I would think that unless an author is REALLY GOOD, you don't invent an MMO whole from cloth without a little research. Kinda' surprising.
It's the reason the setting seems so generic, and why in the opening the characters call it a ballsy move for them to make a fantasy MMO without magic when the real statement should be it's moronic since from a gameplay perspective it makes the game unplayable to some and impossibly broken for others.

I mean hell in an MMO the top player is a solo-player. A SOLO PLAYER!

Well to be fair, MMO's don't REQUIRE one to not be a solo player. So far, all my runs through WoW have been solo runs. Granted I'm not well known or anything, but I don't see anything wrong with the concept.
What I do find something wrong with the concept is being a solo player in a game of literal life and death.

Oldboy. It's a manga, close enough.
Didn't know that. I loved the movie when I first saw. I said it was the finest example of acting I'd ever seen.

But when has shit like this made money?

Yeah, but that's a shitty adaptation of a mediocre nostalgia property with widespread global popularity. This is going to be a shitty adaptation of a shitty show made three years ago popular with 13-year old edge lord weebs and in Japan. This will not work out.

It will, however, slow down your level progression, meaning there is no reason why his level sould be higher then everyone else's.

That's because Our Hero is a moron. Like, a legitimate moron.

Ever seen Prison School? There was a live-action adaptation of it, thankfully done in Japan, and it was PRICELESS. Perhaps if you KISS an ASIAN you might find it.

Nope.

Just nope.

I am very firmly in the camp of SAO being an 'alright' series, its not amazing but its nowhere near as bad as people try to make out. Frankly the backlash to it is a gigantic overreaction in every way. There are plenty of series with way worse problems than SAO that don't get the same level of criticism.

However it is extremely unsuitable for adaptation for live action. They absolutely should not do this. Its a TERRIBLE idea.

Considering the heavily divided reception this series got, once the movie comes out I'm expecting this to lead to a number of heated arguments online over which of the two versions is better (or worse).

Speed Racer's good. It's not great, and the kid and monkey needs to drown in oil, but it's good.

The kid and the monkey always need to drown in oil on fire.

Yeah, but they don't make up a major part of the film and the film is very solid otherwise so I'd punt it towards the "good" live-action anime films. Also, it's the closest we're going to get to a live-action F-Zero movie so it automatically get a plus for that.

Take your victories where you can find 'em, right? Well, I like to think of Death Race as Twisted Metal, myself. Seems fair.

...Well that's pure idiocy. Opinions on the quality of the series notwithstanding, it's a story largely told in a simulated setting...granted, the same could be said of the Matrix, but at least the Matrix was simulating a mostly realistic urban setting instead of a swords and sorcery one with digital UI prompts. SAO simply isn't designed to be a live action series.

So... Could this all play out like a more ficticious Portal TV series? Probably not, but I can imagine it could [have], anyway...

Other than that, unless the showrunner of the live-action series admit [truthfully] that they know about MMOs, this series will be more divisive than the bets placed on which [American] network wanted to showcase this particular series...

And the Matrix had 63 million dollars. I doubt this show will.

Heeeheeeheeheehee, I cannot WAIT to see the salt roll in on this one. I happen to like SAO despite its flaws. There are a LOT, but it's entertaining enough and I like the universe enough to enjoy watching it. So I always get gitty when I see people try and bash to it oblivion a hundred times after the initial bashings, and this is gonna make it all the more delicious~

It's not like I think live action adaptions of anime are inherently impossible, it's just... why do they always pick the ones that fit the live-action medium the least?

SAO, DBZ, Speed Racer to a lesser extent, although at least in that case they had the budget to attempt the visual style... If the only way you can make the project look anything but cheesy is with a level of CG you clearly can't afford, you're not setting yourself up for success...

It just baffles me, i guess... With so many anime and manga out there that are rooted enough in reality that they could feasibly make the jump to live action, why keep picking the ones that aren't...

The root to success for anime adaptions isn't in series like DBZ. It's in series like "Monster", I think.

That said, depending on how far they decide to push the cyberpunk aspects of the MMO setting, this one could be okay... Not like I have a tremendous amount of love for the source material, so I hardly feel like they can do worse.
