I dont actually save that much, mainly due to the amazing invention of autosave, and the fact that i generally like the game enough to play the bit over once more if i skrew it up. The second time round i generally save just in case

On Mass Effect 1 for PC, I Quick Saved pretty frequently. Other than that, I usually save whenever I feel as if I haven't saved in a while.

On my PC, autosave is my friend, plus I create a new save file (Overwriting old saves? As if.) every time I stop playing for the day or sometimes at major points in the game, depending on the game, plus I wail on the quicksave button like nobody's business.

In console games, on the other hand, I just go along with whenever it saves for me or I happen to run into a save point. Unless I'm playing them in an emulator, in which case it's back to constant whacking of the quicksave button (i.e. "freeze state").

I remember when my friend took the Oblivion warning too seriously.

Save Often: The realm of Oblivion is a dangerous place.

By the time he was in the shrine he had saved over three hundred times.

Depends how easy it is to save. BioWare games make me save a lot, F5 being default, so it happens a lot, others make it harder or its more time consuming so I cbf

I have to worry about Vista crashing the game so I save quite often. ther's nothing more annoying than doing a bunch of menial tasks twice.

Finished a run through of Mass Effect 2 the other day and after talking to a friend realized I saved less than half the times he did and it got me wondering,

How often does everyone save when playing a game? Do you wing it and assume you have it under control, or do you save every time something might possibly happen?
Dragon Age, I save about nearly 5 minutes. That game is insanely hard when playing as a rogue (personally I think the class is just broken). For rpgs like final fantasy, or a game like bioshock I save roughly every half hour or so.

Everytime there's a checkpoint. Or in the case of quick save, immediately before and after a really difficult section.

In Mass Effect 2 you don't really need to save at all, auto save jumps in at a moment's notice. I finished my first play through of it with just 3 saves and I think I'm on 2 so far for my second play through.
Normally I only save before finishing a session, I trust auto save and checkpoints in most games. I know one of my first abused quick save in his PC playing days, sometimes making saves less than a minute apart.

Console games I rarely save.. prolly about once every 3 hours depending on the type. And then if something goes wrong I rage quit and wonder why I didn't save more often.

But on PC games I found that f5 is my new best friend, especially in Oblivion.

Whenever I find ammo or a new weapon. That way I load back to a point where I have lots of resources.

I think I saved around 10 times in 2009, Team fortress 2 and Counter-strike source do not need saving, and the games which do have saves, I never turned off my PC or the Xbox to save.

Depends on whether there's a quick-save hotkey. I find that in Dragon Age, I quick-save after/before every battle. I quick-save a lot in nearly all BioWare games. Especially Baldur's Gate II. That game was brutal, yet highly enjoyable. Dragon's Age is actually less of a challenge than Baldur's Gate was, yet I am still challenged at times, especially in the early game, before my min-maxing could really take effect. (Especially when bad guys from like 3 rooms all group up on you. Dealing with that without AoE spells was pretty hard.) Then I just get in the habit of quick-saving, and continue for the rest of the game. Since quicksave overwrites your older saves, it's economical for your hard drive too.

I generally start once I find that autosave happened way back at the beginning of the cavern, and I need to go through 4 more fights to get where I was.

In RTS/FPS games? never.

Most games I play have autosave, so I don't really bother with it myself unless it's like, "Would you like to save now?" "Yeah, game. Why not?"
If it's a difficult game, I save every chance I get so I can load the last thing I didn't royally screw up...which happens a lot in Silent Hill: Homecoming.
Pretty much this.

It does depend on the game, stuff like dragon age i save after every other fights pretty much, but stuff like the old style JRPG games i save whenever i see a save crystal/point/orb/whatever

PC game = quicksave all the time

Just depends....
