Mine's a bit more personal, in that it might not appear sad to just anyone who listens to it, but for me it represents the period of time that I discovered it in and how the subject matter was so fitting.

It's called "Forever Gone" and is written and performed by electronic artists "Mind in a Box".

I don't know how to embed video or anything fancy. Apologies for that.

Ruby's Arms by Tom Waits breaks my heart every time.

I dont know, I dont listen to sad songs.
I've got a sister with dystonia and an uncle with down syndrome. That last one really gets to me personally. Fiddler on the Green is another good one by the same band.

Whiskey Lullaby. Girl and guy break up. Both get depressed. Guy gets drunk, smashes bottle over his head, commits suicide. Girl gets depressed over the guy's death, gets drunk, smashes bottle over her head, commits suicide. Both are buried under the same tree.

It's slow, depressing, and kills the mood in any situation. I can't stand it.

Used to not think much of this song when I would hear it on the radio, then I saw them live and heard every word and I almost cried. I mean I wasn't even in a break up situation or in a bad relationship - it was just honest words.

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's life
but why - WHY - why can't it be mine?!"

Well for me personally it's Steven Ray Vaughan playing Little Wing just because I associate that song with sadness.

'We Have All the Time in the World", by Louis Armstrong. Not because the song itself is sad; it's not. However, when this song plays at the end of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", it never fails to make me tear up.

I could also say Dance With the Devil by IT too, but that's more disgusting sad than just plain sad like this.

I am surprised this hasn't come up yet.

I know this is the cover version, but this song fits Johnny Cash like an old glove.

Though, bad things always seem to happen to me after I've listened to it.

Tim Buckley wrote it before he died at 28. (Father of Jeff Buckley who also died, at 30, so that's gotta count for points on the sad-o-meter).

This is also a good version -

And from Jeff, his son, who was surely thinking of his father when he sung this -
