- A gunslinger (any kind of range weapon)

Samus Aran. Guns (powerful ones), and all sorts of other nifty gadgets. I'm sure a "power suit" character will be necessary at some point for underwater/space traversal as well.

- A close combat specialist (tank, knight, ninja, whatever)

Sora from Kingdom Hearts. In addition to magic powers and taking MAJOR punishment, the dude is a self-taught swordsman who does the CUR-AE-ZI-est shit you've ever seen with a sword. Also he can cleave buildings in half.

- A close support member (medic, mage, sniper)

Thrall from warcraft. Brave, level headed, powerful, heroic, total bad ass. Besides, everyone knows shamans have the best buffs.

- A diplomat (social skills ftw)

Well, I'd think Shepard(see below) and Thrall could cover this, It wouldn't hurt to have a dedicated diplomat.

Pheonix Wright. Knowledge of criminal law, and and a courtroom savant. He also has the oddest tendency to find JUST the information he needs for any problem, plus the magatama would definitely come in great handy.

- A team leader

Commander Shepard, because she's goddamn Commander Shepard. To be more specific, redheaded femshep, short hair, vanguard, mostly paragon (but NOT 100%). Carries the wraith shotgun and no other gun. We'll have sora carry spare heat clips in his hammer-space inventory.

- Several generic grunts to assist (Stormtroopers, Red Shirts, Goblins, whatever)

Pokemon. Very versatile, and quite powerful. At least one of them will be a zubat(or Crobat), to endlessly distract my enemies, artificially lengthening any area they are trying to traverse.

Video games only? Awwwww :p

Gunslinger - Red Harlow (Red Dead Revolver). Because seeing all you guys saying John Marston makes me feel like a hipster. THIS DUDE HAD DEAD-EYE FIRST.

Close combat - Richter Belmont (Castlevania). The strongest Belmont.

Support - Light Medic (Brink). He can run around quickly, revive people, heal people, and buf people.

Diplomat - Adam Jensen (Deus Ex: Human Revolution). For one, speech enhancing augmentations. He's proved himself capable of talking people into many things. I don't say JC because...well...he doesn't seem to know as much as Jensen in terms of social skills.

Team Leader - Big Boss (MGS). The dude's a legend, not to mention he had a knack for getting people on his side.

Generic Grunts - Prinnies (Disgaea). I hate to repeat others, but these doods are just perfect. Comic relief, effective, explosive.

- Gordon Freeman (Half-Life). Simply because I think it would be hilarious.
''What now, captain?''
''...''
''C... captain?''

''I... erm...''
Gordon Freeman makes an EXCELLENT team leader! He can tell people to do stuff just by LOOKING AROUND! Not to mention everyone has the irrational urge to follow him around and fight in his name. :p

Gunslinger: Doom Guy (Doom). He can run at about twenty miles per hour without getting tired, and still shoot accurately as he goes.
Melee: Altaïr (Assassin's Creed). Once he learns the counter attack, he's pretty much untouchable.
Support: Bastilla (Knights of the Old Republic). Her superpower is making her team win.
Diplomat: King Graham (King's Quest). He can get anything from anybody (though he might die a few times along the way.)
Team Leader: Mario (Mario). He has more experience than all of them combined.
Grunts: Poke'mon. They are tough as steel, they are obedient and they have all sorts of useful abilities.

Gunslinger: Max Payne, from Max Panye (duh). The guy had 669 kills during the first game, I guess he could handle himself.

Melee: Konoko, from Oni. Handle her self really good in unarmed situations, so who knows what she could do with a sword.

Support: Assault guy, from battlefield 3. He can handle himself in battle, has an unlimited medical supply and can revive people that has been shot with only a defibrillator.

Diplomat: Ruck, from Basion. Seriously, with that voice he could sooth any situation

Team Leader: Niko Bellic, from GTA IV. Yes, he is actually a pretty calm fellow, but can take actions when he needs to. He is smart too.

Grunts: Swedish soldiers, from the mod Battlefield: Silent Heroes. Basically cause they are swedish soldiers and I know what they are capable of, and can handle them self in tough terrain.

- A gunslinger - Solid Snake - He's Solid Snake for crying out loud!
- A close combat specialist - Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad - Getting up close and stabbing people is his speciality
- A close support member - The End - The Father Of Sniping
- A diplomat - Adam Jensen - who'd make a better diplomat then someone who has the ability to influence people using his "social enhancements". And if they still disagree, he can just stab them will the arm blades.
- A team leader - Commander Shepard - I'll copy the Admiral Hackett quote to explain why Shepard's in charge. "You can pay a soldier to fire a gun. You can pay him to charge the enemy and take a hill. But you can't pay him to believe."
- Several generic grunts to assist - Militaires Sans Frontières - because if I need grunts to assist, I want the best goddamn grunts, trained by Big Boss

I suppose it's a little MGS-biased (although I could've made it more so, by changing the Leader to Big Boss and Close Combat Specialist to The Boss) but that's what I've been playing a lot of recently

Gunslinger: Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect). Skilled, works well in a team, and can serve as second-in-command, given his experience commanding his own squad between ME1 and ME2 (and his willingness to make difficult decisions). Also heavily implied to possess considerable tactical ability, making him an excellent advisor to the leader.

CQB Specialist: Adam Jensen (Deus Ex: Human Revolution). Specifically, a stealth build focusing on takedowns, the pistol and the taser. In addition to his usefulness in open combat, his non-lethal capabilities would be good for defusing hostage situations.

Support: Chell (Portal). Her portal gun would grant the entire team incredible mobility and open up very unique combat options, such as firing through well-placed portals, or accelerating everyday objects to lethal velocities and launching them into foes.

Diplomat: Courier (Fallout: New Vegas). Specifically, a speech and guns/energy weapons build. A capable warrior who can quite easily convince the leader of an opposing army to surrender without firing a shot. Would ideally bring suit and fedora, significantly increasing overall classiness of team.

Leader: Commander Shepard (Mass Effect). Possesses unparalleled charisma, natural leadership ability, and an affinity for saving the day, no matter the cost. Exactly the kind of man/woman you'd want saving the world. Additionally, Shepard is highly persuasive, killing Shepard only makes him/her angry, and Shepard is possibly the best haggler the galaxy has ever known.

Cannon Fodder: Metroids (where the fuck do you think). Metroids are fast and durable, and despite being extremely vulnerable to cold, they're deadly enough to pose a significant threat, even to the ice beam-equipped Samus Aran. The Metroids would have to be domesticated, of course; fortunately, Metroid II demonstrates that this is possible.

I considered these, but ended up rejecting them for various reasons:

Samus Aran (Metroid). Combines mobility with ridiculous firepower and incredibly durable armor. REJECTED: Evidence suggests she doesn't respond well to orders and has an extreme lone wolf mentality. Also suffers from trust issues and severe PTSD.

The Illusive Man (Mass Effect). Incredibly intelligent, absurdly persuasive, mind-boggingly well-connected and -funded. Silky-smooth voice. REJECTED:
Ambition leads to taking foolhardy risks; most notably, in his thirst for power, he allowed himself to be indoctrinated by the Reapers.
