Sad to see them go...

So, I just got home from work and saw on the news that Sergio Bonelli passed away. "Who the fuck is Sergio Bonelli ? " you ask, "And why should I care?". Well to answer your first question, he's a well known (obviously :p) comic book writer and publisher, creator of characters like Zagor and Mister No . He also funded many young writers and pencilers, and I wouldn't call him "European Stan Lee" out of respect to other great comic book artists, but in my mind he was pretty damn close. Now, why should you care ? I dunno, most of you are not familiar with his work, and therefore probably don't care, which is completely fine. His work had great impact on many generations; mostly in Italy and Balkans area (myself included) and I just wanted to honor him in this silly way.

So, just to make some sense of this thread I ask you fellow Escapists, do you have someone you hold in high regard, and would be sad to see him go? Someone who had huge impact on your life, or was a great influence to you, but has sadly passed away? I'm not talking about close family or friends (although you can post whatever you want), but people you probably never met, but have influenced you artistically, philosophically or you just have fond memories of them.

I was greatly saddened when I found out that Michael Turner died. Since it was his beautiful artwork (specifically Fathom) that got me into graphic novels in the first place.

Sounds like a very inspiring person :)

I would be really bummed if Josh Homme (guitarist, singer, songwriter, artist) bit the bullet, simply because I find his work and attitude so intriguing; he's been an inspiration for my poetry and pretty much the reason I picked up a guitar. He's hailed as one of the greatest modern 'Rock Stars' of our time, yet he's very unlike that stereotype.

Oliver Postgate. for those who don't know, this man was the genius who created bagpuss and the clangers. he also narrated these shows, and did a lot of the characters voice work.

my favourite tv show as a child was the clangers, and it's a big dose of nostalgia for me, so i was quite saddened to hear of his death a few years ago =\

Ah yes, it would be a damn shame. I love the work he's done with Them Crooked Vultures and how you can always hear his influence when he works as a producer.

I was depressed when I heard George Carlin died.
There aren't a great many things I can say "changed my life." This includes George. However, I will say that he acted as a catalyst, and helped me to become who I was inevitably going to become much sooner than I would have otherwise. He's the one who introduced me to critical thinking. He's the only guy I could ever refer to as a hero of mine.

Terry Pratchett.

I will be both sad, and relieved, when he finally leaves us... sad because he is a wonderful man, with a creative mind that has brought joy to myself and many others.. relieved because he sufferes from early onset Alzheimers and is, sadly, likely to be in a bad way by the time it happens :(

Sadly, I have a feeling we may have read his last books, as he is struggling to "write" these days. I hope for his sake that he is allowed to pass in as dignified manner as possible, as I believe is his wish.

Well it's been said right above me but bugger it. Terry Pratchett. That man is a legend. I only hope that he isn't hounded by press towards the end. Not just for his sake, I'd prefer to remember him as he is now.

As for other people, it would sadden me to learn of the deaths of any of the remaining Monty Python crew. It's already enough of a shame that Graham Chapman isn't alive today, but it will feel strange to me when the rest die during my lifetime.

Yeah I know what you mean. Once he's gone (hopefully many years from now) I'll really miss John Cleese's moustache and that grin. Also Terry Gilliam has done some fucking awesome movies.

If the world lost Stan Sakai, I'd be pretty upset.
He's written what's, in my opinion, one of the greatest comic series ever.
Usagi Yojimbo is essentially what got me into learning about history, since it's a realistic representation of feudal Japan, just with humanoid animals. Since I was way into Redwall at the time (second grade), it clicked for me.
I suppose the themes were far more mature, but a lot of that went over my head because "Samurai rabbit just took down all those dudes!".
Of course, a lot of the knowledge stuck, thanks to the great writing and historical notes in the backs of the books.

When the world loses an old series Doctor Who, or a companion, I always feel sad. They were so good, way back when.

Oh, David Attenborough, of course.

I was pretty upset when I discovered that Brian Jacques, author of the Redwall series, died back in February.
I'm a big fan of the Redwall series and was sad to see them go, too.

Chiko.

To me, it will always be Chiko Time. #_#

No okay, I'm being silly. I'd be pretty sad if a comedian I liked died. They're my kinda heroes. ^^

It is a shame. Those books were a big part of my childhood, as I said in my above post.
I read most of them, which was pretty impressive, considering the other 8-year-olds were just starting on The Boxcar Children and such.

Satoshi Kon for me, that really sucked. He made amazing films, and his stuff was some of the first mature anime I'd ever seen (Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfathers). And none of it is "adult for the sake of adult". Paprika took on a whole new meaning after his passing. At least he has one piece left to be finished, I can't wait for The Dream Machine.
