Hey guys, it's Snot with a topic of his own for once!

I noticed no one was really chatting about Samus and her new kicks in Smash Brothers, call me a massive sci-fi nerd but I'm looking at them and scratching my head wondering "Why?" amongst other things. Here's an image:

My thoughts on them are:
Heels are stupid for combat regardless of in built rockets.
They're not fitting with the lore, the character.
They look like repurposed nerf guns. :|
There's better ideas.
It goes against the original design of Samus's Zero Suit.

I figure if anything, she'd salvage her boots from her power armor like so:

Added kicking power, already with some beefy upgrades.

I don't know where Zero Suit came from so I could be wrong here but...

Zero Suit is what she wears underneath her regular armor, correct?

Could someone explain how that giant spike of a heel fits into this footing?

Unless her foot is made out of a jelly-fish like material for easy collapsing, I'm not sure how her new stripper heel is fitting. There's a minor heel in the suit but there's no way that her giant spike is fitting in that thing...

The Zero Suit is from Metroid Zero Mission, a remake of the first game. At one point she takes off her armor as she's flying off and her ship is shot down and you're left to try and find better equipment in the suit leaving you to take 10x damage and unable to kill because you have stun pistol.

The suit is for interfacing with her power armor and survival outside of that.

Yes it's a good question where she keeps those things, unless they're subscribing to Other M logic where the suit and such materializes from no where which is the only case of it happening.

I really hate high heels in games. So yeah, I think it looks bad as well.

Even in real life, there are very few women who actually succeed to look sexy or elegant while wearing heels imo. And that goes x100 for games, especially fighting games, where it just looks retarded.

Hey, heels can hurt. Depends on whether your target is your arches or your archnemesis. For what it's worth, she's representing Other M fairly consistently, beauty mark and all. I noticed she's wearing matching bracelets. Are those combat-functional too?

I am consistently surprised that people complain about Samus' character when for a good chunk of her games she didn't have one and then when she finally was given one it was awful.

But yeah they look dumb, though the whole Zero Suit thing always did look kind of silly.

Other M logic
I think we just found your answer, unfortunately.

The smart thing to do would be to let Other M and everything referencing it die, but... well, Nintendo is nothing if not clingy to its titles.

Didn't Other M also given her heels? That would sort of explain where they got it from, even if they changed the general design a little bit.

Anyways, I agree that they look odd and not very fitting for Samus. The changes to the color scheme could be a nice touch, but it's hard to appreciate when they are showcasing the most ridiculous aspect of her new costume.

I do have to laugh, though, at the fact that they basically gave her the same heels that the artist said was too high when they were conceptualizing zero suit Samus however many years ago.

I know, that shade of yellow with that shade of blue?

Er- I mean, yeah- Not combat appropriate at all.

Her character was very much defined by her actions and subtle things done. The way she entered rooms with her menacing stance, the way she looked around the chozo world in Prime after everything was done and she flew off, how she reacted to Ridley when she first encountered him years later in Zero Mission. How she took in the baby metroid in 2, handed it off to scientists and went back to their aid when under attack, how she handled the federation when she found out about the metroid hatchery in Fusion.

I'm not saying it's the best means of defining a character, really subjective but I think it was well done considering the games and their goals.

I don't know about that. I thought Prime 3 did some pretty interesting stuff with Samus vs. Dark Samus and their dynamic. There's also a pretty cool video on how there's a lot of rage in her character and how it possibly consumes her, as well as her comrade. It's done by one of our fellow Escapists who goes by the name of EmceeProphit on YouTube [small](I forgot your username here, sorry buddy! D:)[/small].

Link, because I don't feel like embedding a video and shit.

OT: From the looks of it, the heels actually are an external feature for her zero suit and actually attach to her feet. Which I believe helps better reinforce the question FUCKING WHY!

Personally, I think if a woman can walk in stilettos, let alone fight in them, she instantly the most badass person I can think of.

Sorry, I don't know why I did that. I'll just say that the heels are really freaking annoying, though somewhat functional. Now I'll just show myself out in shame.

Who cares. Smash brothers isn't really a big game, nor is it really metroid canon. It's a cute little game that people play couch coop.

Also, she is clearly wearing those over her suit, not as a part of it. They look like braces.

While we're on the subject, could someone explain how her morphball works? I feel like *that* question still hasn't been answered. Its explanation could also be the reason for that heel issue. Maybe her suit takes use of more than 3 dimensions and stores things in those dimensions. It would explain why she's able to hold hundreds of missiles and bombs there.

last time i saw this discussion it was full of people pretending that those who had an issue with the heels were taking it out of proportion. while it's hardly the end of the world, i do think the heels are stupid.

minus a huge chunk of the endless vulgar rage i decided to add to it, i said the following:

"tacking extraneous accentuations of sexuality to a character whose sexuality is only notable for not being of note, cannot be easily construed as anything but objectifying a character for no valid reason than to appeal to the type of asshole who calls an anime character their waifu, or has a separate hard drive partition for their would-be-impressively-large-if-this-wasn't-a-hentai-collection hentai collection. i already play blazblue, i get enough of this horseshit."

basically i'm sick of being reminded that these douchebags are around. it's just like anime pandering to otaku and killing itself.

Unless they're going to have some B.S. reason for them, like Portal Girl's heels allowing her to fall great hieghts without shattering her femur. It's just retarded sex appeal to a character that had enough already.

Conversely, I look at a girl wearing high heels like they're retarded.

What is wrong with a good pair of sneakers? Oh but I'm just a simple man, I suppose.

All this dress up rage. Are we forgetting Raiden from MGS4?

My analysis. She couldn't cop a new pair of Jordans' online, got fed up and tried to build a rivaling product herself. But hey, when is the last time we've had a hero protagonist in some GOD HONEST street sneaks anyways? Toe Jam and Earl? They got good treads people! Shake off that 90's cartoon shame devs and let these characters exercise their inner 'hip hop'.
