I think I can explain it easily:

i is an imaginary number, that is the result of the square root of negative one.

pi[s/]e[/s] is an irrational number
yeaaaaah....

Also, I get the maths joke, not altogether a very complex one, but amusing nonetheless. Man, I need to get me some... what are they called? Friends? Anyone know where I can download some?

Alright. What does it mean? :p

Actually no, don't bother explaining. I probably still wouldn't get it. >_>

Words we're always my stronger point... Numbers make my brain switch off.
Pi is categorized as an irrational number. This is because it is a number which cannot be expressed as a fraction x/y, where x and y are integers. Integers are formed by the natural numbers including 0 (0, 1, 2, 3, ...) together with the negatives of the non-zero natural numbers (−1, −2, −3, ...).

Small i is the symbol of an imaginary unit. As in, a number that is not real. The imaginary unit is often loosely referred to as the "square root of −1" which, if one is restricted to real numbers, is inanswerable and becomes a 'divided by zero' kind of situation. Most calculators that are not programmed with imaginary numbers return a 'cannot compute' or 'math error' when presented with the "sqrt of -1" calculation.

Essentially, in the picture both are ordering the other to be something they cannot possibly be.

you should both be happy that you have friends and lives of your own
Assuming I do, but I don't, sadly. Failing at math doesn't even help, my love for sci-fi and fantasy must compensate for it.

I laughed at that joke, as did all my friends, as we all do maths/science degrees. I do have a life, just a really crap one :)

One of my favourites (a friend of mine told it to me some weeks ago, I laughed. A lot.):

Two atoms are walking down the road when one accidentally bumps into the other.

First atom: "Oh no! I think you've stolen some of my electrons!"

Second atom: "Are you sure?"

First atom: "I'm positive!"

A neon atom walks into a bar. Before he can get all the way in however, the bartender yells out:

"Oh no, nothing for you here! You're already full up!"

As soon as I saw this, I burst out laughing.

Math can be so funny sometimes.

This too:

It's not exactly a complex math joke there...but I'm not a loser, I swear.
*sarcasm* of course you aren't...
I learned about real and rational numbers in seventh grade. The thread should be "If you don't understand this joke, you can't think at a seveth grade level."

[small]And what in god's name are people doing on this site if they can't be described as nerds?[/small]

I find myself making TF2 jokes at work, even though no-one gets them. Sometimes when I have to get a shopping trolley (I work in a supermarket) I say "Ve must push lietle kart!" and every now and then I catch myself muttering "Spah sappin' mah <insert whatever it is that's broken or not working or failing>"
I do this virtually every day at school.
As do I.
Ditto.

I saw this on a nerds t-shirt in my Biology lab class once;

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

I lol'd.
