life.
The horde of Grimm was closing on her. There was no doubt about that. According to her Scroll, the safe zone couldn't be more than a kilometer or two away, so the only question was whether or not she could make it there before the black swarm could overtake her. At this point, the Grimm were within a couple minutes of catching up, and her muscles were already screaming with protest. It was going to be close, that much was certain.

Suddenly, the sounds of combat grabbed Claire's attention as she ran, jerking her attention away from her pursuers. People shouting, the roar of some unknown Grimm, and the explosions of Dust and aura filled the air ahead of her; whatever she was coming up on, it was apparently pretty damn big. Claire shot ahead, doing her best to ignore the pain in her side as she scaled the dune before her. As she cleared the top, her eyes sprung wide open.

"That's... a Tartarus!?" she exclaimed, grinning despite her exhaustion. This particular breed had always fascinated her with its bizarre anatomy. Did it have three separate brains, each with its own nervous system? Or maybe the Grimm only had a single hivemind that operated all the heads at once. Did it have multiple stomachs, lungs, or hearts? She wanted to find out exactly how the brutish thing worked. She wanted to know.
Claire had joined up with a couple other applicants not too long after landing. Safety in numbers and all that. They had seemed decent enough too; sticking with them throughout the initiation test probably would've been a good move. Unfortunately, the pack of Beowolves they had run into made sure that didn't happen.

Beowolves may not have been the toughest type of Grimm to come across, but they were certainly one of the most annoying. This particular pack must have numbered thirty five to forty, and didn't waste much time in driving the newly united students apart. Though she managed to strike a few of the beasties down along the way, Claire eventually found herself on her own, beset by ten or so of the Grimm. If there had been a wall or something she could've planted her back against, she might have been able to fight them all off. As it was, in the middle of a desert, it would only be a matter of time before one of them got into her blind spot and took her down. All she could do was keep moving, hoping that an advantage would make itself known. Perhaps some sort of narrow canyon she could escape down, more reinforcements, or maybe even-

KAAAAAAAAW~

The one advantage of being attacked by multiple Grimm at the same time: They all wanted to be the only ones to get some juicy Faunus meat.

The Nevermore must've been an adolescent of some sort; with a wingspan of maybe 3 and a half meters, it was apparent that it still had a lot of growing to do. Still with only one swooping strike, the giant bird had nearly snapped one of the Beowolves in half. That was more than enough to make the rest of the pack think twice about just rushing it.Claire's first instinct, naturally, was to cripple one of the Nevermore's wings as soon as possible, limiting its mobility and making it easier to kill. However, that would still leave her surrounded by the Beowolves... So, this next stunt would either save her neck, or send her down in history as one of Lodestar's stupidest applicants. Hopefully the first one.

Smiling, she simply stood still, extending her arms into a t-shape, though she was still holding onto her swords. The Grimm cast a quick glance her way, then back at its competition. Apparently making up its mind, the Nevermore flapped its wings, flew over and snatched her up by the arms, carrying Claire up and away from the Beowolves. Though the bird's talons were more than a little painful, the Faunus endured it, judging the distance between her new ride and the quickly receding Beowolves.

When she guessed that they had gone far enough: "Okay, that should be good."

...

It had taken some effort to get the Nevermore to crash land without permanently injuring it, but Claire wouldn't have felt right killing it after the birdie had helped her out. As it finally flew away, squawking in pain and rage and with a good portion of its down feathers singed off, the young woman waved farewell. "See ya! Thanks for the lift!"

Though a few more cuts and bruises had been added to her collection, the whole encounter had gone a lot better than Claire had thought it would. Hey, at least she was alive, and at even managed to pull a trophy out of the ordeal! Lovingly, she examined the 6' tall feather she'd yanked off the Nevermore. She couldn't very well take all of it with her, but maybe just a small part of it would be alright...
Now that she was close enough, Claire could see that the fight was even bigger than she had thought. Eight other prospective students were battling the Tatarus, and from what she could see they were dealing quite a hefty chunk of damage to it. Hell, the Grimm looked to be on its last legs already. Still, that didn't mean that she couldn't get in on the action before it was all over. And was it just her, or did she recognize a few of them? Other students from Sanctuary, maybe?

Regardless of who they were, they weren't going to finish the fight without her. Drawing Naga and Oroborus, she combined them into their shotgun mode as she pelted forward, even passing some of the students that were hanging back from the fight. Skidding to a halt a few meters away from the mostly downed Tartarus, Claire eagerly lined up her shot, taking care to avoid winging any of the humans and other Faunus. "Eehee!" she all but squealed in excitement. "I've never seen a Tartarus up close like this! If I shoot one head, do all of them feel it!?"

