just because shes a famous bounty hunter doesnt mean she isnt lady and therefore is legally required to always look pretty for a man, such is the desire of the patriarchy

/sarcasm

dunno never really followed metroid in any way, maybe they wanted her to look more feminine? tough i guess that goes agaisnt her character, either way those things look silly

[i/] all the other kids with their pumped up kicks...pumped up kicks...better run better run..out run my gun..[/i]

huh? what were we talking about?

yeah...if there's one things that irks me even more than bikini armour its blatant heels where they don't belong...its actually my biggest pet peeve..given the fact I reeeeeaaally don't like the Zero suit...well yeah I'm sure you could imagine

Unless they're going to have some B.S. reason for them, like Portal Girl's heels allowing her to fall great hieghts without shattering her femur. It's just retarded sex appeal to a character that had enough already.
its funny...I never got a "heel" vibe from chells leg braces probably because they don;t blatantly look like heels (and were never intented too) and they serve a very clear purpose...I mean they look like theyre friggen attatched to her bones...(except aparently they are detatchable boots)

The heels are ugly as hell, an example of terrible design and absolutely impractical in and out of her armor. How do they even fit in her boots?

I can't help but think that Nintendo is just pandering to male audiences now with Samus and wouldn't be surprised if in a few years they changed her design to expose her midriff, gave her a skirt and added a plunging neckline Chozo armor be damned.

I miss the old days when playing Metroid meant I was using a character with bad ass weapons and armor and it was basically a mystery and unimportant who was in the suit. Now we have "the baby, the baby" and out of place high heels. smh

I'm not going to lose sleep over it though. They just about lost me after Other M.

Edit: After a closer look, the heels look like they clasp on to her suit. I still think they're a bad idea though.

Could someone explain how that giant spike of a heel fits into this footing?
While we're on the subject, could someone explain how her morphball works? I feel like *that* question still hasn't been answered. Its explanation could also be the reason for that heel issue. Maybe her suit takes use of more than 3 dimensions and stores things in those dimensions. It would explain why she's able to hold hundreds of missiles and bombs there.
it has been answered

I love that in the concept art, it says: "I'm really gone to enjoy drawing this", while the arrow is pointed at her ass.

It's little more than another transparent sexualization of her. My friend has this poster on his wall with Samus doing that supermodel pose where her ass is at the centre of the picture but she's twisting her spine in a near impossible manner so we can get sideboob. Nothing new, though it doesn't make it any less annoying.

Yes it's a good question where she keeps those things, unless they're subscribing to Other M logic where the suit and such materializes from no where which is the only case of it happening.
Huh? Her power suit's always materialised and de-materialised from nowhere, just check any of the Prime 100% endings - even the original appearance in Zero Mission [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXfEX2Gsurg&t=7m38s] implies that.

Anyway, I don't mind the boots, but it is weird that they haven't been in a Metroid game. It's fair enough, though - Zero Suit hasn't been given much exposure at all, her only appearances being in bonus missions, easter eggs and when you die, so I won't hold it against them for using some artistic licence if it makes the character more interesting to play.
The suit also dematerializes in the ending of Super Metroid. I can't remember if it does at the end of the first Metroid.

I really don't care about the rocket heels thing. Frankly, that ship sailed when the zero suit was first introduced. They might as well have fun with it at this point. I think they look cool and it is an interesting way to power up the character.

Well, in Nintendo's defense, she's always kind of been this way.

I am the one percent...meaning I hate the way high heels look in any context despite the fact that I am male. As for Zero Suit Samus, the concept of what the heels do and how they work seem to be solid. I don't see why they have to be heels though...they could have been any other kind of shoe, boot or, future-sock...the color scheme seems odd as well, grey and yellow...the rest of her suit is blue with a pinkish design on the back. The heels could at least compliment that color scheme...if the costumes can be customized than maybe this can be remedied after however many matches or, hours playing or, trophies unlocked.

Hey guys, it's Snot with a topic of his own for once!

I noticed no one was really chatting about Samus and her new kicks in Smash Brothers, call me a massive sci-fi nerd but I'm looking at them and scratching my head wondering "Why?" amongst other things. Here's an image:

My thoughts on them are:
Heels are stupid for combat regardless of in built rockets.
They're not fitting with the lore, the character.
They look like repurposed nerf guns. :|
There's better ideas.
It goes against the original design of Samus's Zero Suit.

I figure if anything, she'd salvage her boots from her power armor like so:

Added kicking power, already with some beefy upgrades.
All this dress up rage. Are we forgetting Raiden from MGS4?

My analysis. She couldn't cop a new pair of Jordans' online, got fed up and tried to build a rivaling product herself. But hey, when is the last time we've had a hero protagonist in some GOD HONEST street sneaks anyways? Toe Jam and Earl? They got good treads people! Shake off that 90's cartoon shame devs and let these characters exercise their inner 'hip hop'.
...Sorry can we back up so I can just say fuck yes Toe Jam and Earl? FUCK YES TOE JAM AND EARL!

The armor dematerializes at the end of the first Metroid as well. Depending on your rate of completion (or if you use the "Justin Bailey" password) you can play through again sans armor.

Come to think of it after refreshing my memory with some pics, it looks like Samus is far more dressed now then she was back at the end of the first few games (bikini armor), or even when compared to some of the concept art I've seen for Metroid fusion.

I think my problem is with the growing tendency to portray what should be a stoic Samus outside of her armor and adding heels to the whole thing makes it even worse.

The zero suit never bothered me. Some sort of under armor would be needed for her suit and it looks like it would work better than the two pieces she has been depicted in in the past. The poses that they put her in are randomly sexulized at times though.

As for the heels, always a bad idea for a chracter of her type. They are also ugly as sin.

Well, two things about Raiden.

One, the high-heels were an intentional joke. Because it's high-heels on a guy who's supposed to be a bad-ass killer.

Second, the high-heels served a purpose of clamping down so he could hold his sword with his feet.

What does Samus' high heels do that requires the spike, and couldn't be simulated with regular jet boots?

Definitely not a fan of the heels either. I guess if I had to come up with an "in game" explanation, since Samus isn't using her power suit, she is using the clip on boots to help compliment her natural abilities. Of course, she probably would not need the jet boots since she underwent serious training and genetic altercations to be so strong. So yeah, even with a reasonable explanation the high heel boots still look so lame. :/

I will say I haven't had too much of a problem with the zero suit, it makes sense an under suit would would look like that. It's pretty much sci-fi standard to have tight body suits under battle armor. Among plenty of other examples, Halo Spartans for example have the same deal.

I admit putting her out in the zero suit whole brings some annoying pandering, but it could be a lot worse.

The heels?
Who even cares at this point, the entire suit is completely stupid and unneeded and I have no idea why metroid fans tolerate this kind of crap.
Master chief never had to run around in a skin tight latex suit for "plot reasons" so what the hell nintendo.
Stop that sexist bullshit.

The whole point of that suit was to make her completely powerless, there is no logical reason for that to be a skin or separate character other than pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Actually you just see the green armor plating mostly. At the end of halo 4 when the spartans are jogging on treadmills etc. the real suit is actually skin tight.

How else would it protect all regions from incoming fire.

Not to mention the nanosuit in Crysis has that 'protective cup' that football players use. Lol.

Well yeah, that's my point. They're not fighting in their underpants because that would be anything but optimal.
This however? This is a skin in a fighting game or a "different character" altogether which makes no sense if you look at it from any other angle than fanservice.

They kind of resemble some combination of

Regardless, not really sure I like the design.

I miss "classic", big-n-bulky suit Samus. :/
