Which bosses in your gaming career were just hard enough to really push your gaming skills to the test, without being too overly difficult? In other words, which boss was the perfect challenge for you?

I will always remember fighting the possessed Riku in the first Kingdom Hearts game, at Hollow Bastion. Such a wonderful fight. Also, Dark Link from Ocarina of Time.

Well... I was ninja'd by the OP by saying Riku >>

But... Demon's Souls has some pretty awesome boss fights. It's just that a lot of them cheat >>

Yes, I'm looking at you, King Allant, you fucker

Ugh-Zan III from Serious Sam: TFE

Best played on Serious with a friend. Awesomely difficult, and fun. If you played through the rest of the game on Serious difficulty, you can do this.

Dark Falz from Phantasy Star Online comes to mind. During the fight I was kind of underleveled, but it tough in a way that I was both intimidated and feeling excited.

I felt the final boss for Suikoden 2 was fairly challenging. I had the strategy guide handy but even then I barely survived. It was an epic finish, with only Shiro remaining, and so injured he would have died from poison the next round, striking the killing blow. http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100219232706/suikoden/images/e/e4/Shiro.gif

I have to admit, even though on the "Most Unfair Boss Fights" thread, I like facing the Patriarch in Killing Floor.

He's massively overpowered, but he's the only specimen you fight that round (granted he doesn't spawn more), and it's very enjoyable having five other friends huddled around you in a pipe bomb minefield, 'nade launcher in hand, pissing yourself waiting for the sound of minigun fire.

Fooking Kakuzu from Naruto Shippuuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2.

After smashing him down and entering a quick time event, he goes monster form and holy crap... you need to avoid a flamethrower, huge shockwaves and tornadoes and then drag him out and beat him up, in wich he turns stronger and then both him and his extra body attacks you so you can't find any space on the screen to dodge. I died sooooooo many times, I eventualy had the pattern down by heart, and god was it great slamming a huge Rasengan into his face killing him.

Definitely Lucien from Fable 2....... ha HA!
To be serious, I'd say Liquid in MGS4, since it played Snake Eater, and play Snake Eater, and I'd watch grass grow with excitement.
Another would have to be the the Collectors in general, and Saren. God, I can't wait to stick it to those reapers.
(I like the hardest difficulties in Mass Effect, to be fair)

Almost every boss from Demon's Souls. They were all challenging, rewarded being creative, were able to be defeated in any number of ways provided you had the skill to figure them out, and somehow the developers still had enough time and resources left over to put some really creative twists to some of them.

Except for Maneater... those guys can go to hell...

I thought the final boss fight in Mass Effect was a fair challenge the first time through. I was playing on Veteran, hadn't reached level 40, I think... I was playing as an infiltrator, so it was just tech abilities and my pistol alongside Wrex and Liara.

Hey i liked Lucien, it was just so funny to see him just die so easily :D

And yes MGS4 had my favourite end boss ever, it was just so cinematic and heartfelt :')

Ah that reminds me of the KH2 Sephiroth battle. While still bitchingly hard, it is possible to do in one go, and getting the (arguably) best Keyblade in the game as a reward is quite the icing on the cake.

Kefka in Final Fantasy 6. Him and his tower of monsters were just tough enough to be challenging without making me want to throw my gameboy out of a window and hang myself.

I'd nominate most of Persona 4's bosses becasue they were difficult but with a decent bit of strategy they could be easily beaten.

Also Genin, the Black Spider Clan Leader, in Ninja Gaiden 2 was fun as hell becasue they were fast paced and intense but never really cheap.

I would have to say Ultimecia from Final Fantasy VIII when you don't use the game cards for tricks and such. She was hard as hell but beatable and that was a good feeling when I won her
