Romeo and Juliet, anyone?
Basically defined the idea of a sad ending for me.
Sad but good endings dude, not just sad (unless you count it as such).
Romeo and Juliet is totally a sad but good. The lovers sacrificed themselves for their forbidden love (granted this all could have been avoided if they weren't practically looking for an excuse to off themselves, but that's a different thread), And yet, because of their sacrifice, their warring families see the error of their ways, and what tragedy their pointless feud has caused, and decide together to cease with it, and erect a monument in honour of Romeo and Juliet.

Watchmen: Basically, Veidt fakes an alien invasion in New York that, while killing half the population, unites the US and USSR against a percieved common enemy and thus prevents a nuclear way. Rorschach, refusing to compromise, leaves with the intention of revealing the truth, but allows Dr. Manhattan to kill him before he can do so. Afterwards, Veidt asks Manhattan if he did the right thing in the end, to which Manhattan replies, "Nothing ever ends", before leaving the Earth for another galaxy

I am Legend: Neville completes the antidote, but when him, Anna and Ethan get chased down by the zombies, Neville uses a hand grade to destroy the attackers at the cost of his life, while Anna and Ethan escape with the antidote, saving the rest of humanity.

They're good if they manage to be fulfilling, a father dying for his family is a sad ending, but if the family gets away safe it still wont leave you feeling empty and stuff. Kind of a bad description but I hope you get my point :p

Cowboy Bebop
Suicide run to avenge the death of his lover that ended with the famous "Bang!" scene. I was originally mad, but in retrospect, it was a fantastic ending that has yet to be paralleled as far as I know.
Bastion: Reverting back
As it seems to notice, the Calamity did happen again, but the Kid and the rest enjoyed an okay time before hand, to lose it all again.
Also, the part with Zulf (carry or kill) was a good pre-end end.
Dawn of War: Soulstorm;
Boreale died there.
If not, then Borealum--which is just sad, not good.

(Capcha says 'sweet dreams.' Does that mean I'm going to die, or that my dreams are going to end sad with good background?

Uhm...

It thought it was kind of obvious.

In the good ending, Yuri dies. I mean, sure, it ends with his spirit sent back to the beginning of Shadow Hearts 1, when he was most happy in his life (because that's when he met Alice). It's kind of weird and open-ended, because you don't know if he's going to be able to change the future. But it doesn't change the fact that he had to die to save his own soul.

In the bad ending, he lives, but he loses his soul and becomes nothing more but husk without memories.

Persona 3 because...

Protagonist sacrifices them-self so that they can stop the world's negative emotions from causing "The Fall" which is the game's version of "End of the World", fulfilling his ultimate destiny and bringing an end to the Dark Hour.

And Shadow of the Colossus because...

Wander's deal to bring back Mono comes with the hefty price of Dormin, an ancient demon that he made the deal with in the first place, has returned to full strength because with all the Colossi being killed by Wander, 16 creatures that held Dormin's power, Wander now holds that power so Dormin uses him as a vessel that allows him to return to his shadowy form. Lord Emon uses the ancient sword which casts a whirlwind of light to suck in both Dormin and Wander. The game ends on Mono waking up and finding a horned baby in the pool that the whirlwind was just in.

Dark Souls has two.

In the ending where you link the fire, you burn horribly for all eternity, but you prolong the Age of Fire and possibly cure the Darksign. However, Frampt and Gwyndolin may have been manipulating you.

In the Dark Lord ending, you break out of the cycle and become the new Dark Lord, but it's not certain what that means, what happens to you or if the Darksign is cured.

Also, The Darkness, even though it was railroaded, District 9, even though it could be ambiguous as to what actually happens, and The Big Lebowski, where...

Jeff Bridges fails to investigate a kidnapping that never happened

Probably Code Geass which I think had one of the best endings of any piece of fictional media ever.

I'm not upset because ME3's ending was unhappy. I'm disappointed because it was badly written. And because there was nothing to set apart an ending achieved at the apex of a trilogy run from an ending achieved playing ME3 alone. And because it's full of holes like: how are the two I took with me to the lift now alive on the Normandy, when everyone who came with me was reported to have died? Aren't they dead anyway if the planet they've crashed on doesn't support their physiology? How come the relay effect cripples the Normandy when it just washes over the ships and soldiers elsewhere?

Eugh. I could go on and on. It's just not very well done. I have trouble believing that the writers responsible for it call themselves professionals. I've certainly read better fanfiction.

Anyway anyway.. On topic.. Sad endings that are good..

Halo: Reach

I'm no longer a big Halo fan, but I thought Reach was a standout. Knowing from the start that nothing you could do would save your life or the lives of the people you were fighting alongside gave every moment something uncommon. The last stand qualifies as a sad but good end.

Not going to say ending. After so many years of reading the books for it to finally end on a note like that made me BAWWW for days.

Halo 3 - Miranda Keyes is dead, Sgt Johnson is dead, John is stranded in space and listed as KIA, Cortana is starting to go rampant, and it was the end (at the time) of my favourite gaming franchise of all time.

I'd hardly say that about FEAR 2. As soon as you look at your squad in that game, it's just a matter of asking "who's going first?" (I personally thought it was the black guy)

OT: Uhhhhhhh..........

uh...

Shadow of the Collesusiffksosn (I'm to lazy to implement the built in spell check)

That one was good, I guess.

What? That was barely little more than a "It was just a dream". And you say CoD4 was bad?

Captcha: Crocodile Tears.

Well, I think I'm done starting pointless internet disagreements for the night.

Beckett himself is captured by Alma and is raped by her, and ends up becoming the father to her child. As bad as this all is, I still consider the ending good.
Now I know the Fear series is fucked up...... but geez..... thats just.... well... fucked up.

OT: I would have said RDR but someone already told me the ending and I wasnt sad at all. Also I would have said Fallout 3 but I chose the asshole option (I saved myself and gave control of the wastelands to the president or enclave or whoever it was). Soooo not many sad games I can think of...... or movies come to think about it, mainly because I always get spoiled.

Over dramatic people yelling the whole time, turn off all other sounds and listen to them yell for no reason its actually quite funny, also call of duty was a joke. designed for people who enjoy flashy explosions. that whole "oh noes you die from nuke" thing, honestly i dont even remember plaything that bit.

Also "it was just a dream" what are you talking about? that is not how it ended >.>

American History X has an amazing but depressing ending
The protaganists younger brother has fallen in with a really bad racist crowd because of his actions, and towards the end of the film as the younger brother realises how stupid the whole issue of race is, he is killed because of the environment created by his brother and his own actions.
Literally the only film I have ever cried at.

o.o huh ... i didn't see it as all that sad i guess, since Yuri was actually happy, sides, i figured time travel. would make sense given where Karin ended up, and who with.
