Ok I'm sure this has been done before but what the hey, lets give it another go. I'll go first:

Now the death of Brigadier General Maes Hughes was particularly heart-wrenching. In Brotherhood he actually dies quite early but in the original series he's dies about halfway through. In either case, he made an impression on every person that watched the show and his character was particularly well developed as each episode passed on. Kind, light-hearted, brave and downright hilarious are only a few ways of describing him. But the fact that he left behind a wife and a three year old daughter was pretty much the last straw before everyone started bawling their eyes out.

So share with us your tales of sorrow involving the death of our favourite supporting characters.

Well his name is H- ...oh, done already.

Next on my list is:

Jiraiya from Naruto. He was really likeable character, and as cringe-worthy as some of his ninja "training" with Naruto was, the relationship between the two characters developed well and felt genuine. For such a mainstay character, it was really a shock to see him defeated by Pain. What really made me shed a tear though was watching Naruto's reaction to it and see him try to pull through (the scene with the two joined popsicles really pulls at the heartstrings).

I just realised I'm glad I came to this thread early, else I may have had a show I'm watching or want to watch potentially ruined for me. Good thing I already knew of the death that the OP referred to!

Okay guys, protip for using the spoiler box: State outside of the spoiler box what anime you are spoiling. Otherwise nobody knows what the fuck they're getting when they click the box. It may be an anime they've already seen, it may not be. So do it like this.

My spoiler comes from Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

HUGHES. I know this one will probably be listed a million times, but mother of God, I should have known they'd kill him off the moment he said he had a little girl. Such a wonderful character...and they had to take him! D:<

I'm going for a manga just to spite your title, and also because the anime kinda sucked.

Judeau from Berserk - Killed by demons.

It's not just that he dies, because I sorta knew he would, it's how. He dies trying to protect the woman he loves who doesn't even have the slightest notion that he loves her. And his dying thoughts are that she never did and never will see him as anything other than a comrade in arms, and that she will now very likely come to the same gruesome and nightmarish end.

That whole Eclipse chapter sure knew how to stick it in and break it off.

Hmmm, well mine was taken in the OP so...

The Tachikoma at the end of season 1 and similarly in season 2. I'd say first was worse though, as it was more original and a little more literal.

Sayaka although technically she doesn't really "die".

Nina Tucker (reminded by a later post about this one). Her death was just horrible.

Looking at my relatively small anime collection, I can't think of many others.

Beaten to it. I honestly don't know why people don't realise that putting a spoiler box without saying what subject is inside is almost as bad as not having one. The choices are either clicking on it and potentially being spoilered anyway, or not reading the post at all.

Gonna be honest here and have to say Shirley from Code Geass.

Nothing but a schoolgirl with a crush wanting to give support to a man with a lot on his shoulders. Even knowing all that he has done.

There are other sad deaths in this show, if I'm remembering correctly, but this one hit the spot for some reason.

This is the first one I thought of.She really is one of the few in the show that is almost sinless.

Other than that there is

Maya's mother Haru. She gets sick and goes blind after reluctantly abandoning Maya. Then she's kept from knowing anything about her daughter by the very company her daughter acts for.Once she does, she escapes, gets injured and finally dies in a movie theater playing one of Maya's movies. To top it off may's company was just about to reunite them.

Battle Tendency, you know the one.
Caesar, and how Wham just respects the sacrifice. Fabulous sidekick who ends up like his grandfather.

In my opinion it's: TRIGUN spoiler in the tags.

Wolfwood

I bawled my eyes out the first time I witnessed that character's death.

Though
Sayaka
Puella Magi Madoka Magica came really close to hitting me as hard just because of HOW it happened.

There are many moments in Clannad: After Story that skillfully exploited my emotions. One stark example was:

Ushio's death.

Sometimes anime seems to hold no surprises anymore, so I enjoyed being so utterly shocked by this one. Seemed like Tomoyo had already experienced more than his fair share of tragedy, but then this.

Kamina, so heroic, unexpected, then misleading and all that does is make it sadder.
It's the kind of thing that makes manly tears even in the most stoic of men.
Just the first that came to mind but damn if it ain't a good one.

Mine's the same as OP's, and many other posters, both already here and to come.
That death was heart wrenching.

Oh, don't remind me. That was horrid. (the deaths, not the series)

Also, kudos on your username and avatar, made me lol.
Plus, it's always nice to see a Transmetropolitan fan.