Not bothering to wait for an answer, she took aim at the beast's wolf head, and let a round fly. The Dust-powered shot slammed into its target, eliciting another pained growl from the wolf, but not, curiously, from the bull head. Hmm...

Rolling Combat to shoot the wolf head: +3. Succeed by one shift.

As Jet tried to line up another shot, rocks tumbled down and hit the Owl Faunus resulting in a groan and a scope knocked out of place. A voice inside yelled at him to mind his surroundings, but there was a reason why snipers had spotters with 'em. What happened afterward included a quietly impressed Jet and the end of the Tartarus's snake head. Now only two remained: the wolf and the bull. The wolf head had just taken a shot from a very... curious Snake Faunus who'd entered the fray, and the bull head was still quite a mess. However, while Jet would never forgive himself for missing that shot, he could redeem himself by hitting the bull head with another. Jet took a deep breath and got back into firing position.

The bull head was still kicking up a fuss. How annoying.

But, it was just a matter of charging up a shot and waiting for the right moment to fire. That's the thing with sniper rifles: one good shot was all that you needed, except you needed to be a good shot as well to ensure the latter happened. Thankfully, Jet had pretty of practice in him. When the White Fang didn't want to blow things up they'd always needed someone to take out targets and Mr. Owl Eyes and Sniper Rifle seemed like a good pick for the job. Well, enough about the past, the Dirge was ready. A low hum indicted that it was fully charged up, ready to unleash its might on the bull head. Jet was too. As soon as the lumbering bull head lurched its way near the crosshair, Jet fired.

This time, it hit. It hit hard.

A roar (or was it a scream?) accompanied a splatter of blood. There was now a gaping hole in the bull head but it wasn't down for the count just yet. Jet could easily admire the beast's endurance but didn't bother too. After all, no point in being killed because you were standing there admiring the fact that the Tartarus managed to stay standing after receiving that much punishment. The Snake Faunus with that remark of hers seemed like the type to do that but she'd run in guns (well, one gun) blazing. Thankfully. One thing was for sure: her giggle would get very annoying very fast. Regardless, at least Jet actually did something. Even if the simple act of firing a gun would be lost in splendour of those previous attacks.

The Bull head swung itself wildly around, smashing the stones they stood on into piercing bits and crushing pieces. Luckily for Diamond, she was nimble enough to evade any that would cause her to take any real damage. The Grimm was weakening certainly, especially since they had some kind of sniper on the ridge that had just blown a hole the size of her Icarians through the beast. Quickly thinking of a plan to finish this thing off, she called out.

"Amber! Swing me up!"

Amber couldn't help but watch with awe as the Tartarus was crippled and wounded to the point where one head was out of action and the other two weren't far behind. In fact, a new girl had joined the fray, meaning that the prospective students were quickly tipping the odds in their favor. So when Di called out for her to swing the Badger Faunus up, Amber's smile spread into an eager grin. Grabbing the very end of one of her whips, she extended it to it's maximum length before holding it out for her.

"You got it Di. Let's tear that thing apart." she told her as she got ready, grasping her end of the whip with both hands.
Gingerly grabbing the length of whip thrown at her, Di carefully wrapped the spikes around one of her Icarians, she doubted she'd be able to use both arms for this endeavor anyways. extending her free Icarian, her breathing quickened and she nodded to Amber.

The muscular girl let out a soft laugh.

"You'd better hold on tight. EVERYONE GET BACK!" she called out to the others before tugging on the whip with all of her strength.

The resulting strength behind the pull was something the Faunus wasn't fully prepared for. She'd seen how strong Amber was earlier in the valleys, but this was incredible. Her head snapped backwards and she struggled to keep her vision unblurred as she was swung around the Horned Faunus. One...Two...Three times, and then suddenly she was launched directly at the Wolf head. Past the snapping jaws, she shoved her Icarian into the neck of the Grimm, the inertia swinging her around, ripping through flesh and muscle as well as bone no doubt. She smiled slightly, they were almost to Lodestar.

When Di began to slow down thanks to her sword in the Wolf head's neck, Amber bared her teeth and grasped her whip a little tighter.

"Off with your head!" she growled, giving the whip a final, sharp tug.

"EEEEE-YAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!"

Di screamed, feeling the unexpected 'tug' and slicing through the Grimm.

The result was Di and her sword completing it's circuit around the neck, cleaving through the last bit of bone and flesh and pulling her back in. As Amber caught her in her arms, the Wolf head fell to the white sands with a thud, staining it with Grimm blood. Looking down at Di, Amber couldn't help but grin.

"Nice." she said with a nod and a pat on the shoulder.

