Without ANY spoilers? Tricky.

Sandman is essentially the story of Dream, the personification of dreams, who has to repair his house, and fix some mistakes.

It's much, much more involved than that, but as I said, without spoilers it's hard to explain better. Basically, it's better to just read it. I recommend it, for what that's worth...

The first half is mostly stand alone stories of about 2-3 comics each, and a few 1-shots.
There is an overarching storyline of sorts but that doesn't really become apparent until the last 3rd of the series (I think).

And I agree with Antitonic, recommendation +1

Just start reading it! If you don't want to spend however much money on the first Absolute Sandman (which is a meaty collection of the first 20 volumes of the Sandman comics and costs roughly £50 or $80 or something I think), you might even be able to find some volumes in your local library. (I did, before I got Absolute Sandman as a present.)

It's beautiful and dark. And just... awesome. Just get your hands on some and read. Like Eleuthera said, the stories don't necessarily need background to be enjoyed, so it doesn't hugely matter if you can't get your hands on the first volume first.

Oooh, just start reading. I got so hooked, it's still one of my favourite comics to date. Antitonic pretty much summed it up. The artwork's amazing too.

No clue, but if you're looking into Neil Gaiman, real/listen to (I've only listened to the book on tape, read incredibly by the great Lenny Henry,) Anansi Boys (weird title, but superb and tremendously funny story,) or Good Omens (One of the top two funnisest books I've ever read, and by I, I mean myself, several of my freainds, and my parents. Which is a strange definition of 'I,' but there you go), co-written by the also-great Terry Pratchet. Though I have heard great things about the Sandman series too.

It's about Dream, a sort of god of dreaming/human form of the concept of dreams. It's been a long time since I read the first collection - I think it's about him being freed from years of imprisonment and having to reclaim his powers and realm. It's really good, as is pretty much anything Neil Gaiman has written.

here is a link for buying the first vol of sandman, if your not from europe or the middle east, you might want to find a closer store. But in any case this is the name of what i would suggest on buying. that is how i started reading Sandman. my wife completed my collection last year for my birthday and it was awsome. Highly recommended
