After numerous delays, GSC Game World released the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl in 2007 and has since put out two follow-ups to capitalize on that game's critical success. The first, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, arrived in 2008 and operated as a prequel to the events in the original game, while this year's Call of Pripyat served as an extension to the end of Shadow of Chernobyl.

Chernobyl's long winter has not yet ended.

Now, GSC Game World is gearing up to deliver a sequel proper to Shadow of Chernobyl, announcing today that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will arrive in 2012. In announcing the game's development, GSC Game World also noted that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise has now sold more than 4 million units worldwide.

The studio did not provide much by way of gameplay details for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. However, GSC Game World did say that the game would benefit from an all-new multiplatform game engine that's being built in house. CEO Sergiy Grygorovych also characterized the game as "the next chapter" in the series.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe takes place in an alternate reality set in the infamous city of Chernobyl, which suffered a nuclear reactor meltdown in 1986. In the game, the town is subjected to a second dose of nuclear fallout, spawning a rash of hideously mutated monsters that now occupy the postapocalyptic town.

first off, i checked and couldnt find anything on this site about this, so if i missed it im sorry, but if not then i find it odd considering how many stalker fans there are on this site.

anyway, im excited. it looks as though they are planning a multiplatform release for the game, and normally id be worried because many companies needlessly dumb down games when they make them for consoles just so that they can appeal to a broader audience.

but gsc has done nothing but try to improve stalker with each iteration. clear sky didnt turn out too well but they tried to make it better at least. and call of pripyat was fantastic, combining the best of soc and cs without any of the bad stuff (aside from the story and dialogue of course, but then again i dont know anyone who cared about either anywhere near as much as the rest of the game).

I dunno if I would buy it for anything other than the PC. Most of the other ones required a bit of outside help before they were somewhat close to being stable.

Although I suppose I cant imagine people wanting to play things of the sort of Oblivion or Fallout 3 with out mods, yet they seem to do so.

In any case these games have proven to be pretty reliably entertaining, I dont see the next edition bucking that trend.

Well, when S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 does not crash as often as the prequel, I will happily wait for this game. I hope I won't get the 'same shit again with better gfx'-experience when it is released. o_O

Please be on the 360, please be on the 360, please be on the 360...
But don't dumb it down.

Nice

Though I wonder how many games can they make about Chernobyl before it starts being unprofitable.
I think it would be cool to see them try a new setting but keeping the gameplay.

I really hope that they keep the excellent combat system and RPG elements from the first three in their transition to multi-platform. I imagine they'll keep the RPG elements, but I honestly fear for the gunplay. Don't let me down GSC!

I can tell if they do not focus on the PC it won't be near as good, mainly because they are going to mainstream the STALKER formula. So I am kinda disappointed for it to be multiplatform, and this reminds me to the System Shock 2-BioShock case. Also I would have preferred a new IP.

Why does everyone think just because it's multiplatform, it's already shit? Fallout 3 was multiplatform, and most people liked that. Mass Effect 2 was on more than one platform. Your all in love with that.

Have you played S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? The whole reason people are being pessimistic about it is because the gunplay was more drawn out than most shooters, with the player character being rather weak and thus having to take battles slowly, constantly using lean (something most console games lack) to peek out from cover. It's quite likely that some of that will have to be dropped to appeal to the console audience, however I remain optimistic that if any dev team can succeed in the task of making it multi-platform without a lot of compromise for us whiny PC folk, it's GSC.
