Finished a run through of Mass Effect 2 the other day and after talking to a friend realized I saved less than half the times he did and it got me wondering,

How often does everyone save when playing a game? Do you wing it and assume you have it under control, or do you save every time something might possibly happen?

In terms of Bioware games I just save fairly often out of habit, but more frequently depending on how difficult that part of the game is.

On the xbox I don't save that often (every 10 mins or so), but on a PC game when I have quicksave I'm lucky if I walk more than 10 steps without saving.

I save frequently when everything is going right..
But when something goes wrong my previous save seems to be hours ago..

i've gotten into a habit of saving frequently... although, that's mainly because i'm playing my n64 at the moment and that has a habit of freezing...

Most games I play have autosave, so I don't really bother with it myself unless it's like, "Would you like to save now?" "Yeah, game. Why not?"
If it's a difficult game, I save every chance I get so I can load the last thing I didn't royally screw up...which happens a lot in Silent Hill: Homecoming.

i usually don't bother with saving unless I have to go somewhere, or when i think theres a boss fight.

Autosave, when i want a certain part of the game is the only time when i manually save it.
(like the last mission of mass effect 2, i can do that over and over again and it keeps its tension. )

I personally save all the time, for two reasons:

1)In case there's a really cool moment soon that I might want to play again (which is why I use multiple saves)
2)And just because I'm extremely paranoid, even in games with autosave.

Every hour, on the hour.

It depends on the game really.

JRPG - whenever I see a save point.
Zelda - before I enter the boss room/enter a temple.
war games - after finishing a chapter.
other games have different save patterns.

but for the most part games now have autosave, so I just let those save for me.

If it's a big RPG when ever it's a good idea.

If it's say.... Batman or Halo or Call of duty , it doesn't matter.

A friend of mine has a habit of creating about 5 save files for one playthough/character "just in case". He then proceeds to save every few minutes.
Imagine watching this game. When I did, i realised he saves more than he plays.

When i played portal i quicksaved whenever i got the little reminder, on other games i tend to save every half hour, ever since i played a game for about 7/8 hours straight, forgot to save and switched off my playstation...i couldnt even look at the game for ages after that

It depends. If I am playing an RPG, I want everything to be perfect so I save quite frequently. If I am playing any other form of game I never save. In single player endeavors, I am skilled enough to very rarely die. In fact, if I am not playing on the hardest setting of the game I usually have to make an attempt to die.

I'm unskilled at multiplayer, though.
