I have one problem with all of gamings latest plot lines... okay more than one but thats a story for a another day. You see, all the new games have a plot line where humanities fate rests in the balance, it's always about saving us dumb bi-pedals. Why can't it be about saving myself, or a basket full of puppies for once? It's just un-creative.

I'd like to see an Ender's Game type of plot line, anyone who hasn't read that book needs to.

You're told that you're humanity's last hope against an invading alien menace, when you're actually carrying out a genocide on behalf of your xenophobic commanders.

How about of basket full of sex, cotton candy, happiness, and hallucenegetics.

OT: Probably becuase it's such an easy plot line to set up: thar ar some alleens, go git 'em.

Indeed, saving all humanity has gotten a bit tedious. At least Bioware has shaken it up lately with the player character in Dragon Age: Origins just being the first line of defence, but not the only hope of humanity, and the player character in Mass Effect not just saving humanity, but all sentient life.

Of course you are generalizing a bit too much...
How far back can we go and still call things new? I haven't played these games, but I'm fairly sure that in both Uncharted 2 and The Saboteur, you don't have to save humanity. Saving humanity isn't the goal in Farcry 2 either. It is also a safe bet that it isn't the goal in the latest Tony Hawk skating game.

Indeed, it's a generalization, i mean, look at the fallout games, the first two were about saveing the vault or tribe.

the third one was more about finding your dad.

I believe you're thinking of hallucinogens.

OT: Because a basket of puppies would be boring as hell.

Mmm...an Ender's Game...erm...game would be fantastic.
The core issue there is that it would be an intelligent game. Given the latest stream of popular stuff, it doesn't...oh, what's the phrase I'm looking for here...it doesn't shoot enough testosterone out of enough pores to really merit making.

Yes but who made the the super top secret starfighter that you will use to destroy the aliens? That basket certainly didn't and I doubt a world power is going to just give you one to save that basket.

Because buyers are pretty dumb.

But i agree, it's un-creative. I mean, there's so many plots one could create. An interstellar peacekeeping detail where humans work toghether with aliens, or humans as "space Nazi"-type bad guys (maybe with you playing as one of them).

Or maybe one could just drop whole "impossible odds" business and make a story about quest for the riches instead. Like what Tomb Raider and Uncharted are doing.

If you want to play a game where you are an unmonumental, unimportant part of the game world you can play Sims. Personally, I like feeling like a lot is resting on my shoulders when I play a game. I guess they could come up with more except 'save humanity' but it is easy to stick with and it works.

Is a basket full of puppies and sex not the same thing? o_O Remind me to weave a different moral fabric someday. x
