In Mass Effect;

When you have to sacrifice one of your squad on virmire. Even worse if the person you sacrifice is guarding the bomb, then the closing cinematic has them watching the ship fly away... Made me quite sad.

In Dragon Age;

When Duncan and Cailan are killed due to Logain's treachery. Then at the final scene at the landsmeet, where Logain accepts his fate. I really didn't want to kill him then, most morally straining choice I had to make. Killing connnor would have been in there, if it werent for Eamon's wife... annoying little Orlesian.

Fable 2

Your dog dies.
Oh, you ain't kiddin'! I saw that happen and I just went " Oh NO you did NOT just kill him! Oh, you're dead! I don't care how good I am, you're going to DIE!"

I said the same thing when that bandit in the beginning kicked him.

The ending of Killzone 2.

The Helghast president is dead due to your angry squadmate. You walk outside, oh look, here's every fucking ship on Helghan full of soldiers to come and kill your asses

Shit. Just. Got. Real.

Dragon Age: Origins
When Duncan kills the bloke who doesn't want to drink the blood at the start. That really set the tone for the game, though in my opinion the game's corny storyline in-between the prologue and ending dimished its value a bit.

Mass Effect 2
The suicide mission as a whole. I'm really pleased at how they handled the build up toward that point and how your choices of which teammate did what had an impact (though it wasn't hard to pick the right ones using common sense). The last battle with the epic music and all really got me, mostly because BioWare said multiple times that Shep can die. In comparison to Dragon Age, I thought ME2 felt much darker and serious.

TIE Fighter
I was reminded of this when I read scnj's post on the first page. The part when you are betrayed by Harkov was extremely awesome, even more so considering that the guy had (if I remember) a bloody star destroyer while you were in a basic TIE Fighter that could get shot down in 2 hits. TIE Fighter is a good example of a game with terrific gameplay and storyline set in the Star Wars setting, something we unfortunately don't see often these days.

The Battle Of A Thousand Heartless in KH2 ... that is until you realize you can make it easy by using QTE, and gets boring over how little of a threat they actually represent.

Final Fantasy X When you
invade Yuna's wedding

Project Zero II & III (Fatal Frame):
when the kusabi first appears

In Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 in D.C. when I fought Titanium Man.
I died and thought, "S**t just got real." I then proceeded to die about a half dozen more times.

I loved him and I hated when I had to do the
Purification
and when he got killed. That guild really had such a great story.

Had the quote existed in the late 90's I would have to say When Aeris Died in FF7. As a kid, a main character in your game dies so hardcore you don't get to play them again.

Nuking Megaton. Something about obliterating one of the last bastions of humanity left in the wasteland really drove home the feeling of desolateness.

Off topic: does this really need spoiler tags these days? I mean, who hasn't played this game yet?

Seeing Sovereign, the reaper "ship," right before it takes off from the planet where Nihlus is killed (the name escapes me)

Start of Playthrough 2
