...You should play FFX2. And I mean REEEEAAAAALY play it. like do everything. Do it NOW!
I have. Worst sequel ever, they ruined FFX completely. I blame Enix as the only thing that changed is that Squaresoft joined with them.

Two excellent choices. Though in RfaD, the only one that really chokes me up is Sara's story.

---

And for something completely different that pretty much had me on the verge of crying before it even really started was the beginning of Up. Damn, that was some intense shit. So well done.
Pixar caught me off guard with UP, the opening was an emotional punch in the face. Whenever the old guy looked at the adventure book i just lost it.

The 'Final Cut' of Blade Runner. Jesus tap-dancing christ, was that depressing.

"It's too bad she won't live, but then again, who does?"

Oh, and more recently, Red Dead Redemption's was pretty sad, and I haven't beaten it yet, but I've got a hunch Halo: Reach isn't going to have the happiest of endings.

OMG Shiloh. Never seen the movie myself, but god, damn, what a hell of a story that book was.

Another one that this jogged my memory of was Rascal.
Brilliant story. Depressing ending. Not so much of tragedy, but the simple struggle of letting go...
If anyone here has never read this story, dammit, DO IT NOW!!!

Red Dead: Redemption for obvious reasons and Dragon Age.
On my first playthrough I took the female human noble and had romanced Alistair. We were set up to become kind and queen. Then at the end, he decides to kill himself in the duel with the archdemon because I didn't want him and Morgain having sex. I survived, but the last heir to the throne and my husband died.
Also, Bridge to Teribithia. I mean seriously, what was the moral in that story? Don't get your hopes up cause you're just gonna die eventually and nothing ever goes right in life? Yeah, great story.

Everyone dies :(
Yeah, I was hoping even just you would survive. Kat's death was soooooo pointless though...

Well, it wasn't the ending that was sad, but any thread about sadness deserves a mention of Clannad and Clannad after story.

Alt Text: They'd use that episode of Futurama with Fry's dog, but even spambots cry at that.

I guess I'll be topical and mention Halo: Reach had a deflating ending. You know, the after credits mission? Sad.

Edit: Oh lame. That's been mentioned a bunch already.

Alternative Answer: The animes Berserk and Rah-Xephon were both pretty messed up.

David Tennant's farewells in "Dr. Who: The End of Time, Part 2." Between atmosphere, context, and music I was almost in tears.
Yes, a million times yes. As someone who loved David Tennant as the Doctor, watching him go was heartbreaking. What was most heartbreaking was the fear and sorrow in his face during the transformation, and him saying "I don't want to go".

Just finished Red Dead Redemption not 30 minutes ago. Dude... it was spoiled for me, but still...

Edit: I know it's not sad compared to others, but I tend to think of things as less sad over time. Things are only sad the first time for me, so the most recent sad thing I've seen is the saddest thing I've seen.
This is what I came here to say. Also, it was spoiled for me as well. Anyway, it's less about what happened and more about how it happened.

There's a Chinese film called ' To Live' The ending is not necessarily the saddest in and of itself;

However, the main characters undergo so much tragedy, loss, and suffering throughout five decades the film takes place in, the bittersweet finale that shows a wisdom born only through a life of loss and acceptance really tugs at one's heart.

True, one may dismiss the end as being false, as the characters did not sink into despair entirely, but there is a cold weight of bitterness and pain on their shoulders that they must carry for the rest of their lives - and do what they can to spare their offspring from the anguish.

It was a very human picture. I was surprisingly touched.

Addendum- when I first viewed the film, the color display on the projector refused to work, making the film black and white. It actually served to heighten the immersion. Weird...

I agree, I just watched the last episode again today. I almost cried, given:
Nunally's reaction once Lelouch reveals the Zero Requiem, and that no one but her and Suzaku will know the truth.
im still going with the Lelouch is alive Thesus thats out there, because it makes sense.
