A simple thread really.
Those 2 unique RTS have been largely ignored (the former so much to the point of being "one of the most underappreciated games of all time") and there are cases where the reviewers that DO care to play it dont enlight much on the problems they may have (COUGHyahtzeeCOUGH). Is it really that hard to give an honest opinion on what does and doesnt work? Do you have to have an expertice on RTS games or every genre those games made off to deal with something this unique?

I ask you, the gamers, your opinion on the subject. We should at least start with what those games did right and wrong just at first sight without any knowledge of RTS or of what a genre even IS. Then we compare the games in a more global sence, like what did manage to innovate both inside and outside their genres.

I can't speak for Sacrifice, but I can tell you that the RTS elements of Brutal Legend are what killed it. Its confusing, the game in general is a clusterfuck during those points, The units are difficult to coordinate and control and.....its just a really underwhelming experience, especially who played the demo thinking "WOW! TIM SCHAFER IS MAKING A HACK AND SLASH GAME!" and were then shocked to learn that you'll be doing very little of the hacking and slashing.

The Pros? The game is hilarious, well written, the soundtrack is kick ass and the voice acting is top notch. In my opinion, this game is one of the worst things Tim has ever worked on, but even then, its still a pretty unique experience.

I have never heard of Sacrifice, so I can't really comment on that, but I did just finish Brutal Legend, so I'll give my thoughts on that.

Brutal Legend's biggest problem is that it's over-ambitious. The game is full of great ideas and great game mechanics (I even liked the RTS parts of it). The problem is that the game is too short to explore any of the mechanics in depth, and that leaves the game feeling half-baked and unfocused. If the game were 2-3 times as long, it would have been one of my favorite games of all time, but as it was, it just tried to do too much in too little time.

I understand that the single player campaing is supposed to make thing easy to understand for when you get into multiplayer (the main purpose of the game anyway, acording to Tim) thus its just long enough for a "tutorial", rather than being a branching storyline with multiple endings from the start thanks to the focus on player choice.

One of the designers of of Sacrifice actually was part of the developement team of Brutal Legend so you may be surpriced that they share part of the problems that game had. It would have helped a lot if the team that made "Sacrifice" (once know as SHINY Entertaiment, creators of Earthworm Jim, MDK and Messiash) had the power of the Internet and mass social network from years after 2000. The feedback would have fleshed out most of the original game.

I guess that BL could have solved that problem of overambition if EA didnt fuck up the money with lots of adverticement that DIDNT show how the game was played.

Brütal Legend was one of the games i forced myself through because of it`s setting and the tone. Besides of the love for metal this game has nothing that makes me want to play it again. As for RTS in general i rather play the first Warcraft again, alone for the top notch orc voice acting.

I only played Brütal Legend, and as already said, the graphical theme, story, voice acting and the fact that the game is just hilarious is what's good about it. The Hack 'n slash part of it is amazing too, in my opinion.

Where it fails is the RTS and the length. The RTS part seemed really innovative and amazing at first but then you just lose grip on what you're doing. I was always stuck between running around and killing whatever I could by myself, or staying back summoning. The RTS part felt like a chore, not something you'd do if you could skip it.

I have a question though.. If an AI controlled the RTS part (the unit control etc etc), would it have made for a much better gameplay mode? That way you'd just feel like a single piece in a big chaotic puzzle, hackin' 'n slashin' your way alongside your AI controlled armies.

I rented brutal legends and just played the multiplayer with my friend as I was really good at the hack and slash element and he as good at picking the right units, so I was able to easily fight my way through the enemy players and minions while my friends coordinated everything. I really enjoyed the experience and would like to see a more flesh out version of this game play to be made. I mean if you added picking a variety of minions to spawn, controlling them and being able to combine them with you character moba games would pretty similar just with hot bar fighting instead of hack and slash and without control points.

Is brutal legend the game with that rockstar guy?

Sacrifice is fucking epic! Nuff said, the only complaint I can think of is that it's fucking difficult, and it's graphics are not brilliant...

Still, I'd take sacrifice over brutal legend any day.

Wont that make it like a Tower Defense game?

Sacrifice was actually good. Sums it up for me.
Pretty much this. Interestingly enough, I was actually just describing Sacrifice to a friend of mine last night.

Is the diference THAT strong or its just the after effect of the hype of Brutal Legend?

Is sacrifice really as obscure as people say? I walked into the game store back when it came out and grabbed it of the shelf. I had no idea it was under the radar.

Anyway, sacrifice was awesome. How does a game with Tim Curry, Sarevok, and the guy from Raymond go unnoticed?

Brutal Legend is a terrible terrible RTS (seriously, to win every battle build a few headbangers, run to the enemy stage with them, facemelter the enemy's initial troops and knock down their first two fan stands, set your rally at their front door and churn one unit forever) with an epic soundtrack.

I heard when they were still going to publish it Activision wanted it to be a Guitar Hero game. And, frankly, a Guitar Hero game with that soundtrack would have been absolute metal heaven.

There is just too much talent in the game to mention. There have been a couple of times that recognized Tony's voice and it brought me back to sacrifice. I know he has been in a lot of things, but I always think of Mithras when I here him.