Di exhaled and extracted herself from Amber's grip, unwinding the spiked chain from around her Icarian before slamming her foot down on the still slightly moving head.

"Yeah," she replied, looking at the eyes of the Grimm in front of them as the head slowed and became still,"Nice."

Oh god, she was here. Just when she thought things were going well, Claire showed up out of nowhere. Jade supposed she should be happy that the woman was here; there was no denying her skill. It was just how impossible she could be. Jade didn't say anything about it of course; they had bigger fish to fry.

Or snakes to fry... or wolves.... or bulls...

Once Claire arrived, Jade stopped her advance. The front line was actually holding up quite well now. Between Claire, Matt, his apparent sister, Diamond, Amber, and the other two she didn't know, she had no doubt they'd win the fight. Of course, winning was only a partial goal now. The second half was "not losing anyone". To do so, they either needed to be conservative and wear it down with harrying blows or...

"We go with blitzkrieg." she muttered to herself. But how would they deliver an instant kill to the beast? It was far too big to bring down that easily even with all their crazy powers and weapons. As Jade looked out past the beast, she noticed two things. 1) Lodestar. As much fun as killing a Tatarus was, their real goal was to reach the school. That meant even if they did kill it, it was just one possible option. That said, the "run and live" plan left a bad taste in her mouth; they were Lodestar students in training, not weak willed Beacon children. They'd fight and kill and die before running away.

That left the second item: the cliff. If they wouldn't run, than they'd just need to use Lodestar to their advantage. The Ivory Wastes were not kind to anyone; Grimm included. The best option for a quick death then was to push it back as a group. "All of you! We can end this now if we work together!" she said, pointing to it and the cliff. "As One!" she screamed, switching back to her bow. "On my mark! 3... 2... 1..."

She didn't need to say 0; the arrow did it for her.

We're building to the final attack now. We need three successes to "push the Grimm back" with a DC 5. This can be through uses of Aura, Physique, Athletics, Combat... anything that makes sense and looks cool. There are now 3 Invokes for +2 from Jade's countdown. Anyone is allowed to use them to "push it over the top.

We need three successes (DC 5) before Matt can push the beast over the cliff to the probably sharp rocks below. Good luck and god speed.

(( Amber ))

As Di examined the results of their work, Amber rolled her shoulders and raised her fists in anticipation of the Tartarus' response. It was a voice yelling out behind them that caused her to pause and turn.

"All of you! We can end this now if we work together! As One!"

Jade had come out from her vantage point and was pointing to the cliff. Glancing between it and the Tartarus, the Faunus realized what she had in mind: Pushing the monster into the valley, leaving the way to Lodestar clear. Looking back at Jade, she gave her a thumbs-up and a crooked smile.

"On my mark! 3... 2... 1..."

"You got it, boss-girl!" Amber cried as their impromptu leader finished her countdown with a loosed arrow.

She broke into a mad dash, heading straight for the beast's legs. If they were going to force it over the edge of the cliff, they needed to make sure that it couldn't move to stop them. Clapping her hands together, she pulled back for a right hook. Her fist impacted with enough force to shatter bone, and she bared her teeth with satisfaction before ducking away in case it retaliated.

Things were getting crazy in this fight. A new student had jumped into the fray, adding her shotgun blast to the onslaught unleashed by the students. The snake head was down and out, utterly destroyed by Matt and some guy in fancy clothes, and it looked like the other two would be following suit shortly.

"You'd better hold on tight. EVERYONE GET BACK!"

Elva jumped out of Amber's radius as Di grabbed one of her chains. She watched with glee and a hint of jealousy as the badger Faunus was whipped around and flung at the wolf head. Ripping through its flesh with her falchion, she decapitated the beast with the help of a savage tug from Amber. As the taller girl caught Di and set her down, Elva dashed back to their side.

"Woo that was awesome! Now let's finish blind and ugly there," Elva exclaimed, pointing at the remaining head thrashing and spraying disgusting blood and ichor everywhere.

"All of you! We can end this now if we work together! As One!"

As Jade's voice rang out with authority, Elva looked to her then back to where she was pointing. The chasm... if they could drive it back there was no way it would survive that fall.

"Aye aye Cap'n!" Elva yelled, snapping a quick salute before dashing forward alongside Amber. "Hehe, always wanted to say that," she thought as Jade's arrow streaked over her head. It detonated as she charged the beast's leg, swinging her axe.

"Time to die you mongrel!" she screamed, the heavy axe head crashing through skin and bone with a resounding crunch. Jumping back as the Grimm tottered on two destroyed legs, Elva turned to the one person she knew had the strength to finish it off.

"Matt! This is your chance bro, END THIS SUCKER!!"
